1/28/11 Darling of the Day: Kate Mara in a Kenneth Cole LBD!

Kate Mara may be an actress that you don’t know right away, but if you’ve had your eye on all the latest fashion magazines, the sister of the upcoming The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo star Rooney Mara, is about the blow up on the Hollywood radar.  She co-starred alongside James Franco in the Oscar-nominated 127 Hours.  Not to mention, having a small role in Iron Man 2, as well as Entourage, Kate is the newest redhead in town.  She didn’t just show up on the scene though, as this look is from 2008.  She’s wearing a Kenneth Cole tank dress with a leather motorcycle jacket, a red clutch, & embellished peep toe pumps.  She combines casual & chic, a touch of femininity & some roughness.  And she’s no stranger to fashion!  This look can easily be replicated to bring new life to your basic LBD.

1/27/2011 Darling of the Day: Eva Longoria at this year’s Golden Globes!

Eva Longoria was my favorite at this year’s Golden Globe awards, hands down (Olivia Wilde was a close second)!.  She went old school Hollywood in this all-black Zac Posen cap sleeve dress with an embellished belt.  For a petite actress, the dress really captures her curvy figure, and she doesn’t get swallowed up by the solid color or length.  Wearing Neil Lane jewels and accessorizing with a black rectangular clutch, she stole the show for the black dresses.  Part of what’s so spectacular about this look is that even though she had trouble walking in it during the ceremony, she showed off her natural confidence as her best asset.  I was so happy to see this design knocked off at an affordable price & it would be my first pick to try on for an upcoming formal event.

1/26/11 Darling of the Day: Reese Witherspoon in Colbalt!

Reese Witherspoon recently showed up in this gorgeous cobalt blue Jason Wu cascade creation to help Avon celebrate its 125th anniversary.  The spokeswoman & Oscar-winning actress relies on her confident smile & some basic black pumps to show off her look.  She proves that sometimes that’s all you need- stick to something classic & timeless without any fuss.  Since my search only really included a dress & pair of shoes, I just so happened to stumble on two dresses that fall into this color family that are really similar & super affordable if you’re a fan of Reese‘s professional, yet elegant look. I choose these pumps that have a little touch of animal print to them for some extra flair at such an awesome price from Payless

Reese does love wearing blue, as you can see here at last year’s Vital Voices 2010 Global Leadership Awards in Washington D.C., here taking a stroll in Beverly Hills, & here at last year’s Golden Globe awards in Giorgio Armani Prive.  For more on Reese’s style, check out this link & here too!  Happy Styling!

The $100 Challenge: A True Style Darling Uniform!

Somehow or another, the circle of style keeps coming back my way, which makes me very happy.  I recently received word from a very fashionable college friend that the very chic & spirited retailer Mod Cloth features a dress that’s called none other than “Style Darling.”  So here we are on a very snowy blog day that requires a venture into some familiar territory, The $100 Challenge

While we’re in the middle of a week of gray skies, I wanted to show this dress, staying true to its sweetness, but also add some surprises.  Given the price of this dress, at a cool $61.99, wouldn’t it be something to make an entire stylish outfit with the remaining $38?  I love how the simplicity of this dress reminds me of something vintage with a touch of Charlotte York, but the bright tights have a little essence of Carrie Bradshaw.  A touch of polka dots makes for a playful collar, the cinched waist allows for a belt with a little gold- just enough metallic so as not to clash with classic silver bangles.  A simple foldover coin purse turns into a chic daytime clutch & you can’t forget about those cut-out shooties that are perfect for any time of year.  They’re just enough modern for this mod look!  This look can be switched up with knee boots & bright leather belt, or a sweet cardigan & cute ballet flats.  Thanks Michelle & Happy Styling!

1/25/11 Darling of the Day: Mandy Moore’s LBD & Red Heels!

So this is day two of Mandy Moore‘s fabulous fashion choices.  She brings glamour & simplicity together in a little black dress with an adorable sweetheart neckline.  While at an event for her new movie Tangled, she shows off her newlywed glow & chooses a statement necklace & gorgeous red satin platforms for some old school charm.  Her song for the film, “I See The Light,” was just nominated for an Academy Award, which surely means that the multi-talented entertainer will be hitting Oscar’s red carpet next month.  In my search for fabulous look-alikes for today’s darling, these suede bow pumps kept popping into my head, so I just had to post them.  For that price, you could even invest the black pair.  Not to mention, Mandy’s elegant & understated stud earrings are easy to affordably find & here, I’ve offered up a set of nine pairs.  If you’re like me with multiple ear piercings, this is probably the chicest way to do up your lobes without looking too overaccessorized.

If Mandy keeps this up, I’m sure we’ll be seeing her again tomorrow!  Happy Styling!

1/24/2011 Darling of the Day: Mandy Moore!

Mandy Moore is one of my red carpet favorites.  She never dresses to upstage anyone, she’s very natural & seems like the kind of girl I’d want to go shopping with!  Here she is last month at the Los Angeles premiere of Frankie & Alice, in a dark grey three-quarter sleeve dress (maybe a sweater dress?).  She’s adorned in jewels by Miriam Haskell & Nicky Hilton.  She dons dark tights & black booties to complete her winter in California look.  The classic blend of dark colors is both sexy & understated.  Her statement necklace does all the work for her, drawing attention to her soft makeup & curls.

If you’re a big fan of Mandy’s red carpet looks, take a clicky here & here.  Another way to wear this look can be with textured tights and knee-high boots, or even with a blazer, belt, & drop earrings.   If you’re loving grey sweater dresses, take a look at this pick & this one.  Happy Styling!

1/23/11 Darling of the Day: Taylor Swift’s gown at last year’s Grammy’s!

Taylor Swift‘s look from last year’s Grammy awards put her at the top of best dressed lists all over the fashion media world.  Not only does she look youthful, but she takes a risk with a modern neckline in this Kaufman Franco navy blue sparkled gown.  While most of us are bigs fans of her  music, she’s a big fan of the designer who she’s worn at several different red carpet events during the last year.  She sticks to her signature curly updo, which frames her face so nicely.  In addition to this deep sapphire stunner, she’s decked out in jewels by Ofira & Lorraine Schwartz.  Take a look at these less expensive investment pieces if you’re seeking to pay homage to the singer’s unforgettable look.  The gown is perfect for any time of year & can be accessorized with heavy drop earrings, while showing off some tasteful cleavage.

Part of what’s so unique to her red carpet choices, aside from looking like a star, she’s a very accessible figure in fashion & age-approriate role model for her younger fans.  She looks both sexy & sophisticated, putting others who try too hard to shame.  If you’re a Taylor style junkie, check out this link to Glamour‘s guide & People Style Watch‘s profile of the versatile entertainer.  Happy Styling!

1/22/11 Darling of the Day: Natalie Portman at the Golden Globes!

At this year’s Golden Globes ceremony, Natalie Portman was the talk of the town as a favorite.  Her performance in Black Swan has earned her some serious Oscar buzz & her red carpet styles while promoting the film have offered up some glamorous fashoin cred.  After recently announcing her engagement & pregnancy, everyone in the world wanted a picture of the actress showing off her baby bump.  Here in a sweetly youthful, yet classic pink Viktor & Rolf strapless dress, a single red rose detail is carefully placed at the bustline.  Natalie glows like a joyful & elegant mother-to-be.  She’s decked out in a delicate string necklace & stud earrings, sporting a red Dior cluth, & hot red platform sandals.

Luxury Look-Alikes for Less: Fabulous Lanvin Flats!

For a fresh take on evening or to dress up a casual day look, why not go for a jeweled ballet flat? While checking out this delightfully informative & stylish post by Marie Claire, I was inspired to reinvent a previous post about these gorgeously feminine Lanvin navy flats.  They are quite the hefty investment at $760.00, but with a little online surfing, there’s a great variety out there for inexpensive look-alikes.  Instead of knee-high boots with dark tights & a sweater dress, or ankle boots with skinny jeans & a flyaway knit, this embellished option will turn heads.

Some of my favorite sources for great, fun flats include Payless, Charlotte Russe, Wet Seal, & Forever 21.  Which stores do you love to shop in for flats?  Which brand is your go-to when it comes to comfortable shoes?  Any comments, questions, or suggestions are always welcome!  Happy Styling!

1/21/11 Darling of the Day: Zoe Saldana!

I went a little further back in the style logs to find today’s look.  While it’s still winter out & definitely mighty cold in New York, I was looking for a go-to comfortable, yet stylish ensemble.  Zoe Saldana wore this equestrian-inspired look to a Pepsi event in Los Angeles, just about this time last year.  This three-piece look includes a black turtleneck, fitted leggings, & knee-high boots, creating a lean & stylish way to wear your basics.  Perhaps you could subtitute a red turtleneck or maybe jeggings to add some dimension, but Zoe’s all-black look brings that LBD glamour to daytime.

To recreate this very basic look, my only advice would be to match up your blacks.  Sometimes, I’ve found, that some blacks look a little more gray, while others that may be washed out could appear green. To make your turtleneck look less frompy, make sure it hits right at your hips (if you have Zoe’s shape) & scrunch up the sleeves at your elbows.

Here are a few suggested accesssories, if you’re looking to jazz up a minimal look like this, but keep in mind that carefully picking out one item to be the star of your look is essential!

For more stylish looks by the Avatar actress, here & here.  AND… if an outfit like this really tickles your style pickle, but you’re more of a risk-taker with your leggings, check out these by William Rast, these by BCBGeneration, & these by Miley Cyrus & Max Azria!  Happy Styling!

1/20/11 Darling of the Day: Sofia Vergara at the Golden Globes!

Not only did Sofia Vergara wow on the red carpet in this corseted Vera Wang honeysuckle strapless gown, but hers is among the first to be knocked off (from what I’ve found). The actress was nominated for her hit comedy Modern Family & although she went home empty-handed, she sparkled throughout the night in dazzling jewels by David Webb.  This is the perfect dress for any curvy woman.  The black sash belt creates a waste & accents the inner va-va-va-voom vixen!

A little extra frosting never hurt a Style Darling.  It would definitely enhance this glamorous Hollywood homage.  Although drop chandelier earrings were big during last year’s awards season, some looks just can’t do without them.  Stack on some glistening bangles & a big cocktail ring, but let your decolletage do all the work, otherwise you’ll look over-accessorized.

1/19/11 Darling of the Day: Cate Blanchett in Menswear!

Talk about sexy in menswear!  Although Cate Blanchett can sometimes be mistaken for an androgynous male alter ego (I’m Not There anyone?), she’s certainly one of the most versatile & respected actresses of today with a killer sense of style.

At a recent red carpet event, she wears a Dries van Noten pantsuit in classic black & white, but with white trousers & a black jacket.  How daring is she for winter?  With a hint of a peep toe & pink lips, she puts fashionistas half her age to shame!  A sharp look like this needs no other accessory (well, maybe a pair of studs doesn’t hurt!) than some attitude & confidence!

For more on Cate’s one-of-a-kind style, click here.

QUICK NOTE: I’ve become quite blog savvy in the last few days, what with inspiration from my trip to Italy thus making me a more ambitious writer & lover of style, so I’ve added a bunch of new features to my blogs, starting with this one.  If you grace your cursor over the image, you’ll see where the item is from & how much it costs, saving a great deal of text to what I hope is a more professional looking article.

While I continue to focus on celebrity looks, I will also endeavor to provide more style details about this history on the red carpet & so forth.  Any comments, questions, or suggestions, send them my way!  Happy Styling!

1/17/2011 Darling of the Day: Emmanuelle Chriqui!

Entourage starlet Emmanuelle Chriqui rang in 2011 with some basic black & a splash of sparkle.  She’s wearing a Bird by Juicy Couture sleeveless blouse with skinny Habitual Denim leggings and platform booties.  She kept her accessories simply chic with bangles & drop earrings.  I choose a tank & a bib necklace to create the same effect as Emmanuelle’s top, which is a quick fix to dress up any basic. These boots are more ornate than the pictured pair, but they’re by Christian Siriano (yes, Project Runway winner) & they’re fabulous!  Also, they’re available at Payless, so you can’t go wrong with that!

Red Carpet Review: 2011 Golden Globe Awards!

What better way to return to the blogging circuit than with a Red Carpet Review for this year’s Golden Globe Awards?  There were so many delicious trends that I couldn’t nail which one was my favorite since black & green are both my favorite colors.  There were splashes of blush & rose, shimmering metallics, blues & reds, funky risk-takers, long sleeves & ruffles… where to begin.

Since Natalie Portman, winner for her role in Black Swan, was THE actress everyone has been talking about this season, let’s go with the pinks… Here she is wearing a pink strapless Viktor & Rolf rose embellished gown.  Also, Lea Michele wears a pink one-shoulder Oscar de la Renta ruffled gown.  Claire Danes sticks to one of her favorites with a neon Calvin Klein collection halter gown. Emma Stone went a backless peachy sherbert-hued Calvin Klein collection column dress. Julianna Margulies went with two-tones in a pink & black strapless vintage YSL strapless number.  Megan Fox flaunts in a custom-designed pale pink Giorgio Armani slitted gown.  Sandra Bullock shows off some sparkled in a rosy, intricately beaded Jenny Peckham design.

Neutrals were all the rage, spanning from nudes to ambers in prints, chiffon, sparkles, & sleek numbers. Anne Hathaway dazzles in an amber open back shimmering Giorgio Armani Prive long-sleeved gown. Leighton Meester shows off the long-sleeved trend in a nude Burberry long-sleeved printed gown. Carrie Underwood glows in a Badgley Mischka quartz sequin strapless fishtail sweetheart gown. Scarlett Johansson shimmers in an Old Hollywood plunging blush Elie Saab dress. Heather Morris is sleek in a neutral shimmering gown by Lorena Sarbu. Julie Bowen loves her ruffles in a Tadashi Shoji appliqué gown. Dianna Agron looks like a princess in a blush silk chiffon J. Mendel strapless beaded gown. Sarah Hyland is warm in a Max Azria cafe au lait crystal embellished sweetheart gown.

Green was a surprising choice for some of this year’s nominees and presenters, but the deep regal and bold hue stood out on the red carpet in long-sleeved, one-shoulder, and strapless numbers. Catherine Zeta-Jones exudes elegance in a forest green textured dress by Monique Lhuillier. Mila Kunis is statuesque in an emerald one-shoulder gown by Vera Wang. Elisabeth Moss looks radiant in a hunter green Donna Karan strapless design. Angelina Jolie steals the green trend with a shimmering emerald green long-sleeved Versace gown.

Blue wasn’t the most popular color of the night, but here are three stunning looks in different shades of the color, which are timeless and chic. Amy Adams is gorgeous in a strapless teal blue Marchesa with lasercut detailing & a scalloped bodice. Jane Krakowski glows with maternal joy in a cornflower lace-trimmed Badgley Mischka one-shoulder gown. Mandy Moore is Grecian-inspired in a blue Monique Lhuillier gown.

While we’re talking about solid colors, those basics are effortless to pull off, but here we have three looks in reds & orange that lit up again a glamorous Hollywood red carpet. Christina Hendricks is sexy in a red ruffled one-shoulder Romona Keveza gown. Sofia Vergara channels her inner vixen in a reverse corseted Vera Wang. January Jones wears a custom colored red plunging fringed Versace gown. Kyra Sedgwick stands out in a bright mango Emilio Pucci silk chiffon gown.

You can’t have an awards show without some shimmer. At any age, in any style, shimmer is always a go-to choice for such a fabulous event like the Golden Globes. Screen legend Jane Fonda shines in a George Hobieka sharp-shouldered long-sleeved black embellished gown. Olivia Wilde wows like a princess in a chocolate ombre sequined Marchesa gown. Winner Melissa Leo keeps it simple but elegant in a black shimmering -Lora- gown. Amber Riley goes gunmetal in a figure flattering belted sequined Oliver Tolentino one-shoulder gown. Jessalyn Gilsig sparkles in an eggplant jacquard David Meister strapless gown.

My favorite of the night, if I had to choose, would have to be the black gowns. Black proves time & time again to be not just the stand-by, but the effortless classic that we all know & love. Julia Stiles ruffles up in a black mermaid Romona Keveza tulle one-shoulder gown. Eva Longoria (in my favorite look of the night overall) brings new meaning to simple in a black cap sleeved Zac Posen dress with an embellished belt. Jayma Mays turns back time in a sparkly black art deco Alberta Ferretti dress. Halle Berry proves that age ain’t nothing but a number in a black bustier Nina Ricci mini/overlay dress.

Where there are dark dresses, there will be lighter dresses. These stars turned to whites, creams, & pearl hues to show off their Hollywood style. Nicole Kidman stands tall in a cream belted column gown by Prada. Jennifer Lopez contrasts her honey glow with a draped white Zuhair Murad gown. Hailee Stienfeld looks youthful & age appropriate in a Prabul Gurung halter. Jennifer Love Hewitt shimmers in a pale blue Romona Keveza ruffled & bejeweled gown. Gia Mantegna, a.k.a. Miss Golden Globe, debuts in a silver floral appliqué gown with a black sash.

And last but not least, we have an ode to the risk-takers. With beads, flowers, ruffles, & disco, there will always be the ones who stay true to their style with someone fabulous & risky. Christina Aguilera pays homage to her inner burlesque gal in a sheer black beaded Zuhair Murad sweetheart gown. Michelle Williams is sunny in a daisy-printed Valentino gown. Nominee Jennifer Lawrence makes her mark in a swirling asymmetrical Louis Vuitton dress. Heidi Klum models a 70’s inspired Marc Jacob’s printed halter gown.

We still have the SAGs, Oscars, & Grammys coming up, so stay tuned for some more exciting Hollywood style!  Happy Styling!

Red Carpet Review: 2010 Emmy Awards, Featuring Claire Danes, Heidi Klum, Kim Kardashian, & More!

It was obvious that the small screen stars were bringing the larger than life glamour to the red carpet for Sunday’s 62nd Emmy Awards.  All the leading ladies of television were following the trends of black, white, navy, & one-shoulders.  Let’s just start with my absolute favorite of the night. Instantly, I knew that this would be a crowd-pleaser, guaranteed to be published in fashion magazines across the world. Claire Danes, pictured below, in a shimmering Giorgio Armani Prive strapless mermaid dress.  Already it is listed on InStyle‘s Look of the Day.

Surely, Monday night’s presentation of E!‘s Fashion Police will agree with me.  Regretfully, I didn’t get a chance to see the beautiful & talented Claire in the HBO movie Temple Grandin, for which she was nominated, but as soon as I saw this dress, I knew she was going to win for Best Lead Actress in a TV Movie.  Just like when Charlize Theron wore her gold body-hugging Gucci gown to the 2004 Oscars, winning for her role in Monster, & Sandra Bullock wore her gold / silver Marchesa dress to this year’s Oscars, winning for her role in The Blind Side.  A gold dress is a winner’s dress! As for the black trend, I was surprised b/c not many stars take the tricky color under consideration.  Of course, black done the right way is slimming, but for such an elegant affair, to risk losing some of its detail & beauty in photographs is where black goes wrong sometimes.  Anyway, take a look here at Julianna Margulies in L’Wren Scott, Heidi Klum in Marchesa, Eva Longoria-Parker in Robert Rodriguez, Julia Louis Dreyfus in Narciso Rodriguez, & Kelly Osbourne in Tony Ward Couture:

I guess you can’t have black dresses without the white ones & there was no shortage of that at the Emmy’s also.  White was a favorite among celebrities with figure flattering designs, metallic embellishments, & gorgeous hair. Here we have the white selection with Rose Byrne in Gucci, Kim Kardashian in Marchesa, Julie Benz in Pamella Roland Resort 2010, Brooke Burke, & Amber Riley:

An equally regal & stunning choice was navy on the red carpet.  Lea Michele told Ryan Seacrest that she hadn’t worn blue lately & it reminded her of the summer midnight sky.  The romantically decadent color was found in all shapes with dramatic ruffles, ruching, & Grecian draping.  My favorite picks for navy are Lea Michele in Oscar de la Renta, Jayma Mays in Burberry Prorsum, Julie Bowen in J. Mendel, Padma Lakshmi in Marchesa, Edie Falco, & Connie Britton:

Lastly, a trend that’s been all over the runways & red carpets for a few years now that’s always a flattering choice is the one-shoulder look.  The celebrities who embraced this were Emily Blunt in Christian Dior, Jane Lynch in Ali Rahimi, Emily Deschanel in Max Azria Atelier, Nina Dobrev in Zuhair Murad, Elisabeth Moss in Donna Karan, & Cheryl Hines in Zac Posen:

Although I didn’t mention this in my intro, I’d like to point out the risk-takers, in my opinion, who both rocked their looks & maybe didn’t succeed as they’d hoped, but still, they deserve some praise.  I’m not saying that I don’t like these looks, but for me, they qualify as risk-takers.  Whether they were experimenting with lace, beads, prints, shape, or hemline, they stole the attention on the red carpet for just a little bit longer than the rest. Check out Diana Agron in Carolina Herrera, Tina Fey in Oscar de la Renta, Jane Krakowski in Escada, January Jones in Atelier Versace, Rutina Wesley, Sofia Vergara in Carolina Herrera, Jewel in Zuhair Murad, Kristen Wiig, & Maria Menounos in Ralph & Russo:

My predictions on the gowns that will be most knocked off are: Claire Danes’ Armani Prive, January Jones’ Atelier Versace, Kim Kardashian’s Marchesa, Emily Deschanel’s Max Azria Atelier, Heidi Klum’s Marchesa, & Eva Longoria’s Robert Rodriguez.  Also, my only gripe with the whole evening was the absence of past favorites like the cast of Grey’s Anatomy & Desperate Housewives.  Stars like Sandra Oh, Katherine Heigl (well, not anymore), & Ellen Pompeo, as well as Felicity Huffman, Marcia Cross, & Teri Hatcher were always interesting to watch on the red carpet, but alas, a new generation of Gleeks, reality show stars, & vampires have invaded the scene.  Happy Styling!

Fashion Flashback: Marilyn Monroe & A Casual Look!

Since I’ve recently finished reading Blonde: A Novel by Joyce Carol Oates, Marilyn Monroe has been on my mind. Not only am I intrigued by her iconic status as a movie star, but also how influential her style still is today. Young starlets today continue to channel Marilyn’s curly blonde locks & sexy pin-up silhouettes on the red carpet. As Marilyn’s life was riddled with personal demons & rocky relationships, her life was tragically cut short & Hollywood lost one of its shining stars. We have preserved images of the forever-young beauty to inspire us for evening looks, weekends in the country, & daytime. Marilyn’s richly porcelain skin glistened against sexy whites & rich creams. Her voluptuous curves screamed sex appeal & lush femininity in sweetheart necklines & pencil dresses. Her blend of All-American & sultry radiated in dark denim & belted outfits with heels.  Here’s an effortless three-piece look that the misunderstood comedienne pulls off in true Hollywood style:

While this is a black & white image, here’s something understated that I found to represent Marilyn’s minimal off-camera style:

Top (American Apparel), Pants (Forever 21), & Shoes (DSW).

Keep an eye out for more blogs on Marilyn’s timeless style, as well as flashbacks of Audrey Hepburn, Elizabeth Taylor, Vivien Leigh, Jean Harlow, & many more!  Happy Styling!
