Film Review: Greta Gerwig’s Empowering Barbie Sparkles with Just as Much Heart as There is Pink!

At first, I wasn’t even sure about writing my take on Greta Gerwig’s highly-anticipated pink-gasmic Barbie, starring two-time Academy Award nominee Margot Robbie as the titular doll, but the more I think about it, the more I find personal reactions, revelations, and ruminations—so I might as well just write the darn review!

I. Love. It.

I was entertained, wowed, and moved. I’ve decided that, at this point in my life, I want to invest my time in entertainment that will uplift me, so before I go into further detail, I highly recommend Barbie to anyone whose interest is peaked by the trailers, interviews, and headlines surrounding the doll who can be anything and is everything.

Let’s break this down!

A warning: Audiences must go into this film prepared for political commentary, not only regarding society’s view of Mattel’s legendary doll setting unrealistic beauty standards, but of the ever-present distortion of power among the genders—this is not meant to be a spoiler, but if you are unfamiliar with the relevant themes of Gerwig’s previously acclaimed works (Little Women, Lady Bird), then you’re in for what could be a rude awakening. Rather than shoving one gender-norm-trope after another in each scene, Gerwig aims to volley the magic of Barbie with some intelligent reminders that within one’s boundless imagination, we can find the courage to address what ails us in the “real world” and pushes us into such escapism. This applies to more than young girls questioning their power, but also to anyone who has been silenced by a greater force.

Anyway… In this film, Robbie’s Barbie, who begins as charming and perfectly as we expect from a stereotypical Barbie, is headed for a crash course in patriarchy with a splash of existentialism. Overall, Robbie’s performance is impeccable with a welcome dose of innocence that inspires audiences to view the opening Barbieland act through the lens of the doll’s youthful demographic. It’s all eye candy and the good feels. Obviously, play is meant to be fun and doesn’t always make sense—it shouldn’t; however, it allows us to reflect on our own desires and identities, which incites Barbie’s adventure ahead.

Dually, Ryan Gosling’s much-hyped portrayal of Ken delivers an uncanny and unexpected combination of physical comedy and hilarious passion with precision, stealing nearly every scene he’s in. Lest we forget Gosling’s comic prowess in films like Crazy, Stupid, Love and the oft forgotten The Nice Guys, among his filmography of brooding leading men or action heroes. Additionally, Gosling takes center stage in his rendition of “Just Ken,” a power ballad that encompasses the ignored complexities of being a purposeless trophy.

However, my favorite performance of the whole film is from America Ferrera as Gloria, the real-life corporate assistant and struggling mother, who is severely underused and deserves a much heavier presence in the film. While Ferrera offers humor in well-timed moments, especially when encountering a fish-out-of-water Barbie in Los Angeles, it’s the Emmy-winner’s evocative monologues that inspire and empower. As the most significant human character, I wanted to know more about her and champion her journey, along with Barbie’s own plight, when confronted by her disillusioned daughter Sasha, played by Ariana Greenblatt. Not to mention, it’s been too long since Ferrera has set the silver screen aglow, and it just feels right!

Furthermore, the supporting cast is a collection of refreshing faces that support the diversity that Barbie represents today and adds to the mischief and fun that ensues in both Barbieland and the real world, including Insecure star Issa Rae as a sassy President Barbie; Death on the Nile actress Emma Mackey as a Physicist Barbie; Saturday Night Live alum Kate McKinnon, perfectly cast as the “weird Barbie” we all had; X-Men: Dark Phoenix’s Alexandra Shipp as Writer Barbie; transgender actress from Transparent Hari Nef as Doctor Barbie; Scottish actress Sharon Rooney; Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings star and iCelebrity Jeopardy champion Simu Liu; One Night in Miami…’s Kingsley Ben-Adir; Sex Education actor Ncuti Gatwa; Life and Beth actor Michael Cera as the discontinued Allan; Oscar-winning writer of Promising Young Woman, Emerald Fennell, as the controversial pregnant Midge doll; Grammy-winner Dua Lipa and wrestler-turned-actor John Cena as mermaid Barbie and Ken; and Bridgerton’s Nicola Coughlan, playing another fabulous Barbie addition! Also, Will Ferrell’s role as an unnamed Mattel CEO fits in with Gerwig’s ridiculous, though entertaining and magical tone.

Speaking of magic, the film’s music, produced by Mark Ronson and Andrew Wyatt, amplifies Gerwig’s vision. With a summer-ready soundtrack featuring Billie Eilish’s Oscar-worthy track “What Was I Made For?”, Lipa’s pop hit “Dance the Night,” Nicki Minaj and Ice Spice’s “Barbie World (with Aqua),” Charli XCX’s “Speed Drive,” and more, we’ll be listening to the “bespoke pop” hits of Barbie’s world well into awards season—if there is one…

Lastly, the strategic and glorious set designs, by six-time Academy Award nominated production designer Susan Greenwood, bring life to the Dream House and other locations, along with the divine costumes by the one and only, two-time Oscar-winner Jacqueline Durran. Most notably, both Greenwood and Durran have collaborated on visually stunning past projects, including Anna Karenina, Sherlock Holmes, Beauty and the Beast, so with Gerwig in tow, it’s no surprise that Barbie is a feast for the eyes, in addition to the imagination.

While the misconceptions about Barbie will not completely be corrected by this movie, the film is, in fact, directed towards anyone who has loved and hated the doll, teaching audiences to be more inclusive and empowering. On a personal note, I felt particularly emotional by the mother-daughter scenes and connection, especially as the mother of a young daughter. This mother—me—is who she is because of the time, energy, and imagination spent with Barbie during childhood, blending storytelling with style and feminism.

Let’s just celebrate Barbie and ourselves because Barbie is a part of all of us, whether we like it or not. It’s just so much easier and heck of a lot more fulfilling to like Barbie than not. Have an open mind. Have some laughs. Let’s uplift each other into the future that Barbie wants us to have!

Watch This Style: Billie Eilish’s “What Was I Made For?” for the New Barbie Movie!

Every day seems to have more & more new Barbie news, which is making for a fabulous & exciting summer for not only the movie industry, but also for music & fashion. In addition to Dua Lipa‘s pop-heavy dance track “Dance the Night,” the Barbie soundtrack includes “Barbie World” by Nicki Minaj & Ice Spice, as well as new songs by Ava Max, Sam Smith, HAIM, Gayle, & more. Most notably, Billie Eilish adds to the film’s music with her new song “What Was I Made For?” a vulnerable & introspective take on Greta Gerwig‘s vision for Barbie, played by Margot Robbie, who enters the “real world.” While the video may be less action-packed than others, the intimate observation of Billie in costume, through her directorial vision, adds to the drama of the song. Additionally, the song resonates with listeners anywhere who have ever questioned their purpose, confidence, & futures.

Plus, the Oscar-winning singer sits down with Apple Music’s Zane Lowe, discussing their reactions to first screening the Barbie movie, the origins of the song, Billie’s personal connection to the song’s themes & Barbie as a child, as well as the process of writing & recording it.

What do you think of the song? Have you been playing the soundtrack on repeat? Are you excited to see the film released on July 21st? Fresh off the glamorous world premiere of Barbie, Ken is finally getting a chance in the limelight!

While the new Greta Gerwig-directed comedy totes Margot Robbie’s Barbie as the iconic powerhouse, it’s Ryan Gosling’s hilarious portrayal as Ken that is display receiving rave reviews, thanks in part of the just-released power ballad “Just Ken.”

While audiences know that Ryan can handle both singing & humor from his acclaimed roles in La La Land & Crazy, Stupid, Love., but the two-time Academy Award nominee takes his Ken-ergy to the next level!

Red Carpet Review: All the Fashion from The Barbie Premieres & Press Tour with Margot Robbie, Ryan Gosling, & More!

The highly anticipated Barbie movie is almost here! The stars, including Margot Robbie, Ryan Gosling, Issa Rae, America Ferrera, Kate McKinnon, Simu Liu, Michael Cera, & Will Ferrell, have been hitting the international press circuit, along with the film’s scribe & director Greta Gerwig, with photo calls, red carpet, talk shows, & more. Most notably, Margot has been living that Barbiecore style in a variety of pink looks inspired by the doll’s actual fashion, as well as more dramatic dresses that hearken back to the doll’s signature style, particularly for last night’s world premiere in Los Angeles.

There’s more to come, too, as the film premieres in the U.S. July 21st! for now, watch some of the pink carpet interviews from the world premiere!

Watch This Style: Dua Lipa’s “Dance the Night” Video for the New Barbie Movie!

The hype for the new Barbie movie continues to grow, as does my obsession with watching & reading every detail the upcoming film depiction of the Mattel doll that changed the world. Starring Margot Robbie & Ryan Gosling, the Greta Gerwig-directed film finds Barbie entering the real world, but not without a majorly glitzy dance sequence.

Barbiecore isn’t just taking over fashion & Hollywood, but Dua Lipa‘s new single “Dance the Night” for the film explodes with pink, fun, & celebration, including some clips of the stars dancing. The pop hit follows suit with her signature uptempo club-heavy sound, much like her Grammy-winning album Future Nostalgia. The singer holds her own in the Barbie universe, as seen in the video, along with some humor added with an appearance of the director.

I have this song on repeat whenever I can. Not only is it the perfect tune for the July 21st release, but it’s also a summer hit in-the-making.

Top 10 Best Dressed Stars of 2022: Florence Pugh, Sadie Sink, Jodie Turner-Smith, & More!

As 2022 comes to an end, let’s take a stylish look back at the most stylish & best dressed stars of the year! This list, in no particular order, showcases entertainers whose red carpet choices have pushed boundaries, made headlines, & furthered their stylish legacy!

First, actress Jodie Turner-Smith turned heads in a variety of bold, powerful, & modern looks, channeling old Hollywood with a futuristic twist. Most notably, the White Noise star dominated the Venice Film Festival red carpet. Additionally, she wore designer names to other star-studded events, such as Gucci, Christopher John Rogers, Christian Siriano, & more!

The 36-year-old British star can be seen next in the Jennifer Aniston-Adam Sandler comedy sequel Murder Mystery 2, which will surely invite more breathtaking style to the red carpet.

Next, Pam & Tommy star Lily James rose to a new level of bombshell that we hadn’t previously seen in such quiet, sweet period depictions the actress presented in Downton Abbey, Cinderella, or The Pursuit of Love; however, portraying Pamela Anderson in the Hulu miniseries showed the British leading lady’s sultry, dramatic, & mature style.

Whether she’s decked out in Valentino, Burberry, Roberto Cavalli, Versace, or Miu Miu, she’s constantly appeared on best dressed lists throughout 2022. Up next, Lily will be promoting the romantic comedy What’s Love Got to Do with It? & starting alongside Willem Defoe & Joe Keery in Finalmente I’alba. Also, Lily is nominated for a Golden Globe, so she’ll continue her style streak into 2023!

Academy Award nominee Florence Pugh is unstoppable on the big screen with such masterful performances in Don’t Worry Darling & The Wonder. Time & again, she’s proven her enduring, youthful, & dazzling sense of style on the red carpet, especially during her nipple-baring appearances. She’s not just another British star topping our list, but a force who kills it in Victoria Beckham, Valentino, Dior, Emilia Wickstead, & more!

There’s so much buzz about Florence, which is no surprise after she ruled the Venice Film Festival, British Independent Film Awards, 13th Governors Awards, & 66th BFI London Film Festival. For 2023, Florence has multiple projects in the works, including A Good Person, directed by former beau Zach Braff, & Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer.

It’s no secret that I adore everything that Cuban actress Ana de Armas wears. The ease with which she graces the red carpet is reminiscent of Grace Kelly…or dare I say, Marilyn Monroe?! The Blonde star is far from resting on the stylish path she’s forged as she’s nominated for a Golden Globe Award, which will surely present the opportunity to sport more Louis Vuitton!

The Oscar hopeful is currently I production opposite her Knives Out co-star Chris Evans in Ghosted & will portray a dancer-turned-assassin with Keanu Reeves in Ballerina.

One of 2022’s major breakout stars is Bridgerton actress Simone Ashley, who seemed to pop up everywhere there was a camera & red carpet, & for good reason too! Also, appearing on Sex Education, Simone pushes the line between elegance & temptress in designs by Giorgio Armani, Jacquemus, Moschino, Gucci, & Burberry, adding some much-needed fierceness & poise at every turn!

Also, Simone will be lending her voice to some upcoming animated productions, including 10 Lives, as well as appearing in the third season of Bridgerton.

Actress-turned director Olivia Wilde may have been splashed across headlines in 2022 for criticism of her relationships, but that did stop her from proving her style prowess every chance she had. While promoting the controversial futuristic thriller Don’t Worry Darling, as well as walking the red carpet of the Women in Film Awards, ELLE Women in Hollywood Celebration, 2nd Annual Academy Museum Gala, San Sebastian International Film Festival, or the Venice Film Festival, Olivia’s boho goddess gowns stunned.

Often going for a deep-v, long sleeves, or crop top, Olivia’s fashion was designed by YSL, Vera Wang, Alexandre Vauthier, Valentino, Gucci, & more! Up next for Olivia, she will direct Perfect about Olympic gold medalist gymnast Kerri Strug & can currently be seen in Babylon with Margot Robbie & Brad Pitt.

Stranger Things star Sadie Sink has not only ruled 2022 because of the hit sci-fi/fantasy Nextflix show as the brooding & tortured Max Mayfield, but the 20-year-old is gaining major attention for her big screen performance in The Whale, opposite Oscar front-runner Brendan Fraser. The Texas native sparkled on the red carpet, for press appearances, & on magazine covers, especially wearing unforgettable looks by Chanel, Alexander McQueen, Stella McCartney, & more!

As we’ve already seen from Sadie’s Stranger Things role & tour-de-force portrayal in Taylor Swift’s “All Too Well: Short Film,” her style is only getting better & she’s one to watch in 2023 with an upcoming role in Berlin Nobody opposite Eric Bana.

Next on our list is comedian, actress, & writer Mindy Kaling who took 2022 by storm via red carpet & her Instagram with confidence & a major style turnaround from what we’ve previously seen. Whether she’s presenting at the Emmy Awards, posing for photogs at the Met Gala, turning heads at museum galas, heading out to a boutique opening, Mindy is all about showing off her style & happiness in an array of classic gowns with bold colors & patterns for outfits that we’d kill for!

Some of the famous names she’s worn this year include Oscar de la Renta, LaQuan Smith, Tory Burch, Magda Butrym, & more! We can’t wait to see what Mindy has in store for us in 2023!

This year’s Oscar-winner for Best Actress was awarded to Jessica Chastain & she’s definitely not slowing down her style, nor should she! The gorgeous redhead continues her glamorous fashion streak in fitted gowns in hues across the rainbow & plunging mini dresses! The actress has previously been nominated 3 other time & she’s no stranger to the red carpet, having donned every style of ball gown for last decade & more! She’s true to who she is, taking risks in neon tones, but also playing with lace, feathering, & ruching, which suits her shape.

This year, Jessica was seen wearing a whole lot of Gucci! Currently, Jessica can be seen portraying country singer Tammy Wynnette in the Showtime miniseries George & Tammy, opposite Michael Shannon. Coming up, Jessica stars in Memory with Peter Sarsgaard & Mother’s Instinct with Anne Hathaway.

Last, but not least is Zoey Deutch, who stole hearts in the Netflix holiday romantic comedy Something from Tiffany’s, wearing looks inspired by the Tiffany & Co. signature blue box! The 28-year-old blonde certainly knows how to steal the scene & rule a red carpet in designers, such as Oscar de la Renta, Giambattista Valli, Valentino, Carolina Herrera, & more!

2022 was really just the beginning for Zoey, a natural Style Darling, but I can’t wait to see what she wears next. Some of her future projects include the comedy Most Dangerous Game with Glen Powell & the drama Hound.

Color Me Style: The Season of Barbiecore Pink is Here!

Barbiecore? That’s a thing? you ask? Well, yes. Hot pink fashion is super hot right now, not only because of recently released photos of Margot Robbie in the upcoming Barbie movie, but because it’s the summer of fun, feminine, flirty, & fierce fashion! Top A-listers are appearing in all-pink for red carpet events, major fashion shows, & all over social media every. single. day. Additionally, pink is popping up on runways & go-to retailers to take a not-pink-enough world by storm!

Some of the best latest & recent past Barbiecore moments making headlines include the ladies at Valentino‘s Haute Couture Fall/Winter 2022-2023 show in Rome, such as Emily in Paris actress Ashley Park, West Side Story & Academy Award-winner breakout star Ariana DeBose, Black Widow badass (nipple & all!) Florence Pugh, & fashion darling Anne Hathaway.

At the recent premiere of Where the Crawdads Sing, The Morning Show stars, Reese Witherspoon (look very Elle Woods-inspired too!) & Karen Pittman, stepped out in pink.

Also, Barbiecore has been present on stage with musician Conan Gray at Coachella, High School Musical actress Vanessa Hudgens at the MTV Movie and TV Awards, & Dua Lipa for her Future Nostalgia tour.

Met Galas of years past also rocked the pink, including film icon Glenn Close; Pam & Tommy lead Sebastian Stan; Victoria Beckham‘s daughter-in-law, Nicola Peltz; & singer-songwriter Kacey Musgraves.

Not to mention that Barbiecore is taking over social media with Instagram posts from reality television stars Kim Kardashian & Khloe Kardashian, along with model Hailey Bieber.

Film festivals have been no exception to Barbiecore, especially on model Caro Daur, singer Ciara, Spanish actress Penelope Cruz, & the unstoppably stylish Zendaya.

Barbie in all textures & cuts continue to gain attention on model Duckie Thot at the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue launch, actress Megan Fox in New York City promoting Machine Gun Kelly’s documentary Life in Pink, & the incomparably gorgeous & talented Lizzo at the premiere for Lizzo’s Watch Out for the Big Grrrls.

Finally, memorable red carpet appearances popping with Barbiecore include model Gigi Hadi at Prince’s Trust Gala, both artist Saweetie & actor Billy Porter at the Grammy Awards, actress / talk show host Drew Barrymore at the Daytime Emmy Awards, & actress Lana Condor at the MTV Movie & TV Awards.

Watch This Style: All the Pink & Neon Looks (So Far) Margot Robbie & Ryan Gosling Wear Filming Greta Gerwig’s Barbie Movie!

It’s everywhere & yet so far away still! Greta Gerwig‘s live-action Barbie film is currently in production & the internet is ablaze with images & commentary on the ultra neon on-screen duo of Barbie & Ken, played respectively by two-time Academy Award-nominees Margot Robbie & Ryan Gosling. One may ask, could the movie get any blonder? However, you’re going to get more than meets the blinded-by-neon eye from this movie, especially with Gerwig at the helm… which is slated for a July 2023 release. I will be glued to the web with updates over the course of the next year, waiting with bated breath for the first major motion picture about the ultimate Style Darling herself: Barbie.

In the mean time, throw on some shades, play that 90s Aqua song, & scroll through the slideshow & gallery below for all that’s been photographed so far of the Hollywood icons portraying iconic characters:

Which look is your favorite from filming so far? Is it the classic denim Ken or Barbie in her convertible? The Western garb? The duo rollerskating in a kaleidoscope of neon? Are you excited to see the film next year? Australian actress & Oscar-nominee Margot Robbie covers the December 2018 / January 2019 issue of Harper’s Bazaar, looking every bit the star she is. Top 10 Celeb Sightings: The Gals from Ghostbusters, Glitter, Glitz, & More!

While I’m working on a new essay based on my recent trip to New York City to the Metropolitan Museum of Art for the Manus x Machina exhibit, my attention has been drawn to the latest & greatest of celebrity red carpet appearances. Just to clarify, I don’t share these celebrity images to praise the thin & privileged, or to negatively reinforce that beauty is supposed to look a certain way (like a white Hollywood actress). I’m inspired by the style in the images below, from sequins to lace to cut-outs to draping to accessories & all that. Not only do I appreciate the craftsmanship of a beautiful garment, but how an outfit is assembled (to me) is like a work of art, setting a tone & inspiring something beautiful with texture & colors.

Oscar-winning actress Alicia Vikander shimmered in a silver Louis Vuitton gown with Bulgari Serpenti jewelry at the Jason Bourne premiere. The Shallows star Blake Lively continued to show off her on fleek maternity style in a salmon lace dress by Jonathan Simkhai (shop similar here) with a Christian Louboutin Paloma bag (shop similar here), Sophia Webster Rosalind crystal sandals (shop here), & jewelry by Anita Ko in New York City. German actress Diane Kruger wowed in a red sheer lace Jason Wu design with a mini nude Chanel clutch (shop similar here) at the premiere of The Infiltrator. Indian beauty Freida Pinto went for a monochromatic all-white look in a beaded embellished top with white leg pants & a menswear inspired jacket by Ralph Lauren Collection & neutral pumps at the Wimbledon Men’s Finals. Julia Stiles showed off her curves in a honeycomb-patterned Rubin Singer halter gown (see runway look here) with jewelry by Amrapali & Jerome C. Rousseau sandals at the European premiere of Jason Bourne.

Alicia Vikander, Blake Lively, Diane Kruger, Freida Pinto, & Julia Stiles.SNL star Kate McKinnon was all smiles in a blue Versace gown with jewelry by David Yurman (shop similar here) at the Ghostbusters premiere, alongside Kristen Wiig who wore in a pink strapless sweetheart tropical palm print Jenny Packham column gown with pink Irene Neuwirth gemstones. Funny lady Leslie Jones stole the red carpet in a red off-the-shoulder sweetheart Christian Siriano gown with studded ankle strap sandals at the Ghostbusters premiere. Aussie actress Margot Robbie stood tall in an embroidered peach Miu Miu column gown with diamonds by Messika at the London premiere of Tarzan. Melissa McCarthy glowed in a yellow lace floral embroidered 50s inspired A-line dress by Judith B. Swartz & Daniela Kurrle with strappy cream Aldo sandals (shop similar here) at the Ghostbusters premiere.

Kate McKinnon, Kristen Wiig, Leslie Jones, Margot Robbie, & Melissa McCarthy.I love how even after so many years of following celebrity fashion & blogging that I’m still surprised & impressed by what’s happening on the red carpet. I love how classic silhouettes can work for so many different shapes & sizes, proving that fashion can not only be evolutionary, but also timeless. Dressing glamorously isn’t just for the red carpet either. Take some inspiration from these ensembles & try a little extra sparkle for your next night out. Break out some ankle strap sandals to amp up your street style. Don’t be afraid try a head-to-toe color for summer & experiment with white. Which celebrity look is your favorite? Who inspires your summer style? Happy Styling!
