Cover Craze: Behind-The-Scenes With Zöe Saldana For InStyle’s Annual Hair Issue!

Zöe Saldana has been an actress to watch over the last few years, especially with her starring roles in Avatar and Star Trek, & is slated for both highly anticipated sequels, as well as taking on the titular role in Nina, a biopic about singer Nina Simone. However, the Jersey girl is lending her stunning face to the cover of InStyle‘s annual Hair issue, in breath-taking looks by Dior, Balmain, Gucci, Givenchy by Riccardo Tisci, & Lanvin.

 “I like androgyny,” Saldana told the magazine, adding, “I don’t feel like myself when I’m looking pretty. But every now and then, maybe four or five times a year, I just want to be a girl and look like a cherry apple.” Also, she talks about her beauty secrets, including her at-home remedies for treating her hair, as well as her hair style inspirations like Halle Berry, Sissy Spacek, & even Brad Pitt!

I’ve been saving up my April magazines to bring with me to work & now that Spring Break is over, I’ve finally had the chance to take in the latest issue of Vogue, with the always lovely FLOTUS Michelle Obama on the cover. However, as a big fan of Alfred Hitchcock movies & Grace Kelly‘s timeless style, I was enchanted by the magazine’s reprise of the 1954 suspense thriller, Rear Window, starring The Great Gatsby‘s Tobey Maguire & supermodel Carolyn Murphy, with an appearance by Laurie Metcalf, taking over the film’s roles for a shoot by Peter Lindbergh. The shoot contains stunning looks by Dolce & Gabbana, Fred Leighton, Marc Jacobs, Oscar de la Renta, J. Crew, Michael Kors, Miu Miu, Hermès, Gucci, House of Lavande, & Rochas.

Rear Window is definitely in the air since this week’s episode of ABC’s Castle spoofed the Oscar-nominated film, so as soon as I saw the nine-page shoot, I knew I had to feature the retro images. Tobey’s Brooks Brothers pajamas are nearly spot-on to those worn famously by James Stewart‘s photojournalist character in the film.

If you followed the tabloid reports, then you know that 2012 was a pretty crazy year for actress / designer / celebrity mom Katie Holmes, however as the latest face to grace the cover of Allure for the April 2013 issue, she’s taken the time to talk about her beauty secrets (as the new face of Bobbi Brown Cosmetics), aging gracefully like her mother & grandmother before her, & what she hopes to pass on to her daughter, Suri.

This latest shoot, by photographer Tom Munro, offers a very sultry & summer-ready new look for Katie, especially with wetted tresses, swimwear duds, smoky eyes, & an extremely bronzed, all-over glow. Not to mention that the usually conservative Style Darling’s cover look alludes to nudity, but her wardrobe for the shoot includes items from Agent Provocateur, Jason Wu, & DKNY. She talks to the magazine about her recent Broadway appearance in Dead Accounts, as well as her hopes for a “peaceful” 2013 amid Hurricane Sandy & the tragic shooting in Connecticut late last year.

I know I’m looking forward to April for more than the fabulous spring fashions & big upcoming movies, but I have a lot of exciting professional changes ahead of me. However, there’s so much going on in terms of our favorite magazines & the big international headlines are looking more & more fabulous, guiding where fashion is headed as the weather begins to warm up. In this latest post for Cover Craze, I went all out with a total of 15 covers that I just couldn’t stop looking at & reading up on.

The biggest news in covers is that First Lady Michelle Obama returns to Vogue for the April 2013 issue in a sleek two-tone Reed Krakoff sheath dress, photographed by the always impressive Annie Leibovitz. In an interview with Jonathan Van Meter, FLOTUS discusses parenting, marriage, her duties as First Lady, as well as fashion. She shares with readers, “If you’re comfortable in your clothes it’s easy to connect with people & make them feel comfortable as well.”

On the cover of Lucky, two-time Emmy winner & star of Modern Family, Julie Bowen, looks like the modern & sexy cool mom that we all wish we had, wearing pieces from Tommy Hilfiger, Michael Stars, & Pandora. Inside the svelte blond is contemporary & chic in J.Crew, Juicy Couture, Jimmy Choo, & DKNY. Speaking of TV stars, Revenge actress Emily VanCamp looks smoldering in a cut-out Michael Kors dress on the cover of Marie Claire Australia, sharing the spotlight with her dashing male co-stars  Gabriel Mann (Nolan), Barry Sloane (Aiden), & Nick Wechsler (Jack).

Marie Claire shows The Incredible Burt Wonderstone actress Olivia Wilde in a sexy sheer blue dress, as she talks about her engagement to Saturday Night Live star Jason Sudekis. As for Marie Claire UK, Mila Kunis, star of Oz the Great & Powerful, talks about her breakout performance in Black Swan, upcoming Hollywood projects, & taking a break from back-to-back movies.

New Girl star Zooey Deschanel, who takes the cover of In Style in a stunning Carolina Herrera gown. Also featured in the issue are pieces by Oscar de la Renta, Bottega Veneta, Marc Jacobs, Balenciaga, Chanel, & Nicholas Kirkwood, as she talks about her love of all things nail art & being a role model for girls.

I featured Selena Gomez‘s breezy spring look for Harper’s Bazaar in my last Haute Headlines post, but what was awestruck by the young star’s shoot by Terry Richardson featuring red carpet looks by Akris, Dior, Calvin Klein, & Prada. The down-to-earth Texas native & star of Spring Breakers talks about her family traditions, stardom, & her new role as a single lady.

Elle unzips rapper / American Idol judge Nicki Minaj without the big neon hair or exaggerated eyelashes that she’s always famous for donning. Also, Elle UK pays homage to another star in music, Rihanna, who looks effortless in a checkered Louis Vuitton outfit (like from the collection we’ve seen on Kirsten Dunst & Kerry Washington). She talks about her future, family, & more from the pixie-cutted pop star.

Kim Kardashian is always in the news & while photogs are tracking her pregnancy style, you can see her pre-baby-bump curves on the cover of Cosmopolitan in a Sophia Loren-inspired look. Smash star Katharine McPhee look positively fresh-faced for front & back covers of Women’s Health. She models various different makeup looks including striking blue eyeliner, enhanced cheeks, & bold red lips. Oscar-winning actress Jennifer Lawrence is the focus of People Style Watch & for her stylish red carpet looks in Stella McCartney, Hugo, & Michael Kors. Also, the mag looks at her street style in Thakoon & Tory Burch, as well as her changing hairstyles for previous films like Silver Linings Playbook, The Hungry Games, & X-Men: First Class.

Lastly, we see country crooner Taylor Swift for Vanity Fair, talking about how she’s the target of constant jokes regarding her love life, including the jab that Tina Fey & Amy Poehler made during last month’s Golden Globes. A topless Kate Hudson let her natural beauty shine for Glamour, decked out in layers of Chanel necklaces. The mom of two talks about her romance with Muse frontman, motherhood in her thirties, & how she balances it all. I almost missed seeing Emily VanCamp‘s second April cover for Canada’s Fashion magazine, but I was glad to catch the former ballerina & leading lady for the Captain America sequel in this gorgeous snake-print dress & necklace, both by Gucci.

New mom Megan Fox takes on Marie Claire UK in a printed one-piece, opening up about her marriage, motherhood, & about her next career move.

I’ve been a subscriber to Allure magazine for a long time now & even though I don’t consider myself a beauty guru, I’ve learned a lot about makeup tricks, how to take care of your skin, & ways to improve your beauty regiment on a budget from the pages within. Just a few days ago I received the February 2013 issue of Allure with my favorite country-singing Style Darling on the cover, Carrie Underwood. I love that she’s always a lady & never tries to look like anything she’s not. In the pages of the magazine, she talks about how her look has evolved during her career, her self-confidence, & how she keeps up with a busy touring schedule.

My favorite magazine of all, the one that I set time aside for to look through, is InStyle, which is currently celebrating the accomplishments of actress / entrepreneur / author Jessica Alba, who’s founded an eco-friendly children’s company, Honest Company, as well as published her first book, The Honest Life, which teaches readers how to fill their home with eco-friendly & safe products.

There are so many great covers coming out for the fabulous February issues of my favorite magazines & I’m definitely looking forward to flipping through the magazine’s pages to learn about what’s going on in the glamorous celebrity lives of these multi-faceted actresses & Style Darlings. 

First up, Jennifer Lawrence shares her million dollar smile for Vanity Fair‘s cover, including some nuggets of her always charming humor in the featured article.  Zooey Deschanel doesn’t compromise her adorkable look for Glamour in a befitting Prabal Gurung sweetheart dress in aqua.  Perks of Being a Wallflower actress Emma Watson reveals her post Harry Potter plans & how she never compromises her work ethic in an edgy rock star shorts look for Marie Claire UK. Jennifer Lopez gets fierce in Fendi for a silvery, sexy look for next month’s Harper’s Bazaar. As we anticipate the return of Smash, former American Idol singer Katharine McPhee gets a bold striped look for Lucky.  Hollywood it-girl, Jessica Chastain, makes her mark on InStyle UK‘s cover in a feminine Christian Dior look.  Lastly, I don’t normally follow teen magazines, but The Carries Diaries is about to premiere on January 14th & the show’s star, AnnaSophia Robb, is featured on Teen Vogue, looking every bit a young Carrie Bradshaw.

Gwen Stefani for Vogue January 2013While biding my time during the holidays, stuck in bed, sick as a pampered pooch, I spent some time flipping through the January 2013 issue of Vogue, with the always glamorous Gwen Stefani on the cover. Gwen has been one of my fashion idols for a long time, & I still remember hearing “Just A Girl” on the radio for the first hundred times back when I was in middle school.  Inside the magazine, you’ll find ridiculously fashionable shots of the No Doubt frontwoman, alongside her bandmates whose latest album, Push & Shove, is creating lots of buzz for the band’s long-awaited reunion.  Check out the video below to get a taste of Gwen’s history with the group & her hot looks for the new year, featuring designs by Alexander Wang & Saint Laurent by Hedi Slimane. Jessica Chastain has certainly been the it-girl of Hollywood this year, especially following her well-deserved Oscar nomination for her supporting role in The Help.  The redheaded beauty is featured on four covers for W magazine, showing just how it is that “art meets fashion”through the eyes of four very different & well-respected artists.  This list includes abstract expressionist George Condo, portraitist Rineke Dijkstra, painter Chantal Joffe, & collage artist Mickalene Thomas. Now that December has rolled around, all of my favorite magazines have started debuting their January 2013 covers, including the always fabulous Glamour magazine, featuring A-list actress Anne Hathaway, donning her now famous pixie cut, ultra lithe figure, & hard-to-miss newlywed glow.  The Les Miserables star plays with bright colors & hot pants for the magazine’s spread, sharing with readers her competitive nature, gorgeous honeymoon, & how she’s sworn off shopping for the rest of 2012.

Cover Craze: December Issue Risk-Takers & Style-Makers, Featuring Keira Knightley, Rihanna, Anne Hathaway, & More!

‘Tis the season to take your clothes off for a magazine.. well, not really, but that’s what Rihanna (in AllSaints) & Keira Knightley (in Chanel) have both done for the December 2012 issues of GQ & Allure, respectively.  I love the idea of being confident in your body & loving your shape, however I’m not sure that’s the message that these two cover Style Darlings are sending, but I don’t publish the magazines. However, Catherine Zeta-Jones is keeping it classy for In Style‘s final issue of the year in a v-neck dress by Nina Ricci.

Also, I’m happy to share the latest from Vogue, featuring Les Miserables actress & recent Saturday Night Live host, Anne Hathaway who is looking every bit the movie star in Ralph Lauren, Taylor Swift making her 2nd appearance this month (see previous Cover Craze post) for Harper’s Bazaar & she’s talking about how hard it is to wear the same dress twice, & the always ladylike Jennifer Hudson, who’s appearing in the 2nd season of Smash, for Redbook. I’ve been posting a lot recently about the latest in magazine covers b/c they just keep getting better & better as the months go on.  I’m a former subscriber to W, but still love to check out what the high-fashion periodical is up to.  The magazine is celebrating its 40th anniversary & have shared the beautiful faces of Rooney Mara, Mia Wasikowska, Scarlett Johansson, & Keira Knightley on four different covers, representing each decade. Rooney is donning Prada for the 1970s, Mia looks neon in Balenciaga for the 1980s, Scarlett is goth in Dolce & Gabbana for the 1990s, & Keira looks polished & golden in Chanel for the 2000s.  Which cover is your favorite? Cover Craze: Six Fabulous Mags Featuring The Faces Of Emma Watson, Britney Spears, Gwen Stefani, & More!

I couldn’t decide which October 2012 issue to feature in my next Cover Craze post, so I searched the web for a bunch of covers, which helps cover a lot of bases. Anyway, I’ve just about finished filing through the heaps of pages from the ripe September issues & can now start sorting through what October has to bring, especially considering the fact that we’re nearing the official start of fall this weekend! I’ve selected only 6 October issues so far b/c this is what I’ve received in the mail & I’m still super anxious to see what’s going on with In Style, Shape, Harper’s Bazaar, & Allure.

Be sure to check out Nashville star Hayden Panettiere on the cover of Women’s Health, where she talks about how she’s dealt with the rise to fame from child star to leading lady.  Also, get your girl friends together for a gossip session when you’re looking at the very umm… informative issue of Cosmopolitan with New Girl actress Zooey Deschanel on the cover, looking all sorts of adorkable, as always. I’m loving Emma Watson‘s grown out pixie cut right now & that she’s taking some very youthful, but elegant fashion risks in her article for Glamour.  Did anyone see her on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon promoting her new movie, Perks of Being a Wallflower? Adorbs!

For the season fashion mag reader, Keira Knightley continues her reign as period drama princess while talking about her latest film, Anna Karenina, as the role of a lifetime for Vogue.  Gwen Stefani proves that she’s still got it for Marie Claire, baring her abs (two babies later!) while No Doubt preps for their long-awaited comeback. Check out the music video for their latest single “Settle Down” here! Lastly, Britney Spears puts her pout to good use with the help of some stylists for Elle, showing off a combination of some pop / rock star style & talks about her latest gig as a judge on X-Factor alongside British grump, Simon Cowell.  Which magazine cover is your favorite? Cover Craze: Victoria Beckham Is Glamour’s Sept Guest Editor!

Yes, this is my 2nd Spice Girls-related post in a day, however I’m writing about the always stunning Victoria Beckham who acted as guest editor for the September issue of Glamour.  I was so excited to flip through the pages & find out VB’s picks, style secrets, as well as read about her thoughts on what’s going on in fashion for the upcoming fall season.

Aside from the fabulous shots of the former singer wearing duds by Chanel, Dolce & Gabbana, Lanvin, Giuseppe Zanotti, & of course Victoria Beckham, I’m loving what she’s offered to readers, including hair ideas featuring Lily Collins, the best way to experiment with makeup, & how to wear brights for the upcoming season.  She’s had a very big hand in putting together the hefty 328-page issue alongside editor-in-chief Cindi Leive.
