Color Me Style: Now Is All About Navy, Featuring Blake Lively, Marchesa, & More!

Somewhere around the corner is spring, & while Pantone’s color of 2014 is orchid, I’ve been seeing so much navy everywhere. I love the idea of this regal neutral all over the runways for spring, breaking away from basic black to match with other bold hues.

Blake Lively, Rose Byrne, & Kate Mara.

A-list celebs have been embracing navy on the red carpet, including Blake Lively & Rose Byrne in head-to-toe Michael Kors looks straight from the runway. Also, House of Cards actress Kate Mara shows off her feminine & edgy side with the crop top trend in lace Dior separates & pointy toe pumps.

Derek Lam, Rebecca Minkoff, & Marchesa Fall 2014 Ready-To-Wear

Also, navy appeared on the runway during New York Fashion Week in all forms. Navy is perfect for casual wear, the office, & a night out, as seen on Derek Lam, Rebecca Minkoff, & Marchesa. There’s a decadence to the marvelous midnight color, which was shown with futuristic cut-outs, mod layered lines, & romantic drama.

To bring the red carpet & runway to your closet, I’ve found a few must-have pieces that will transition easily from winter-to-spring, including the belted button-front shirtdress ($40.00) from Dress Barn. To wear it now, in the midst of yet another wintry snow storm here in New York, coordinate this with tights, knee boots, & a chunky boyfriend sweater.

Dress @Dress Barn $40.00, Peasant Top @Forever 21 $22.80, Top @H&M $17.95, Pants @New York & Company $52.95.

Top off your favorite skinny jeans, pencil skirt, or tuxedo pants with the daydreamer peasant top ($22.80) from Forever 21 & H&M‘s lace top ($17.95). Lastly, get rid of those old, boring pants & trade them in for New York & Company‘s 7th Avenue bootcut pants ($52.95) in windowpane print. Mix up your look with a cashmere sweater, embroidered cardigan, or studded vest.

Kohl’s is quickly becoming one of the leading retailers for designer duds at an affordable price. I’ve previously shared collections from Jennifer Lopez, Narciso Rodriguez, & Lauren Conrad, & have even included the fashionable pieces from Simply Vera Vera Wang. However, the latest DesigNation collection is from Derek Lam, which hit stores this week, with Brazil-inspired color combinations, tropical prints, & a “jungle-meets-city feel,” according to InStyle.

Celebs like Emmy Rossum, Blake Lively, & Kate Bosworth have already been spotted in the trendy looks from the designer’s collection, which is likely to go on sale at an even better price! These summer-ready pieces are perfect if you’re headed on vacation, or looking to pair your current essentials with fresh, edgy new additions. What do you think of the collection? How would you style the separates? Happy Styling!

Cover Craze: Behind-The-Scenes At Jessica Alba’s February 2013 InStyle Cover Shoot!

Jessica Alba for InStyle February 2013

Well, 2013 is shaping up to be one editorially-amazing year since we’ve seen so much from the January & February covers of magazines. My favorite magazine of all, the one that I set time aside for to look through, is InStyle, which is currently celebrating the accomplishments of actress / entrepreneur / author Jessica Alba, who’s founded an eco-friendly children’s company, Honest Company, as well as published her first book, The Honest Life, which teaches readers how to fill their home with eco-friendly & safe products.

During her shoot for the magazine’s cover, she took some time to talk about life as a mother of two, lending her voice for the first time to an animated flick, & her guilty pleasures.  Check out the video to see the smoldering looks from the shoot, including designs by Fendi, Marni, Derek Lam, Gucci, Christian Dior, & lots more!

For more magazine-related posts, check out more from Cover Craze, including where you see the latest from Julianne Hough & The Carrie Dairies Star AnnaSophia Robb, behind-the-scenes with Gwen Stefani during her Vogue shoot, & Jessica Chastain’s four artsy covers for W Magazine! Happy Styling!

Runway Rundown: The Scoop On Derek Lam’s Resort 2013 Collection!

I’ve been very serious lately about my Runway Rundown posts, featuring all the latest designs debuting on the catwalk & one that I was especially excited to see was the Resort 2013 collection by Derek Lam.  I found a link to Elle that showed me the proportionally creative line, featuring separates that are likely to be seen on stars like Angelina Jolie, Alexa Chung, or Emma Stone this season.  While some of it is meant to thrive on the runway, there are plenty of opportunities for inspiration here, especially mixing prints in your own wardrobe.  Also, playing with structure & menswear inspiration is always a fun way to reinterpret old favorites.  Click through the gallery & share which looks make your wishlist! Cover Craze: Miranda Kerr Hits Brooklyn For Harper’s Bazaar!

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

In the April 2012 issue of Harper’s Bazaar, with actress Mila Kunis on the cover, Victoria’s Secret model Miranda Kerr is featured in a 50s-inspired fashion spread shot in the fine city of Brooklyn by photographer Terry Richardson.  Now I might’ve just flipped through this spread in the past, surmising it up just for the fashion, but now as a full-time writer in Brooklyn (although I’m still commuting home to Long Island), I can appreciate the beauty behind the city that has taught me more about all the reasons why I love the suburbs! Yes, I said it!

However, I think this is an amazing shoot, especially with the regal & vintage designs of Dolce & Gabbana, Oscar de la Renta, Derek Lam, Donna Karan, Bulgari, Van Cleef & Arpels, Elizabeth & James, Louis Vuitton, Marc Jacobs, & Prada (just to name a few). There’s so much high fashion going on here, Miranda puts the women of Mad Men to shame! She looks like an even more glamorous mix between Marilyn Monroe, Audrey Hepburn, and Grace Kelly! Not to mention that below the gallery here is an exclusive video behind the shoot, which was inspired by 1960s Italian actress, Monica Vitti.

I used to obsessively tear out the pages of my favorite fashion magazines to keep in what I like to call an “inspiration book” to help me put outfits together, get motivated to blog, or for that one day way way waaaay in the future when I’d dabble in my own desiging, but instead of collecting the stacks of paper in a super heavy binder, I’ve decided to post them for my readers. What do you think of Miranda’s shoot? Do you recognize these spots in Brooklyn?

Red Carpet Review: The 2011 Toronto Film Festival Featuring Angelina Jolie, Megan Fox, Freida Pinto, & More!

Tis the season for film festivals, which means that not only are we celebrating the latest slew of must-see major & independent films, but the stars are supporting their work with some fabulous fashions! At various events for the 2011 Toronto Film Festival, we saw many stylish cocktail & formal looks from some of our favorite Style Darlings!

Kate Mara looked radiant in a black overlay Christian Dior dress with nude pumps & a messy side braid.  This season’s it-girl Jessica Chastain accented her porcelain skin with a gold dress by Derek Lam & ankle-strap sandals by Tory BurchMarisa Tomei wore a geometric print dress by Proenza Schouler & carried a Stark clutch. My favorite part of this look is the halfway-to-the-knee strappy sandals. Evan Rachel Wood continued her androgynous menswear streak in a pinstripe suit by Dolce & Gabbana.

Long lost Megan Fox showed up in a red hot Thakoon ruched dress with leopard print Brian Atwood ankle-strap pumps & a gold David Webb ring. Freida Pinto brought the sparkle in a blush Valentino dress with Jimmy Choo sandals & a mirrored Roger Vivier clutch.  Last, but not the least, the festival’s best dressed star was Angelina Jolie who wore this black cowl Vivienne Westwood gown at the Moneyball premiere with a Louis Vuitton clutch & Stuart Weitzman satin shoes.
