It’s been quite the fashionable fall, & there’s just too much to talk about, but I’m sure that these top 10 images in my latest gallery are sure to blow away even the most critical of style critics. As signs of autumn have never been more present here on Long Island, it’s impossible not to look to the most buzzed about celebrities without some major fashion envy. Some of the favorites from the last week or so include a dressed down Selena Gomez in a white t-shirt with olive buckled leather pants from Rachel Zoe Collection, gold hoops by Melinda Maria, & black leather sneakers, as well as Oscar-winner Natalie Portman donning a cashmere sweater with a silver brocade full skirt by Christian Dior & black Charlotte Olympia pumps. Also, I’m loving the formal styles of Carrie Underwood‘s beaded blue number by Randi Rahm, Diane Kruger‘s graphic print frock by Cushnie et Ochs, & Michelle Williams‘ sleek LBD from Louis Vuitton.

Also featured in the gallery below are Style Darling regulars like blogger-actress Ashley Madekwe in a Thakoon design, Nashville crooner Hayden Panettiere in Georges Hobeika, Kate Beckinsale in a red Donna Karan draped dress with a Jimmy Choo pumps, the usually shocking Miley Cyrus looking elegant in an emerald Marc Jacobs halter gown, & Gravity star Sandra Bullock showing off her killer figure in an LBD by DSquared2.

Runway Rundown: Donna Karan’s Pre-Fall 2013 Collection!

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

Donna Karan is certainly one of the great American designers, & the latest Pre-Fall 2013 Collection proves just that! The line includes plenty of classic black & white combinations, mixed with jackets, tops, trousers, & skirts, with oxblood, navy, & charcoal accents. What’s so refreshing about this collection are the modern shapes for the pieces, including the dresses, which are sure to impress on the red carpet if worn by celebrity fans like Ashley Greene, Katharine McPhee, Lucy Lui, Demi Moore, & Taylor Swift. I’m hoping to see some of the more formal gowns show up during the awards season since we still have a few more ceremonies to see!

Which looks are your favorites? Do you like the basic color palette? Would you wear any of these pieces? For more from Runway Rundown, check out galleries including Alice + Olivia, J. Mendel, Rachel Zoe Collection, & Hervé Léger by Max Azria! Happy Styling!

The 2013 Golden Globe Awards are still airing, but I just couldn’t wait any longer to post this very thorough gallery. Red Carpet Review: Small Screen Stars At The Critic’s Choice Television Awards!

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

Of course movie stars get a lot of credit for showing up to premieres & awards shows in couture gowns, but some of the faces that we see on a weekly basis on the small screen don’t always get the credit they deserve, or attention for their fabulous red carpet style.  In this edition of Red Carpet Review, the stars who walked the red carpet at this week’s Critic’s Choice Television Awards stepped up their style in gorgeous cocktail dresses, jaw-dropping gowns, & classic designs.  Some of my favorites of the night include Shameless star Emmy Rossum in a stunning gold Donna Karan dress, Kate Walsh of Private Practice in a sparkling yellow Jenny Packham mini, the cutest geek on TV Zooey Deschanel in a sweet belted Oscar de la Renta dress, & the always lovely Julianne Moore, who won for her role as Sarah Palin in Game Change, in a body-conscious Jason Wu dress. Check out the styles & leave comments of who you think got it right! Happy Styling!

Cover Craze: Miranda Kerr Hits Brooklyn For Harper’s Bazaar!

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

In the April 2012 issue of Harper’s Bazaar, with actress Mila Kunis on the cover, Victoria’s Secret model Miranda Kerr is featured in a 50s-inspired fashion spread shot in the fine city of Brooklyn by photographer Terry Richardson.  Now I might’ve just flipped through this spread in the past, surmising it up just for the fashion, but now as a full-time writer in Brooklyn (although I’m still commuting home to Long Island), I can appreciate the beauty behind the city that has taught me more about all the reasons why I love the suburbs! Yes, I said it!

However, I think this is an amazing shoot, especially with the regal & vintage designs of Dolce & Gabbana, Oscar de la Renta, Derek Lam, Donna Karan, Bulgari, Van Cleef & Arpels, Elizabeth & James, Louis Vuitton, Marc Jacobs, & Prada (just to name a few). There’s so much high fashion going on here, Miranda puts the women of Mad Men to shame! She looks like an even more glamorous mix between Marilyn Monroe, Audrey Hepburn, and Grace Kelly! Not to mention that below the gallery here is an exclusive video behind the shoot, which was inspired by 1960s Italian actress, Monica Vitti.

I used to obsessively tear out the pages of my favorite fashion magazines to keep in what I like to call an “inspiration book” to help me put outfits together, get motivated to blog, or for that one day way way waaaay in the future when I’d dabble in my own desiging, but instead of collecting the stacks of paper in a super heavy binder, I’ve decided to post them for my readers. What do you think of Miranda’s shoot? Do you recognize these spots in Brooklyn?

Basics for a Bargain: Dispell Those Turtleneck Myths with Inspiration from Claudia Schiffer, Keira Knightley, & More (Dedicated to Laurie)!

My dear friend Laurie, who I’ve dedicated a past blog to, has inspired this post with a question about the myth that turtlenecks = frompy.  However, here is the evidence that they’re not!  Of course I’m not a turtleneck-donning Style Darling myself, or anything with collars for that matter, but I can say that looking at the celebs below, there’s no way turtlenecks can be so wrong when they look so right- especially on my dear Laurie who always looks fashionable in a turtleneck.

Over the last few years, we’ve seen turtlenecks come back in style, in the most classic way, just like a good pair of trousers, dark denim jeans, a pencil skirt, & a button-down shirt. Jennifer Connelly layers her turtleneck with a blazer & pleated Balenciaga mini skirt & opaque tights.  Supermodel Claudia Schiffer makes a spring-like tunic fall-ready with a turtleneck, leggings, & heavy cardigan. Kristin Chenoweth looks super cozy in a furry sweater jacket, skinny jeans, & knee boots with her classic gray turtleneck underneath.  Reese Witherspoon multi-tasks in a black mock turtleneck, aviators, straight leg jeans, & embellished flats with a Rebecca Minkoff crossbody bag.  Amanda Seyfried covers up in the cold with a black turtleneck under a bright red romper dress for a TV appearance & matching red lips.  Keira Knightley looks like a modern-day Audrey Hepburn in a belted pencil dress & turtleneck ensemble with round toe Sergio Rossi pumps.  Disney darling Selena Gomez downplays her printed pants with a short-sleeved turtleneck & layered chains from LOFT.

And now the basic we’ve all been waiting for…. here are some turtlenecks, in stores now! @Old Navy, the ‘tropical storm’ turtleneck ($17.94) is available in five other colors & can be mixed & matched up with a skirt suit or puffer vest with white skinny jeans.  Each color is available in sizes XS – XXL for Style Darlings of all shapes! Try out some jewel tones & primary colors with the classic turtleneck sweater ($34.93) from The Limited, marked down from $49.90.  Take a skinny belt, like shown on the model, & add some modern edge to the underestimated basic piece that would look contemporary with classic stud earrings & bangles.  Style&co created this gray & black colorblock turtleneck ($21.98), available @Macy’s, also in black & red. It’s prefect for a pair of leather shorts & hoop earrings. Add some straight leg cigarette pants & platform boots to create an mod / equestrian look.

If you’re a mock turtleneck kind of gal, check out Target‘s short-sleeve mock in black which can help you recreate Keira’s look, or would be fabulous with a houndstooth pencil skirt for work! Also, this turtleneck reminds me of a Fashion Flashback post featuring Marilyn Monroe with white pants & bouncy blonde curls.

Work a built-in belt with a sweater turtleneck ($17.80) like this from Forever 21 for a denim skirt & boots when you grab some hot chocolate with your gal pals on weeknight.  Probably my favorite of all the turtlenecks is the shirred turtleneck in deep teal ($28.00) by Jennifer Lopez for Kohl’s.  Also available in heather gray & black, this top is marked down from $40.00!

For those of you who still need some extra convincing, celebrities like Zoe Saldana, Emma Roberts, Lake Bell, Beyonce, & Cameron Diaz show that covering up in a turtleneck dress can be just as sexy & polished like a cocktail dress on the red carpet.  Check out a previous Basics for a Bargain post, featuring sweater dresses to see stars like Heather Graham, Eva Mendes, & Nicole Richie sporting fall-ready turtleneck style sweater dresses without any worry about if it’s a do or don’t.

Turtlenecks have come a long way.  Stay away from anything too festive, adorned with holiday-themes, & you won’t look like a fuddy-duddy.  Look for a turtleneck in a strong solid color, or in a modern print. Remember: Since turtlenecks are a must-have basic, you’re setting up the foundation to a really fashionable ensemble that could be accented with with long necklaces, a vest, belted bootcut jeans, a leather corset, mini skirt, or figure-flattering pencil skirt.

Also, for a final persuasion to any nay-sayers, check out these stunning runway looks from Chanel, Proenza Schouler, Michael Kors, Valentino, Stella McCartney, & Donna Karan.

Do you have any style myths that you just can’t figure out?  I’d be happy to show off how some celebrity-inspiration can translate into an affordable look.  Do you have any turtleneck stories?  Laurie, I hope this blog does the trick! Happy Styling!

Color Me Style / Red Carpet Review: Ravishing Red for Kate Winslet, Nina Dobrev, & More at the 2011 Emmy’s (Part One)!

At this week’s 63rd Annual Primetime Emmy Awards, RED was the color to wear on the red carpet!  Sometimes red is a tricky color to wear b/c you could blend in, but none of these ladies went unnoticed!  I don’t think I’ve ever seen red look so good, especially on these stars who play with shades of apple, crimson, scarlet, & cherry!

Adrianne Palicki went for a vintage starlet feel in a sweetheart halter gown with a high slit, keeping her hair simple with elegant diamonds.  Connie Britton showed that you don’t have to be twenty years old to look exquisite on the red carpet, in a flowing chiffon gown with drop earrings & bangles.  Lea Michele revealed to E! that she wanted to keep her look simple, but this Marchesa column gown is super chic & flattering on the petite actress with a big voice.  Her straightened hair is the perfect finishing touch to such a glamorous & effortless look.  Kerry Washington presented in a strapless Zuhair Murad gown with a matching clutch & pair of heels by the one & only, Jimmy Choo.

Nina Dobrev made a splash in this red Donna Karan gown with accented diamonds by Neil Lane, a Judith Leiber clutch, & Brian Atwood stilettos.  Sofia Vergara was one of the most talked about nominees & definitely wowed in a scarlet Vera Wang curve-hugging gown with Colombian emerald chandelier earrings.  And last, but not least, Kate Winslet, my favorite nominee of the night, looked polished in a red form-fitting Elie Saab gown with a soft updo & diamond drop earrings.

Check out our previous Red Carpet Review posts, as well as the fun color-themed posts in Color Me Style!  Who wore red the best? Who was your favorite winner of the night?  Be sure to check back this week while I post more & more about Sunday night’s ceremony! Happy Styling!

Red Carpet Review: 2010 Emmy Awards, Featuring Claire Danes, Heidi Klum, Kim Kardashian, & More!

It was obvious that the small screen stars were bringing the larger than life glamour to the red carpet for Sunday’s 62nd Emmy Awards.  All the leading ladies of television were following the trends of black, white, navy, & one-shoulders.  Let’s just start with my absolute favorite of the night. Instantly, I knew that this would be a crowd-pleaser, guaranteed to be published in fashion magazines across the world. Claire Danes, pictured below, in a shimmering Giorgio Armani Prive strapless mermaid dress.  Already it is listed on InStyle‘s Look of the Day.

Surely, Monday night’s presentation of E!‘s Fashion Police will agree with me.  Regretfully, I didn’t get a chance to see the beautiful & talented Claire in the HBO movie Temple Grandin, for which she was nominated, but as soon as I saw this dress, I knew she was going to win for Best Lead Actress in a TV Movie.  Just like when Charlize Theron wore her gold body-hugging Gucci gown to the 2004 Oscars, winning for her role in Monster, & Sandra Bullock wore her gold / silver Marchesa dress to this year’s Oscars, winning for her role in The Blind Side.  A gold dress is a winner’s dress! As for the black trend, I was surprised b/c not many stars take the tricky color under consideration.  Of course, black done the right way is slimming, but for such an elegant affair, to risk losing some of its detail & beauty in photographs is where black goes wrong sometimes.  Anyway, take a look here at Julianna Margulies in L’Wren Scott, Heidi Klum in Marchesa, Eva Longoria-Parker in Robert Rodriguez, Julia Louis Dreyfus in Narciso Rodriguez, & Kelly Osbourne in Tony Ward Couture:

I guess you can’t have black dresses without the white ones & there was no shortage of that at the Emmy’s also.  White was a favorite among celebrities with figure flattering designs, metallic embellishments, & gorgeous hair. Here we have the white selection with Rose Byrne in Gucci, Kim Kardashian in Marchesa, Julie Benz in Pamella Roland Resort 2010, Brooke Burke, & Amber Riley:

An equally regal & stunning choice was navy on the red carpet.  Lea Michele told Ryan Seacrest that she hadn’t worn blue lately & it reminded her of the summer midnight sky.  The romantically decadent color was found in all shapes with dramatic ruffles, ruching, & Grecian draping.  My favorite picks for navy are Lea Michele in Oscar de la Renta, Jayma Mays in Burberry Prorsum, Julie Bowen in J. Mendel, Padma Lakshmi in Marchesa, Edie Falco, & Connie Britton:

Lastly, a trend that’s been all over the runways & red carpets for a few years now that’s always a flattering choice is the one-shoulder look.  The celebrities who embraced this were Emily Blunt in Christian Dior, Jane Lynch in Ali Rahimi, Emily Deschanel in Max Azria Atelier, Nina Dobrev in Zuhair Murad, Elisabeth Moss in Donna Karan, & Cheryl Hines in Zac Posen:

Although I didn’t mention this in my intro, I’d like to point out the risk-takers, in my opinion, who both rocked their looks & maybe didn’t succeed as they’d hoped, but still, they deserve some praise.  I’m not saying that I don’t like these looks, but for me, they qualify as risk-takers.  Whether they were experimenting with lace, beads, prints, shape, or hemline, they stole the attention on the red carpet for just a little bit longer than the rest. Check out Diana Agron in Carolina Herrera, Tina Fey in Oscar de la Renta, Jane Krakowski in Escada, January Jones in Atelier Versace, Rutina Wesley, Sofia Vergara in Carolina Herrera, Jewel in Zuhair Murad, Kristen Wiig, & Maria Menounos in Ralph & Russo:

My predictions on the gowns that will be most knocked off are: Claire Danes’ Armani Prive, January Jones’ Atelier Versace, Kim Kardashian’s Marchesa, Emily Deschanel’s Max Azria Atelier, Heidi Klum’s Marchesa, & Eva Longoria’s Robert Rodriguez.  Also, my only gripe with the whole evening was the absence of past favorites like the cast of Grey’s Anatomy & Desperate Housewives.  Stars like Sandra Oh, Katherine Heigl (well, not anymore), & Ellen Pompeo, as well as Felicity Huffman, Marcia Cross, & Teri Hatcher were always interesting to watch on the red carpet, but alas, a new generation of Gleeks, reality show stars, & vampires have invaded the scene.  Happy Styling!
