All About Platforms with Jessica Alba!

Jessica Alba has always been one of my favorite celebrities to watch out for on the red carpet because several elements of her personal style mirror my own. She loves feminine, classic pieces, never straying too far into an architectural or modern aesthetic, but still appearing current & trendy. While the actress / entrepreneur has been promoting her new series L.A.’s Finest (also starring the always exquisite Gabrielle Union), as well as her brand The Honest Company, Jessica has been all about platforms. I couldn’t help but notice the chunky shoe under many of her dresses during her promotional tour, a choice that I would not personally make, but something I love to look at with her red carpet fashion, which has a very 70s & 90s glam vibe right now.

Below Jessica goes peachy in a Giambattista Valli Spring 2019 dress with beige patent leather platforms & an Alaia cropped shirt with a striped skirt in Jimmy Choo platforms.

Also, at the Monte Carlo TV Festival, Jessica wore an orange Silvia Tcherassi belted dress with a Mulberry bag & satin platforms. For her Honest Beauty Meet & Greet, Jessica looks heavenly in a Self Portrait midi dress with rust suede Salvatore Ferragamo platforms. For the budget shopper looking for trend pieces without breaking the bank, check out some of these affordable & stylish platforms out in stores & online now.

Tee Time!

I’m a sucker for dresses, cardigans, & big jewelry. There’s no question about it. There are some staple pieces that I love to have en masse, including cardigans, ankle pants, & blouses. However, one wardrobe must-have that I haven’t embraced so much is the classic t-shirt!

(gasp)

…Perhaps this is because I always relied on the cozy ease of a t-shirt for my sleepwear & not so much to mix with my day pieces. T-shirts are an easy way to play off of busy patterns, bold textures, & trendy companions, which is why I’m featuring some great deals on colorful, classic, & trendy t-shirts.

SHOP: navy crewneck Hampton tee @New York & Company (available in 4 colors in size XS – XXL), blue pocket tee @LOFT (available in 4 colors in size XS – XXL), coral square-neck trim tee @dressbarn (available in six colors in size XS – XL, shop 1X – 3X here, pale blue v-neck tee @Gap (available in 17 colors in size XS – XXL), A New Day white crewneck tee @Target (available in 4 colors in size XS – XXL), & green jersey tee @H&M (available in 7 colors in size XXS – XXL).

No matter what your favorite neckline is, t-shirts really are for everyone. There are so many styles to consider from crewneck to v-neck to square-neck to split-neck, which is what makes t-shirts so versatile & compatible to offset a busy look to keep in minimal with all solids. Any of these tees could be worn with jeans, tucked into a skirt, with printed pants, or under a sleeveless dress, creating a new layer of possibilities in outfit building. Consider coordinating any of these items to build your next comfy t-shirt chic look:

SHOP: beaded flower necklace @dressbarn, gold chain choker @Forever 21, blue paisley Audrey ankle pant @New York & Company, Match Made midi skirt @ModCloth, green gingham sandals @GOjane, & leopard Pixie pant @Old Navy.

08/02/2017 Darling of the Day: Blake Lively Embraces Hi-Low Style with Old Navy, Stuart Weitzman, Fendi & More!

This summer is a trendy season, where tops feature all sorts of the surprises like cold shoulders, off the shoulders, cut-outs, ruffles, pleats, & keyholes. The same goes for jeans with distressed details & that ripped effect. Trends come & go, however, a classic button down & a pair of skinny jeans will stand the test of time. Former Gossip Girl actress Blake Lively is proof of just that in her latest look while taking a stroll on Long Island with family this week. What’s especially inspiring about this outfit is that Blake combines the best of hi-low fashion in a pair of Old Navy‘s Rockstar skinny jeans with designer pieces from Stuart Weitzman, Fendi, Frame, & Jennifer Meyer.

SHOP: shawl collar button down shirt @Frame, Rockstar skinny jeans @Old Navy (available in sizes 0-18), Jennifer Meyer cross bar necklace @Ylang 23, Fendi minibackpack @Farfetch, & Stuart Weitzman pearl sandal @Nordstrom.

The jeans are easy to find in order to recreate this look for a Style Darling on a budget. However, I found pieces that recall the essence of Blake’s effortless style with embellished details & sophisticated accessories, all of which are perfect for a summer day off.

SHOP: shirt @Express, LC Lauren Conrad necklace @Kohl’s, plus shirt @Talbots, floral mini backpack @Forever 21, & pearl chunky sandals @GOjane.

Splurge of Save… On Light Blue Suede Ankle Strap Sandals for Spring!

My goal, as of late, when it comes to my everyday outfits and sharing style tips on Style Darling Daily, is try something new. This includes combinations of separates that I hadn’t thought of previously, as well as only investing in special new additions that not only stand apart from other items I already own, but will also serve multiple purposes. I’ve realized that in the past, I’ve sought out dresses, shoes, & more that thrill me in the moment to add to my wardrobe, without considering their need in the long run. In order to better maintain my closet & finances, I’m being much more careful about how I approach styling.

With that, spring is underway & I’m trying to break away from my usual all-black or only black & white routine. Spring is all about soft, light colors, embracing pastels & brighter hues like nobody’s business. When I was recently perusing through my daily barrage of emails from my favorite stores, I saw a shoe trend that I just couldn’t stop thinking about. Normally, I’m not a trend chaser, sticking to what’s classic & works for my specific body type & daily needs. Ankle strap sandals have always been a little tricky. I haven’t been able to find a comfortable pair in recent years, though I’ve written much about the sleek & delicate style (here), but when I saw that so many different designers & retailers were pitching light blue suede ankle strap sandals for spring, my mind was racing with all the styling possibilities—with dresses, pencil skirts, cropped jeans, & so many more!

It doesn’t hurt to have a little celebirty inspiration when it comes to this particular shoe style, showing all the different colors & ways to wear them. This includes German starlet Diane Kruger, supermodel Kendall Jenner, Oscar-winner Emma Stone, blogger / actress Ashley MadekweOrange Is The New Black star Taylor Schilling, & pop star Rihanna

We all have different styling expectations & budgets, which is why I wanted to share the six above pairs of shoes, ranging in price from $21 – $400, including some very well-known, quality brands, as well as more affordable options to try this spring for a weekend brunch, Easter with the family, or a fashionable date night look.

Accessories Access: Laser Cut Handbags, Shoes, & Belts for Spring!

In getting ready for spring (because it still isn’t here on Long Island—though we experienced two very magical spring-ish days before massive blizzards hit), I’m looking ahead, specifically to the trends I can’t wait to explore. One of the easiest ways to get into the mood of a new season is with accessories. My goal is to turn to some staple & classic pieces that I’ve collected from past seasons for my own looks. However, for some inspiration, I love seeing what’s new & stylish in stores & online right now to get me even more into a spring state of mine. Since I’m always interested in ways to mix patterns & textures to create a detailed & sophisticated look, I love the idea of laser cut accessories, which are typically faux leather, modern & feminine, & created in soft & neutral tones, to offset bold hues, floral prints, & abstract color combinations, especially when it comes to handbags, shoes, & belts. To achieve an affordable & fashionable take on spring, I’ve scoured the web & some of my favorite go-to stores to find the chicest ways to elevate your outfit, as well as help Style Darlings to transition from these last remaining chilly winter days & into a brighter & lighter spring style.

SHOP: black & white tote @dressbarn, nude scalloped crossbody @ASOS, beige handbag @Target, & white Western crossbody @Express.

SHOP: blue pointy toe flats @GOjane, white d’Orsay flats @Old Navy, black Darlene flats @Target, & blush dress sandals @Charlotte Russe

SHOP: pink stretch belt @Charming Charlie, bone skinny belt @Old Navy, & black faux leather belt @Banana Republic

Luxury Look-Alikes for Less: Affordable Flats, Heels, & Booties for the Holidays!

When it comes to putting together the perfect holiday looks throughout the season, I’m always thinking about both style & comfort for wherever I’m headed. Additionally, as I’m shopping around for special extras as I plan which events I’m attending, my shoe choices sometimes inform how the rest of my look is going to come together. With that in mind, I’m budget-conscious, but also very inspired by the trendiest, luxury designs on the market since details like lace, glitz, texture, & color are so important in expressing my mood & personality. As I perused some of my favorite online resources, I saw several common themes for fall / winter shoes, which allowed me to seek out lower price points to fill my wardrobe & heart with more footwear joy!

As we approach the holidays, I’m pretty obsessed with a pointy toe flat because it resolves the issue I always had about wearing flats with a pencil skirt or sheath dress. I always felt like my legline was never justly enhanced by a sweet ballet flat, but when the pointy toe flat trend rolled around, I knew there was so much styling potential. ‘Tis the season for some sparkle! Therefore, finding the below sparkly flats immediately made me think about how they add and elegant pop of shine to an LBD, sweater dress with tights, or even dressing up a chunky sweater with leggings.

SHOP: (left) Giuseppe Zannoti embellished flats @Farfetch & (right) pointed toe flats @H&M.

Perhaps the funnest recent trend to hit flats is the pom pom. It’s eye-catching & playful, which screams holiday-ready, especially in the always neutral black where you can style up a fit & flare dress, lace shorts & blouse, or tweed suit separates. Perhaps this trend might not work for your everyday shoe needs, but it’s a cheeky & fashion forward way to have a great time at a holiday party!

SHOP: (left) Gucci mink pom pom flats @BySymphony & (right) furry pomp pom flats @GOjane.

A pair of black pumps is must-have for any time of the year. When selecting how to transition your day look to night when leaving to office & hitting up a cocktails with friends, mixing up textures from classic leather to rich velvet will help do the trick. It’s not secret that the right pair of pumps will change your posture more confidently, but with these, you can strut your stuff in style with an unexpected & luxe detail of velvet.

SHOP: (left) Jimmy Choo Romy pumps @My Theresa & (right) velvet stiletto pumps @Wet Seal.

Lastly, fall is all about the ankle bootie! When you’re looking for a combination of edgy & feminine, a touch of lace hugging across the foot adds interest. The delicate detail will only amplify your other accessories like a thick patent belt over a shirt dress or houndstooth in a scarf over a trench. You can walk tall knowing that your outfit is slaying with each step, but you’re not breaking the bank either!

Fab in 4 Ways: A Crochet Skirt for Day, Date, Work, & Weekend!

I recently had a conversation with a friend / coworker about the perks of our job, one being all the styling possibilities for certain items that can be worn for a variety of occasions. Thus the inspiration for this post, I couldn’t help thinking about how quickly the summer is going by, & that fall fashion is currently in stores. Blending the new with the past season while keeping a budget in mind is a very present factor when I’m considering how to build new looks from my wardrobe. Transitioning pieces from season to season is really how you can get the most from your fashionable investment, which can also surprise you when planning a day out with friends, a special date night, what to wear for an important work meeting, as well as when you’re headed away for the weekend.

It didn’t take long before I came across this versatile crochet scalloped skirt from @Dress Barn (shop misses available in small – large & plus available in 1X – 2X here. I have the skirt from last spring (in more of a creamy ivory tone) & I was stuck on how to style it, especially since there’s so much detail in the crochet of the skirt. Gladly, this design was returning to stores in a neutral taupe, perfect for coordinating for any season. In the fall, try this skirt with knee boots & a chunky sweater, or for winter with a blouse, tights, & ankle booties. However, when thinking about all of the styling possibilities, I’m excited to share four fabulous ways to wear this skirt, including for day, date, work, & weekend.

Basics for a Bargain: Black Pencil Skirts for Every Body Type & Budget!

You know the old saying, “If you can’t stop thinking about it, buy it”? Well, that circulated in my head & heart all weekend… about a black pencil skirt. Mind you, I have a few black pencil skirts, all in different materials & cuts, but one particular caught my eye recently & I couldn’t stop thinking about the styling possibilities, especially for my next stylish photo shoot. It’s a staple for any Style Darling at any size, that’s for sure. This isn’t news in the fashion world. Magazines everywhere have been championing pencil skirts for every shape as a way to get the most out of a wardrobe without breaking the bank. Since I gave in to the “buy it” theory, I was simultaneously inspired to explore every which way a pencil skirt can enliven your style.

Check out the A-listers below to get inspired by all kinds of black pencil skirts & style choices, including blogger / actress Jamie Chung, designer / author Lauren ConradMad Men star Christina Hendricks, Aussie actress Rebel Wilson, the flawless Kerry Washington, & the one & only, Jennifer Lopez.

Jamie Chung, Lauren Conrad, Christina Hendricks, Rebel Wilson, Kerry Washington, & Jennifer Lopez.Pencil skirts aren’t just for the office either. Mix up your pencil skirt look with a graphic tee, peplum top, button down shirt, turtleneck, or body suit, for example. Wear one on a date night, going out with girl friends, or when running daily errands. The possibilities are endless for the basic bottom, especially if you’re looking to dress down something glitzy or elevate a casual top. Play with minimalism or menswear, perhaps even utilitarian or bombshell styles all when wearing a pencil skirt.

The suggestions below barely scrape the surface of what you can do with your ensemble, especially when you can wear a pencil skirt any season.

06/24/2016 Darling of the Day: Angelina Jolie’s Easy Breezy Summer LBD & Strappy Flats!

I can talk (or write, in this case) for hours about shoes. That’s always been the case for me. Yeah, I’m that girl, a shoe girl! I have to say (or write, in this case) that my relationship with shoes has evolved over the years in the most strangely sensible way too. Once I transitioned from working a job in an office (where sitting meant I could really wear any & every shoe I could stick my feet in) to a commuting job in the city & most currently as a sales associate in the retail world, my shoe needs have drastically & painstakingly changed. Don’t get me wrong, I still gasp in admiration & find high heels sexy as hell. However, my everyday shoes are usually flats that I can actually walk in (go figure!). I save the heels for special occasions of going out with my boyfriend, days in the classroom during the semesters (not much walking to do there), & specific photo opportunities (when I’m really digging an outfit combination).

During one recent & busy night at work, I had a conversation with a lovely but frustrated customer for whom I was helping put an outfit together. Once a top & skirt found, our conversation turned to shoes. Of course, any kind of black pump (slingback, stiletto, or wedge) would make for a party-ready look, but then I suggested a nude shoe, which time and time again, has proved successful, especially when it comes to a summer ensemble. By now, you’re probably wondering what this anecdote has to do with the title of this post about. While I rely on a nude shoe as my go-to for many stylish summer outfits, my fashion world was rocked once more scrolling through social media, discovering that during a New York City day with her son, Knox, Angelina Jolie simplified a classic LBD-wayfarer shades look with nude ankle tie flats by Gianvito Rossi (shop here).

Darling of the Day - Angelina Jolie's Easy Breezy Summer LBD & Strappy FlatsI was instantly inspired by this delightful & obvious (really!) style choice that I had to share its versatility with my readers. Speaking of evolutions, the ballet flat has come a very long way & as a result of that journey, shoppers don’t have to break their budget (even when there’s a time crunch) to achieve this level of style perfection. Really, this sort of shoe would amplify a belted cotton frock with a cardigan, a cargo vest & skimmers, or a sheath mini & blazer.

SHOP: Misses tee dress @Old Navy (available in sizes XS – XXL), black sunglasses @Icing, lace-up pointed flats @Charlotte Russe, Plus dress @Forever 21, Betsey Johnson sunglasses @Nordstrom Rack, Wild Diva ankle strap flats @Aeropostale (also available in black), Petites Worthington dress @JCPenney, ELLE sunglasses @Kohl’s, & ankle strap d’orsay flats @GOjane.

Do you like to wear ankle strap or lace-up flats? Where do you shop for your summer shoe must-haves? Do you like Angelina Jolie’s street style? How do you like to style a day-ready little black dress? How does summer inspire your style? Happy Styling!
