Color Me Style: Fall’s Must-Have Mustard Pieces, Inspired by Blake Lively, Jennifer Lopez, Taylor Swift, & More!

One of the biggest colors to hit stores in anticipation of fall is mustard, a rich gold hue that’s perfect for transitioning from summer to a cooler, crisper season. It’s not as tricky a shade to pull off as one might think, especially when there’s so much celebrity inspiration to consider when it comes to dresses, separates, outerwear, & accessories that will redefine how you look at mustard, making your outfit pop. This is evident with the always perfect Blake Lively in a leather dress during Milan Fashion Week, Scream star Bella Thorne‘s street style in corduroy overalls, The Twilight Saga actress Ashley Greene‘s casual look in a boyfriend cardigan, & The Honest Company entrepreneur Jessica Alba in a midi length skirt paired with feminine black extras.

If an all-day mustard look just isn’t your thing, then take some inspiration from bold outerwear pieces on American Idol judge Jennifer Lopez & reality star Kim Kardashian West, as well as statement footwear on pop singer Taylor Swift whose pumps pop against her black & white outfit & socialite / designer darling Olivia Palermo for choosing to dress down her leather leggings with slipper flats.

Watch This Style: Jennifer Lopez’s Endless Dress During Her ‘Feel the Light’ American Idol Performance!

Jennifer Lopez on American Idol, performing "Feel the Light."

During this week’s American Idol, judge & all around powerhouse performer / style icon, Jennifer Lopez, hit the stage, premiering her very first ballad single, “Feel the Light,” for the upcoming animated film Home. While the song was all sorts of warm & fuzzy & inspiring, what really made the performance a stunner was Lopez in a (at first) white stage-covering gown by designer Mariel Haenn. Once J-Lo began to sing, the circular, dramatic train, which spanned 20-feet in circumference, became a canvas for sparkling projected images of space & heartfelt animation from the movie, featuring character (voiced by the always amazing Rihanna & The Big Bang Theory‘s Jim Parsons).

Like Jenny from the Block herself, the performance was a lovely combination, truly meant to go viral, of both fashion, film, & music. Watch the video below to see what all the fuss was about.

Jennifer is having a pretty fantastic 2015, especially after all the hype behind her steamy thriller, The Boy Next Door, as well as stunning red carpet appearances during this past awards season. Things don’t seem to be slowing down for her either, especially with American Idol in the thick of a very competitive season, & her role in the NBC crime drama Shades of Blue with Sopranos actress Drea de Matteo. There’s sure to be more fabulous press junkets & fashion moments to come!

What do you think of Jennifer’s performance? Were you wowed by the dress? Cover Craze: Michelle Obama’s 2nd Vogue Cover, Kim K for Cosmo, Nicki Minaj’s Makeunder For Elle, & More!

I know I’m looking forward to April for more than the fabulous spring fashions & big upcoming movies, but I have a lot of exciting professional changes ahead of me. However, there’s so much going on in terms of our favorite magazines & the big international headlines are looking more & more fabulous, guiding where fashion is headed as the weather begins to warm up. In this latest post for Cover Craze, I went all out with a total of 15 covers that I just couldn’t stop looking at & reading up on.

The biggest news in covers is that First Lady Michelle Obama returns to Vogue for the April 2013 issue in a sleek two-tone Reed Krakoff sheath dress, photographed by the always impressive Annie Leibovitz. In an interview with Jonathan Van Meter, FLOTUS discusses parenting, marriage, her duties as First Lady, as well as fashion. She shares with readers, “If you’re comfortable in your clothes it’s easy to connect with people & make them feel comfortable as well.”

Michelle Obama for Vogue, Julie Bowen for Lucky, & Emily VanCamp for Marie Claire Australia April 2013.

On the cover of Lucky, two-time Emmy winner & star of Modern Family, Julie Bowen, looks like the modern & sexy cool mom that we all wish we had, wearing pieces from Tommy Hilfiger, Michael Stars, & Pandora. Inside the svelte blond is contemporary & chic in J.Crew, Juicy Couture, Jimmy Choo, & DKNY. Speaking of TV stars, Revenge actress Emily VanCamp looks smoldering in a cut-out Michael Kors dress on the cover of Marie Claire Australia, sharing the spotlight with her dashing male co-stars  Gabriel Mann (Nolan), Barry Sloane (Aiden), & Nick Wechsler (Jack).

Marie Claire shows The Incredible Burt Wonderstone actress Olivia Wilde in a sexy sheer blue dress, as she talks about her engagement to Saturday Night Live star Jason Sudekis. As for Marie Claire UK, Mila Kunis, star of Oz the Great & Powerful, talks about her breakout performance in Black Swan, upcoming Hollywood projects, & taking a break from back-to-back movies.

Olivia Wilde for Marie Claire, Mila Kunis for Marie Claire UK, & Zooey Deschanel for In Style April 2013.

New Girl star Zooey Deschanel, who takes the cover of In Style in a stunning Carolina Herrera gown. Also featured in the issue are pieces by Oscar de la Renta, Bottega Veneta, Marc Jacobs, Balenciaga, Chanel, & Nicholas Kirkwood, as she talks about her love of all things nail art & being a role model for girls.

I featured Selena Gomez‘s breezy spring look for Harper’s Bazaar in my last Haute Headlines post, but what was awestruck by the young star’s shoot by Terry Richardson featuring red carpet looks by Akris, Dior, Calvin Klein, & Prada. The down-to-earth Texas native & star of Spring Breakers talks about her family traditions, stardom, & her new role as a single lady.

Elle unzips rapper / American Idol judge Nicki Minaj without the big neon hair or exaggerated eyelashes that she’s always famous for donning. Also, Elle UK pays homage to another star in music, Rihanna, who looks effortless in a checkered Louis Vuitton outfit (like from the collection we’ve seen on Kirsten Dunst & Kerry Washington). She talks about her future, family, & more from the pixie-cutted pop star.

Selena Gomez for Harper's Bazaar, Nicki Minaj for Elle, Rihanna for Elle UK April 2013.

Kim Kardashian is always in the news & while photogs are tracking her pregnancy style, you can see her pre-baby-bump curves on the cover of Cosmopolitan in a Sophia Loren-inspired look. Smash star Katharine McPhee look positively fresh-faced for front & back covers of Women’s Health. She models various different makeup looks including striking blue eyeliner, enhanced cheeks, & bold red lips. Oscar-winning actress Jennifer Lawrence is the focus of People Style Watch & for her stylish red carpet looks in Stella McCartney, Hugo, & Michael Kors. Also, the mag looks at her street style in Thakoon & Tory Burch, as well as her changing hairstyles for previous films like Silver Linings Playbook, The Hungry Games, & X-Men: First Class.

Kim Kardashian for Cosmopolitan, Katharine McPhee for Women's Health, & Jennifer Lawrence for People Style Watch April 2013.

Lastly, we see country crooner Taylor Swift for Vanity Fair, talking about how she’s the target of constant jokes regarding her love life, including the jab that Tina Fey & Amy Poehler made during last month’s Golden Globes. A topless Kate Hudson let her natural beauty shine for Glamour, decked out in layers of Chanel necklaces. The mom of two talks about her romance with Muse frontman, motherhood in her thirties, & how she balances it all. I almost missed seeing Emily VanCamp‘s second April cover for Canada’s Fashion magazine, but I was glad to catch the former ballerina & leading lady for the Captain America sequel in this gorgeous snake-print dress & necklace, both by Gucci.

Basics For A Bargain: Swap In Some Sweaters, Inspired By Carrie Underwood, Nicole Richie, Rosie Huntington-Whiteley, & More!

As if Long Island hasn’t been riddled enough with weather, it’s snowing now & I bundled up in my favorite sweater to brave the day.  This was my inspiration when I clicked through some of my top go-to websites to find must-have sweaters for the fall-winter season- no matter where you live.  Because sweaters are bulkier, often requiring special care, & available in an array of materials, I don’t necessarily admonish anyone who is looking for an investment piece to add to their cold weather wardrobe.  However, let’s take a look at some stylish celebrities who have been spotted in recent months donning some fashionable sweaters.

Actress Rose Byrne accents her textured black sweater with a ruffled skirt & leopard belt at the debut short film for Target, Falling For You.  Country crooner Taylor Swift looks all sorts of ladylike with maroon sweater by French Connection, paired with polka dot jeans by AG Adriano Goldschmied, Charlotte Olympia flats, & a tasteful string of pearls. Jessica Alba plays with menswear in her Alice + Olivia sweater to contrast her printed pants & bold cap toe pumps. Former Heroes star Ali Larter mixes sophistication with urban chic in a shawl collar sweater with olive cargo pants, ankle booties, & a Coach bag.

You can count on American Idol Carrie Underwood to bring the glitz to an appearance at The Late Show with David Letterman, wearing a sequin sweater, skinny jeans, & strappy wedges. Model / actress Rosie Huntington-Whiteley goes all-black in a fringed black sweater & liquid leather leggings when arriving at the Sao Paulo Fashion Week celebration.  Lastly, designer Nicole Richie goes casual in a zebra print Proenza Schouler sweater with skinny black jeans & suede pumps.

For under $50, you can find heart details, metallic threading, animal-inspiration, feminine accents, & some sparkle when it comes to wearing a sweater.  Of course, there’s the classic cable knit or argyle that you can wear to the office, but there are lots of ways to look ladylike & modern without having to sacrifice style when it comes to chunky knitwear.

I love the fun & flirty colors in the colored animal pattern sweater ($27.80) from Forever 21 is a cool way to accent a pencil skirt with a metallic collar necklace, or to wear during the day with skinny jeans & knee boots.  If you’re headed on a double date or want to stay warm when going out at night, check out Expressmetallic wedge sweater ($19.99), which would look hot with leather shorts & tights or colored jeans.  I’ve surprised myself lately by finding an interest in stripes (I’m not typically a stripey), but I love the color contrast & splash of sparkle in the Varick Street sequin stripe v-neck sweater ($46.95) from New York & Company, which is available in a whole range of colors if you’re not into the yellow-gray combo.

As seen on many Style Darlings like Alexa Chung & Rihanna, wearing novelty pieces is a big trend, & this includes LC by Lauren Conrad‘s lurex heart sweater ($34.99) from Kohl’s, which is also sold in black & white, as well as tan & black.  Pair this fun top with wide leg jeans & a scarf, or polish the look with textured a-line skirt & pointed toe heels.  Lastly, @Venus you can find knit sweater with bow ($22.00) in light brown which can be easily played up with a fancy lace pencil skirt or some leather leggings.

What sweater styles do you like to wear when the weather gets cold? Are there sweater trends that you love to follow? Watch This Style: Mariah Carey’s Top 5 Most Stylish Music Videos!

Mariah Carey has been in the news a whole lot lately, now that the Grammy-winning singer is the newest judge to join American Idol, as well as releasing her latest single, “Triumphant,” from her forthcoming fourteenth studio album.  However, I thought I’d take a look back at some of my favorite videos by the New York native since she’s one of the biggest selling artists in my lifetime.

Not only do she & I share a love for Marilyn Monroe & Hello Kitty, but she’s constantly trying to show off her bombshell style, even though some attempts are very pageant-ish & don’t make the best dressed lists. When it comes to music, Mariah knows what works for her & I’d like to take a moment to celebrate her accomplishments via my favorite music videos (for their style & songs)! This list includes “We Belong Together,” “Don’t Forget About Us,” “I Still Believe,” “Heartbreaker,” & “Always Be My Baby.”

I’d also like to add that I picked “We Belong Together,” which is my all-time favorite Mariah song, also b/c I think that whoever was responsible for her hair & makeup really nailed her look with elegance & femininity.  The dewy pink lips, fluffy & old school lashes, & natural overall look really make the video one of the most memorable for me, which juxtapose (yes, I used that word) the scenes when she’s wearing lingerie, a tunic mini, & princess-like wedding gown. Happy Styling!

Super Style Wishlist: Jennifer Lopez Breaks Out In Neon Michael Kors & Casadei!

The latest season of American Idol is in full swing & Jennifer Lopez is stepping up her style every time she’s photographed.  At a recent press event in Brazil, the multi-talented celeb hit the red carpet in one of spring’s latest trends: neons. She stepped out in a stunning Michael Kors crepe crewneck dress ($1995.00), which is available at Bergdorf Goodman.  She paired the figure-flattering sheath with Casadei silk pumps ($677.00), from Far Fetch.

I’m featuring these in Super Style Wishlist b/c the combination is just too stylish to be true.  Of course the price tag is way out of reach for Style Darlings on a budget.  Jennifer has been a big fan of the designs by Michael Kors for years, & if you’d like to check out more creations worn by the Project Runway judge, check out links to Macy’s, Net-A-Porter, Nordstrom, & Neiman Marcus.  Happy Styling!

Watch This Style / Magazine Must-Haves: ‘Self’ Cover Girl Carrie Underwood’s Latest Video For “Good Girl!”

I’m a big Carrie Underwood fan… fan of her music & her enviable red carpet style! I have to say that her music videos are among some of my favorites to watch b/c the American Idol winner is just so magnetic in front of the camera.  She was meant to wear stylish duds & belt out the big notes, which is why I’m featuring her latest music video for “Good Girl” here on Style Darling.

Also, she’s been on my mind after reading the very intelligent and insightful article on her for the April issue of Self magazine- one of my favorite go-to sources for healthy living tips.  The singer talks about how she made the change from being a vegetarian to becoming mostly vegan.  Also, she’s a positive role model for women everywhere b/c of her confidence and down-to-earth attitude, all of which is very evident in the article.

Getting back to the music… Of course, I’ll be including this video for “Good Girl” in a future post of Carrie’s Top 10 Most Stylish Videos at some point, but this video has just recently been released & you have to see it! If you love female-empowering music, country music, or well-style videos, then this is one meant for you! For more of my favorite music videos, check out what I’ve posted about Gwen Stefani, Madonna, & Lady Gaga! Happy Styling!

On American Idol, Jennifer Lopez  has stormed the small screen in every appearance!  Not only are audiences watching to see the competition, but I know half of why I’m watching is to see what the multi-talented fashion icon is wearing!  She sports uber-feminine ruffles, throwback scarves, glamour girl bombshell sparkles, modern minimalism, & 80’s chic all in a matter of a few weeks.  Especially after Jennifer’s recent appearance at this year’s Grammy’s, she’s proved that she still a fabulous force to be reckoned with! Stayed tuned for American Idol every Tuesday & Wednesday night on FOX for more lessons on style!
