Inside A Style Blogger’s Closet: Busy Work Day Look, Mixing Structure, Texture, & Pattern!

Some might say that I get a little overdressed for my office job, that will remain nameless, but I think of it as a chance everyday to explore my professional attire & get multiple uses out of clothing that can be worn on casual days too!

On a not-so-special Tuesday, I put together this outfit b/c I was finally ready to rip off the price tag from the skirt, which I bought back in July (with the purchase of this skirt).  There are a few tiered layers to the skirt by Worthington from JC Penney & it is lined underneath, making it a not-so-summer-ready skirt.  However, as the seasons have been changing, I broke out some of my heavier pieces & saw that my $4.97 (yes, that’s how much I got the skirt for!) was going to waste since I hadn’t worn it yet.  According to the original tag, the skirt was first marked up to $60.00, which seems like much too much. Not to mention when I first bought the skirt, it was nug & now that I’m down a total of 12lbs for the 2011 calendar year, it sits just where its supposed to!

Since the skirt plays with three-dimensional structure, as you can see by the tiers, I broke out my asymmetrical black tee from New York & Company, which I’m pretty sure that I bought for under $10 (with the help of one of my favorite Style Darlings, Laurie).  The belt ($16.99) was a purchase earlier in the summer & polka-dotted tights were from last year, both from Target.  I know there’s a lot going on in the pattern & shape of the skirt, but I think when you have something as bold as this, it’s okay to put another pattern with it.  The skirt has a pointillism-inspired look, so the polka dots aren’t too far off.  Plus, they’re small enough not to take away from the overall look.  And who doesn’t love a good textured tight?

In addition, as a loyal Target shopper, I picked up the flyaway cardigan ($19.99) after urging my bestie Rosie (see the blog I dedicated to her here) to buy one. I don’t know why I didn’t hop on that right away since I’ve been wearing the cotton cardigan several times throughout the season now.

I don’t remember where I got the necklace, but I’d take a guess at somewhere like Mandee, Wet Seal, or Forever 21 since I don’t usually spend a lot on my fashion jewelry.  Of course, I can’t forget the shoes… I have these in a beige / gold also!  I love the four-inch heel & the silver lining around the cut-outs.  They lasted me throughout my eight-hour work day & are just so comfortable, but these are no longer available @Payless, since they were from (about) two seasons ago.  Unless it’s a shoe style emergency, I never buy anything from Payless without a coupon or when they’re having a BOGO 50% off sale & neither should you!

As always, I’m happy to share my style stories, now that I’m finally getting pictures up here on Style Darling.  I even told a customer who came into the office today how much my skirt cost when she remarked on how well-dressed I was & she snickered at me, “You know, you shouldn’t tell people that,” referring to the cheap bargain in which I so proudly announced.  Of course, there’s nothing wrong with a great deal, but it is nice to feel like you look like you’re wearing luxury pieces, especially when I’ve become invested in all the pieces that express my style to a tee!

Quickie Darling Deal & Steal: Take A Stylish Walk On The Wild Side @Cache!

I’ve never actually shopped @Cache, but when I received an email from the store about their 60% off clearance sale, I just had to check it out.  I got really excited to find animal-inspired pieces like the dress ($159.00) that looks flattering to all shapes.  It’s just the kind of print that I was referring to in my previous post about what to wear with the lace peep toes!

Next, the snake print cami ($39.00) would really wow underneath a boyfriend blazer with skinny jeans & red heels, or wear it with a cardigan & pencil skirt to make it more of a work-appropriate shell under basics.

The silk shorts ($59.00) remind me of something Rachel Bilson’s character would wear on Hart of Dixie, but these are easily fall-ready if paired with black tights, a mock turtleneck & some ankle booties.  My favorite of all is the tiered skirt ($49.00), which is just enough flirty & feminine for my style.  It’s classy enough to wear with your favorite button down blouse or sexy enough to go with the highest platforms in your closet!

When you look at the prices here, you might be thinking that I’ve forgotten my style-on-a-budget rule, but if you check out the website, you can get an addition 60% off, so the dress which was originally marked at $168.00 & is on sale for $159.00, then becomes $63.60 in your shopping cart after the 60% off!  Oh the power of bargains!  I should also mention that this is an end-of-the-season clearance sale so not all sizes are available.  I wanted to share the news on the great sale so that my readers can benefit! Happy Styling!

Luxury Look-Alikes for Less: Lace Peep Toes Inspired by Lea Michele & Zoe Saldana in Christian Louboutin!

In cleaning out my stacks of magazine clippings, I was very inspired by the adorable Christian Louboutin lace & leopard heels, which are no longer available.  I always remembered Zoe Saldana wearing them at last year’s MTV Movie Awards & Lea Michele modeling them with a gorgeous mini Marchesa dress in an issue of 2010’s In Style

I was doing some clicking around Shop Style & nothing makes me happier than looking through the rows of evening shoes.  I came across these 2 Lips Too peep toe heels ($49.95) in black, ivory, & purple @DSW.  I love the details in the lace, feather, & jewel embellishment.  It makes for the perfect finishing touch to any ladylike look. These were unintentional finds that reminded me of the dainty & ladylike Louboutins.  Even though they don’t have that animal-inspired touch, any of these shoes could be paired with a sexy leopard dress.

Quickie Darling Deal & Steal: The Latest Sale Apparel Under $30 @G By Guess!

I recently discovered the online site, G by Guess, a sub-brand of Guess, featuring very stylish apparel & accessories. I clicked through their sale items & found some very fashionable pieces marked down to prices under $30.00!  I always say that the beginning of a season is the best time to shop past-season pieces.  Here’s a perfect example of that!

I love the slinky one-shoulder dress ($22.48) in white, which is reduced in price from $49.50, but it’s only available online in XL. White is a tricky color to pull off if you have curves, but the flattering cut & with some carefully placed accessories like a metallic belt or a leather jacket, this could be a really hot piece to wear for a night out! Or, even a romper for fall can work! The chambray romper ($22.48) is perfect for a look with tights, ankle boots, & an oversized blazer if you want to make a playful daytime outfit.  Replace the built-in belt with something textured in croc or with grommets to create more dimension to this go-to summer piece.

The cargo ruffle jacket ($24.98) is great to complete a look consisting of dark denim jeans, a graphic tee, & pointy toe heels.  It’s a little bit urban, yet still offers a flattering cinch at the waist for feminine dresses.  Most of us can agree that bootcut jeans ($27.48) flatter nearly all shapes.  They’re the best casual & cool way of dressing down a sparkly top, & looking edgy in a masculine vest.

As for tops, I found these two which I thought were so cute & at a great price.  The printed top ($14.98) makes for a colorful pairing against leather leggings & a fitted jacket, or can be worn for day under a chunky knit & denim pencil skirt.  The plaid v-neck top ($14.98) shows a colorful pattern in multi / black, as well as a light purple.  It’s a fun alternative to the traditional plaid button-down for fall & also would pair nicely with something cordouroy… OR perhaps the green cargo pants ($19.98)?  I love that they’re a little bit utilitarian, yet still polished enough to wear with heels. On the website, they’re only available in size 24, but for those of you who are looking for a bottom option other than the easy go-to black trousers, grab them while you can!

Silver Screen Style: Miss Piggy Goes Glam for In Style!

To mark the excitement of Style Darling’s 300th post, I’m recycling some style news, but it’s still important news! Thanks to my editor over @Movie Buzzers, I got an exclusive heads up about a very special fashion spread that I’m so excited to cross-blog!

With all the news surrounding the long-awaited new movie, The Muppets, Miss Piggy is making her comeback in a big way!  In the November issue of In Style, featuring Gwen Stefani on the cover, the beloved puppet siren puts all previous high-fashion centerfolds to shame with looks by designers like a feathered flapper dress by Jason Wu, a romantic LWD (little white dress) by Parabal Gurung, and many more!

It’s been a whole twelve years since we saw the Muppet crew on the big screen, but Miss Piggy is making every effort to steal the show, especially after an impressive 35 years in the entertainment business.  In the magazine, she discusses her relationship with Kermit, her fashion sense, what it was like to film with her old friends, and exactly what she thinks about her co-stars Jason Segel and Amy Adams. Not to mention that all of the looks that the famous pig models were custom-made for the diva, including strappy leopard pumps by Brian Atwood, gold-plated jewelry by Philip Crangi for Giles & Brother, a floral belted Suno dress, and sweet Opening Ceremony halter dress with ankle strap heels.

You can expect to see the movie in theaters on November 23rd and check out Movie Buzzers’ previous articles about the latest trailer and video, a parody trailer, and news on the movie’s soundtrack featuring OKGO, Weezer, and many more! Also, check back with Movie Buzzers at the end of the year since I’m sure Miss Piggy’s on screen style will put The Muppets on my Top 10 Most Stylish Movies of 2011 list!

Inside A Style Blogger’s Closet: How I Styled A Summer Dress ($8.74) For Fall!

I took a recent trip to Target, just to return something & pick up some tortilla wraps, but of course I was swayed to check out the clearance section in the women’s clothing department.  Despite my protest against buying yet another dress since I clearly have no closet space for it, the $8.74 price tag made all the difference when I saw the Converse One ‘Adna’ Dress ($34.99 online).  Not to mention, that the only two dresses on the rack were in a Medium, so I didn’t think it would fit.  But then again, I did recently lose some weight, so I ducked into the fitting room to try it on. Now, this is me, at home with my new dress friend, smiling like it’s Christmas day!

I bought the wide stretch belt by Minicci ($12.99) a while back from Payless, of course with a coupon when it was on sale for $7.99. Also, the crocodile tights ($9.80) were another recent coupon purchase from Kohl’s by Simply Vera Vera Wang. I got 20% off just for being a cardholder!

The cardigan is a last season clearance purchase from Old Navy (I’m sure it was under $12).  Since the dress is pretty lightweight, the heaviness of the knit cardigan is a perfect match to add some texture & make it fall-ready! My staple sunburst necklace comes from Park Lane Jewelry, in which I received at a discounted price since I reaped the benefits of hosting a jewelry party two summers ago.

I bet you’re all wondering about the shoes.. They’re from Payless by Lela Rose.  I bought them about two winters ago, probably for around $38.00, but I’m sure that there was a BOGO 50% off deal in there somewhere!  I’m a big fan of black & cream, so this is a perfect uniform for me this fall.

I’m especially proud of the closeup on the headband since I made it myself, with a basic fabric-wrapped headband from a dollar store, as well as ribbons & lace from stores like Michael’s, Walmart, & Joann’s Fabrics & Craft Stores. I love all the different details in this look, knowing that it’s not too busy or bulky.

What do you think of my first official outfit posting?  All together it probably cost just over $100, but all of it can be mixed & matched with different outfits.  I can’t wait to see how this dress looks next summer with some wedges & an updo!  If you like looks that can be switched up b/w seasons, check out The $100 Challenge! Happy Styling!

Inside A Style Blogger’s Closet: Where Style Meets Darling!

I’ve spent a great deal of time the last 2 weeks shopping & preparing my closet for fall-ready fashions, but nothing makes me happier than documenting this trial of trends. I did a serious workout this Sunday doing the great closet switch, which included all my bags, shoes, dresses, & other everyday apparel from the spring / summer now tucked in whatever storage space I have & in its place are the loads of fall / winter glam with which I am obsessed.

Of course this was no shallow feat of materialism, this required a great deal of soul-searching via style!  I thought it would have to be a full weekend process, but my motivation was high & level of organization was even higher, so I banged it out without tribulation! I have a limited space to work with & I’m happy to share what I’ve got!

One day I’ll have a spacious walk-in or a better organizer, but I have my shoeboxes labelled, tops color-coordinated, dresses & skirts separated by texture & length.  You see all those shoeboxes?  Well, they’re 99% from Payless & I love the sturdiness of the Lela Rose boxes sold @Payless.

My adventure did go beyond the closet as I reorganized by color, the slew of hand-made headbands that I try to wear regularly.  I have them also organized by color, but as you can see from the clothing above & headbands below, I love my black!  One of these days I’ll get my Etsy shop running (making Stacey of EtsyBrook very happy) & then you can get your hands on those bands too!

Fashion Flashback: Grace Kelly- The Iconic Oscar Winner & Elegant Star of ‘Rear Window!’

For lack of style news to talk about today (it’s been a rough week), I thought I’d post a little something that I found on YouTube.  This video isn’t even a minute long, but shows (in black & white) Grace Kelly accepting her Oscar for Best Actress in The Country Girl. The American Princess of Monaco hit it big as an actress in the 1950s, but left her career for royal & family life. Check out the quick view of her pale blue Edith Head gown.  Her signature white gloves & classic style are what makes her a timeless icon of style.

Also, I love the Alfred Hitchcock movie Rear Window.  There’s something about it that I haven’t been able to shake since I saw it for the first time this summer.  It would make a really fantastic play (if anyone wants to try & write it with me!).  However, part of what I love about it, besides the story & cinematography of a small apartment complex is the one & only Grace Kelly, who stars with James Stewart in the thriller.  She’s every bit of glamorous with an ease & effortlessness that’s hard to come by now.  So take a look a revamped trailer for the movie & get a good look at Grace’s flawless costumes which make the movie all the more worth seeing!

The Stylish Five: Killer Heels From GOjane ($20 & Under)!

I feel like it’s been a while since I focused on shoes.  Part of what I love about shoes is that they always make your outfit look good!  I’m about to do my big seasonal closet switch, where I’ll rediscover some “old sole” friends who I haven’t seen since the end of last winter. I’m most excited about doing this b/c perhaps I may be able to make room for some more new friends if I make a few bags of clothes & shoes for donations.

I recently received an email from GOjane that shared news of their latest sale- footwear marked down up to 67% off!  That’s a whole lot of savings right there!  I love this site b/c it various designs of shoes for every style.  You can get girly with bows, walk fierce with strappy sandals, make a statement in peep toes, & the list goes on!  Here I’ve picked some of my favorite for The Stylish Five, all under $20!

First we have the strappy side floral print pump ($19.95) in orange, originally priced at $26.95.  They’re flashy enough to bring out the wow factor in a pair of high waist trouser jeans & a 70s inspired knotted blouse.  The color & print may throw off some shoppers, but it’s a pair of shoes unlike anything else that you’ll see on the street.  If you’re not an orange gal, they’re also available in blue too! Next is my favorite pair of the bunch, in dark green the pleated bow front pump ($15.95).  They have a staggering 5.25″ heel, but make for the perfect finish to a black sheath dress with gold deco jewelry.  The color is so on trend for fall & the price is perfectly reduced from $27.95!

If you’re into texture & detail like me, then the ruffled velvet heel ($14.95) in sand is a must-have!  They offer just enough coverage that can be worn with tights & a pair of dressy shorts this fall.  This shoe selection is very strap-happy, especially with the cross strap leatherette platforms ($13.95) which lend a little bit of an urban feel to something soft like a tiered chiffon mini dress or skinny pants & a metallic top.  They’re marked down a whopping 37% from their original price of $22.20 & can be worn throughout the year! Lastly, I picked the espadrille strap slingback platform ($12.95) that can transform a day look into something evening-ready.  The 4.75″ heel will elongate your legline & give any sweater dress & leggings look a whole new life!

I know this season is all about boots, but you can help reboot next year’s wardrobe with a few discounted finds right now!  What do you think of these styles? What’s your best shoe deal story? Are you a peep toe gal or strappy sandal Style Darling? Check out previous posts in The Stylish Five, featuring cold weather accessories & affordable finds from H&M! Quickie Darling Deal & Steal: Sweet Tunic Sweater From Forever 21 & Marked Down Boots From Payless!

Sweaters have been on my mind, if you haven’t noticed!  I’ve been searching all over to get my hands on a sweater dress, or at least a tunic sweater to wear with my leggings & new flat boots.  During a spur-of-the-moment trip to Forever 21, I came across this super adorable, semi-preppy looking knit striped tunic sweater in black & white ($13.50).  The price was perfect & I just had to try it on. All my friends know that I’m very pro black & white & when I found that it fit & would look perfect with my leggings, I knew it was a must-have!

The tunic also comes in charcoal & black, red & black, chocolate & khaki, & heather gray & black, in sizes Small, Medium, & Large. I know Forever 21 is not a store for everybody.  I think the brand needs to expand on their available of sizes for us Style Darlings with curves, but when you find something like this, it’s so hard to pass up.

Even though Payless doesn’t have a big BOGO 50% off sale now, many of their latest boot styles are marked down.  These ‘Sayde Anne’ short shaft boots ($19.99) were originally priced for $34.99.  I bought them during the BOGO 60% off sale on Columbus Day, but went back to get an adjustment since there was about a $15.00 price difference.  Since I didn’t necessarily need the boots right away, I could’ve just returned them at the store if they wouldn’t do an adjustment & then bought them online with FREE SHIPPING to any Payless store location.  Always gotta find a way to beat the system all in the name of style!

I’m planning on wearing this tunic with basic black leggings (which I recently blogged about also), the gray flat boots, & some kind of wide belt to show off my shape.  I’ve been invited to a friend’s house for a “comfy snuggle night,” where we’ll enjoy some karaoke, a movie, appetizers, & desserts.  When it comes to comfy, I automatically think of something with leggings that won’t make me feel so constricted. If & when I’m able to post pictures of myself in the actual outfits that I’m talking so much about, this will make for a great post in The $100 Challenge b/c the pieces shown above & my leggings for $8.00 from Target only total just under $42!

Take a click on over to the store’s wesbite to check out their latest BOGO FREE sale on tops, sweaters, skirts, stocking, & menswear!  Would you wear this sweater tunic?  Do you shop @Forever 21?  Happy Styling!

Basics for a Bargain / 10/14/11 Darling of the Day: Miranda Kerr in Leather Bottoms & Casual T-Shirts!

Victoria’s Secret model Miranda Kerr has been spied out & about in Paris during Fashion Week wearing cotton t-shirts & leather bottoms. Of course this isn’t a look that just anyone can pull off, but there are affordable options if you’re daring enough to take the plunge!

On the Victoria’s Secret store site, I found the same oversized tee ($39.50) pictured, modeled by Miranda herself.  Also, the other t-shirt ($8.50) from Old Navy is also sold in five other basic colors.

The bottom half is all about leather, but in our case, faux leather is the best option.  This includes leatherette shorts ($19.80) from Forever 21 & the (minus the) leather seamed mini skirt ($59.90) from Express.

To help elongate the legline, Miranda goes with closed toe pumps with either texture or a pop of color.  The fuchsia platform pumps ($24.70) from GOjane & ‘Shieryl’ pointed toe pumps ($33.74) from ALDO are the perfect way to add some sass & femininity to such a minimalst look.

For one final touch, a pair of black shades ($5.80) easily makes this look day-ready & all the more fabulous!  Pieces like leather skirts or shorts are the best way to change up the way you’re putting together an outfit.  It can be downplayed with an effortless t-shirt & still look like it was something all your own.

If you’re a leather fan, check out a previous Basics for a Bargain post featuring leather pants inspired by Gwyneth Paltrow & Beyonce!  Also, check out a Darling of the Day post, showing Miranda’s Parisian chic day look! Happy Styling!

10/13/11 Darling of the Day: Gwen Stefani’s Sleek Casual Stroll in London!

Gwen Stefani took a stroll around London looking beyond chic! She’s donning a white sleeveless top, skinny pants, movie star sunglasses, & classic peep toe pumps.  This look is so easy to recreate b/c it’s made from basic pieces that we all have.

I love the simplicity of a sleeveless white blouse & fitted black trousers.  Gwen always looks good in black & white, often sporting polka dots, houndstooth, or stripes, but this look is always elegant & very age appropriate for the forty-two year-old L’Oreal spokesmodel.

I found the cream crepe de chine shirt ($22.80) @Forever 21 & the pleated button front blouse ($29.90) from Avenue to help bring this look to life for Style Darlings of all sizes.  The slim crop pants ($49.95) from Gap come are available in size 00-20.

There are so many different black peep toe pumps out there, but I just love that GOjane layered patent peep toe platforms ($23.90) are a little more edgy than your average pair of heels.  Since the look is so minimal, a textured tote ($19.99) by Merona from Target is the perfect everyday accessory for a day-to-day basis.

To finish off the look, oversized round black sunglasses ($5.80), mixed chain necklaces ($8.80), & two-tone textured bangles ($12.60) are subtle ways to show off your style.  I know this look has inspired me to put together some classic pieces of my own for a polished go-to look.

Check out my previous Darling of the Day posts, featuring stars like Lea Michele, Rosie Huntington – Whiteley, & Jessica Biel. Also, if you love Gwen’s style, check out my post on last season’s L.A.M.B. collection! Happy Styling!

Quickie Darling Deal & Steal: Get Cozy & Comfy with Old Navy Sale Items!

A new Old Navy store recently opened just a few miles away, so I was super psyched to see that they had some pretty big sales going on!  I treated myself to some cold-weather favorites, but the prices in the store were actually much, much cheaper! This just goes to show that the online sales aren’t always the better deal.  You gotta do your style research!

There’s nothing that I love more than a cozy, but stylish top to pair with jeans & boots for a fall day.  Even though this past weekend was very summer-like in the 80s, I’m happy to say that I’m refreshing my fall / winter wardrobe on a budget.  I love the shawl collar cardigan ($34.00), also available in red.  You can layer it for much colder says over a button down shirt, or put it over a summer top with a denim skirt.  I did go home with the cropped fleece jacket ($20.00), but found that the charcoal was better suited for my style.  It’s the perfect way to complete your look without breaking out the down jacket when it’s really not too chilly out.

I know my friend Laurie would love the collared breezy blouse ($27.00) for its versatility & earth-tone.  It comes in growing green, frosty peach, black jack, & brown animal print in sizes XS – XXL.  It’s a stylish basic to go under a sweater vest, with wide leg trouser jeans, belted under a cardigan, or worn open with a graphic tee & skinny pants.

For something heavier, the cropped cowl neck sweater ($29.00) is just the piece to dress down leather leggings, brocade cigarette pants, or a tweed pencil skirt for weekend events or day gatherings.  If you’re just not ready for all that bulk, the dolman-sleeve cardigan ($25.00) is a smart way to dress up some basic slacks, or wear your sparkly flair at the office.

Lastly, I also found a home from the preppy ‘plumonade’ mini cable-knit v-neck sweater ($22.00), which is also available in black jack, bright white, baby spinach, crimson & clover, oatmeal heather, & medium heather gray.  It’s great for a pencil skirt & patent leather belt, or worn over a collared shirt for a job interview.

What are your favorite fall pieces?  Are you a loyal Old Navy shopper?  How much are you willing to invest in key seasonal pieces?  For more fall-ready finds, check out The Stylish Five‘s cold weather accessories, how to wear a turtleneck like a celebrity in Basics for a Bargain, & where to find the best flats, scarves, booties, tights, & belts in NYC Street Style! Runway Rundown: Rachel Zoe’s Stylish Spring 2012 Collection!

My favorite celebri-stylist Rachel Zoe just keeps getting more & more fabulous, especially with her upcoming Spring 2012 Collection, sold exclusively @Neiman Marcus. The fashionable force behind Anne Hathaway’s eight costume changes at this year’s Oscar ceremony is a workaholic, but is changing the face of fashion, one Style Darling at a time.  I told my readers about her debut collection back in February & now I’m super excited to share this sneak peak at the upcoming spring line.

My inspiration was Brigitte Bardot, early ‘70s, south of France, super glamorous but never trying too hard, never forced, always easy,” she revealed to In Style during a recent interview. The collection includes textured, whimsical maxi dresses, tailored suits, & retro separates that are so easy to mix up with modern pieces like dark denim jeans or one-shoulder tops.

Of course this collection is out of the average Style Darling’s budget, but it’s always a good idea to check out the latest styles that are making headlines in the industry.  I love the merlot-hued suit, especially with the cropped pants, which just scream for extra high pumps.  Speaking of accessories, you can check out all of Rachel’s glamorous shoes & handbags on the Neiman Marcus website, including all apparel, ranging in price $225.00 – $650.00.

For more on the style behind Rachel Zoe’s empire, check out The Zoe Report, Zoe Beautiful, & AccessZOEries on her official website.  Also, aring Tuesday nights on Bravo, you can check out her always-entertaining reality show, The Rachel Zoe Project. Happy Styling!

The Stylish Five: Cute Cold Weather Accessories ($25 & Under)!

Even though this weekend’s weather had me fooled into thinking that it was August, I’m loving all of the new cold weather accessories in stores.  Of course you have your choice of scarves, hats, gloves, & earmuffs, but these are some of my favorites to kick off the season! For $25 & under, take a look at some of the staple pieces that you can enjoy all season long!

For anyone looking to protect your hair from the upcoming harsh weather, take a cue from Parisian chic style with this beret ($5.95) from H&M.  It’s available in gray, camel, & black, which means that it’s the perfect neutral to any peacoat or trench.  Also at the Swedish retailer, you can have 100% leather gloves ($24.95) in rich golden brown or black.  They’re lined & available in sizes small to large.

However, if you’re a knit-lover, take a look at the playful, taupe cable knit pom pom scarf ($16.94) from Old Navy.  In case you want to show off a pop of color in your cold weather accessories, this heavy, snow-bunny-inspired scarf is also sold in red.  You can protect your arms with fingerless gloves ($7.80) in gray, oatmeal, or fuchsia, sold @Forever 21.  Your fingers will be available to text your friends or play your favorite tunes on your iPod!

Lastly, my favorite of all of these pieces is the knit flower headwrap ($7.99) in berry from Payless.  They’re currently marked down from $9.99 & also sold in black & white.  And now why I love this… in January, I spent some time in Florence, Italy.  Of course most people don’t vacation in the winter to winter locations, but I had the amazing opportunity to discover some incredible style, including a knit headwrap.  It always takes a year for the European trends to make their way stateside, so I’m ahead of the game! Now, headwraps are all the rage & this adorable one is a perfect example of that! In addition to taking place of a cute headband, I love that this causes a lot less static in my hair as opposed to a knit hat!

What cold weather accessories are you looking for this season?  What’s your staple piece that you can’t live without when the temperature drops?  Where do you shop for hats, scarves, & gloves?  Happy Styling?

Quickie Darling Deal & Steal: My Favorite New Belt & Flats from Charlotte Russe!

I know I posted a Quickie Darling Deal & Steal post yesterday about affordable leggings, but I was so excited to find these items this afternoon that I couldn’t help but repeat the category!  Don’t you love a great sale on this holiday weekend?

During a quickie trip to the mall on this sunny, summery Columbus Day, I stopped in @Charlotte Russe b/c at the entrance, there was a sign to text “78953” & you could get any number of discounts, including $5.00 off your purchase.  I was snooping around the store for some affordable finds & came across this lurex front belt ($9.50), which answers the question for me: Do I want to wear my gray belt? Or the black one?

Also, there was a wall of flats that had been recently marked down.  I’m always looking for a cute way to relieve my feet after a long day in heels, or a dressy way to keep my feet comfortable if I know that heels just aren’t an option (on those very rare occasions).  I love these pleated satin ballet flat ($10.00) in champagne, which were originally priced for $19.50.  I know they’ll be perfect as we get closer to the holidays & the satin fabric makes any casual look just a bit fancier & more feminine.

I continued to scour the store & picked out a beaded bracelet & matching necklace b/c select styles of jewelry were 2 for $10.  In addition, I picked up a few basic tanks for under $5.00  By the end of my shopping trip, I used my $5 off coupon code that I received via text, in addition to an extra 10% off on the non-sale items, for being a student & providing my student ID.

Have you found any killer style deals?  Where are your favorite places to shop for fun extras like these?  Happy Styling!

Quickie Darling Deal & Steal: My Favorite Leggings for $8 @Target!

I was recently in the market for some leggings, pre-emptively preparing for an upcoming trip to Italy.  I’m probably one of the last twenty-somethings on the planet to embrace leggings, but it was a hard battle since I’m an avid skirt/dress kind of Style Darling.  I mean, Charlotte York never wore leggings, with possibly the exception of that 80s flashback in the movie’s sequel.

I’d wear the leggings as the easiest-to-pack form of pajama bottoms & go-to legwear with a sweater dress & boots, making travel easier & more versatile.  I didn’t have very much success with jeggings (it’s totally my shape, but I’m really okay with this!).  Therefore, I was hoping that an all-black cotton legging would solve the problem that I was having with my thighs looking like two giant wads of sausages attached to my hips.  Anyway, since I was on the hunt, I found @Target a pair of long leggings ($8.00) by Mossimo Supply Co..  The price was too good to turn down!

After I found the comfort & movability in the leggings, I wanted to buy another pair or two as backup for when I go away since I’d rather keep one for sleeping in & another to wear out with a tunic top or long sweater.  I couldn’t find any more in the store in black (although they’re also available in heather gray), much to my dismay, but ventured onto the website & ordered the long pair.  If you’re into the capri-length leggings, they’re also $8.00, but what I would suggest if you’re seriously thinking about getting them, buy them one size bigger.  After all, Mossimo is a Juniors’ brand for the retail giant.

The website offers free shipping for purchases over $50.  I searched high & low for some extra little items like tights, socks, & underwear that could be necessities to help avoid paying the extra shipping cost; however, I found a darling black sweater dress which made my purchase over the required minimum for free shipping.  As it turns out, just like I thought, the dress just didn’t look quite right & I can return it to my local Target store, with receipt & all. I ended up saving myself the shipping cost & get back the $30+ amount which I laid out for a short amount of time on the unsuccessful dress.

Since I know that the Target in which I frequent is so local, I’m not wasting any gas to get there.  I was trying to avoid paying for a shipping & handling free, but end up saving that cash when I got for my weekly yogurt run.  I’ve since received the two pair of leggings & am overjoyed to start thinking about all the fabulous outfits that I can make with them… but I now just have to find the right pair of slouchy boots so that I can look chic while walking through the Gucci Museum in Florence in January.  I still can’t get over the fact that I was wearing (affordble & comfortable, yet low on the totem pole) sneakers from Payless when I visited the Salvatore Ferragamo museum when I was last in Florence.

Do you wear leggings?  If so, how do you like to wear them?  How many pairs do you own?  Where do you find the best leggings? Do you think the leggings trend is coming to an end? Happy Styling!

The $100 Challenge / 10/8/11 Darling of the Day: Lea Michele In An ASOS Mini Dress!

Lea Michele is by far the best dressed Gleek of them all- Dianna Agron is a close second.  What I love about Lea’s looks is that they’re unexpected, a little risky, & very natural on the young actress.

Here, she’s wearing a mini lace high neck cut-out top dress in navy by ASOS ($52.38).  Although it may seem like there’s part of the dress missing, especially considering that the model is wearing leggings, Lea pulls it off with to-die-for patent leather Brian Atwood ankle booties!

Just so you know, the Brian Atwood booties have a black leather look-alike pair, which is sold @Saks Fifth Avenue for $850.0o! However, the petite star who stands at 5’3″ (my height) looks lean & leggy with the four-inch heel.

Since there’s so much memorable detail in the lacey dress & contrasting edgy booties, she accessorizes her look with a cocktail ring by M.C.L. by Matthew Campbell Laurenza.  Consider that when your look consists of several details that offer a lot of dimension to the overall statement of your personality, keeping the extra, background pieces simple is always the best way to go!

The reason why I’ve cross-categorized this blog is b/c it just so happens to fall under the criteria of The $100 Challenge!  You can add Steve Madden ‘Menlo’ platform bootie ($39.94) from DSW, as well as the sparkling sunburst ring ($5.80) from Forever 21 to get a look that costs $98.12 before taxes!

I did recently feature Lea in a Darling of the Day post, wearing Jason Wu & Brian Atwood, but you can check out stars like Rosie Huntington – Whiteley & Jessica Biel sporting looks that are easily translatable to pieces that you may already own in your wardrobe!  Also, if you’re a bargain shopper, check out a comfy chic look & how to style your summer favorites for fall in The $100 Challenge!

The Stylish Five: New Arrivals @H&M ($25 & Under)!

Since I’m all about affordable style, H&M is one of my favorite places to shop when I’m looking for new items during the change of seasons that will last me a long time.  The Swedish retailer is nothing short of chic, especially when it comes to basics. With the exciting news of an upcoming designer collaboration with the one & only, Versace, I’ve been all over the store’s site, ready to give my entire wardrobe a makeover!

For this fall, if there are five items to check out from the new arrivals @H&M, the $25 & under picks that I’ve selected are can’t-miss finds!

To start off, the fitted leopard mini dress ($17.95) is perfect for calling on the inner wild child when wearing nude booties & a glittered clutch for a date, or pair it with leggings, slouchy boots, & a scarf & you’ll be ready for a day out & about with girlfriends! I love skirts, especially the checked button up skirt ($24.95) which is fun to wear with a cardigan & belt like pictured, or break out the textured tights, knee boots, & silk blouse for a feminine take on menswear inspiration. Also, the skirt is sold in sizes up to 16!

I’ve been on the hunt for a basic white blouse to wear with any bottom in my wardrobe & this tie-front blouse ($24.95) is just what I’m looking for, in a very vintage Marilyn Monroe kind of way.  I love that its pictured with shorts & tights, but would also look great with red jeans, a ruffled mini skirt, or liquid leggings.  This color block sweater ($24.95) first caught my eye as very mod, but  modern as well!  It’s available in two-tone purple, as well as solid aqua & solid white.  It’s a classic cut, flattering for any figure with skinny jeans or leggings & some long beads!

I also recently posted about the lovely Pippa Middleton’s red flats & then I found these red flats ($24.95) from H&M which I love LOVE love b/c of the faux croc textured.  You can also get them in black, which is office-friendly for any garments that you may have in tweed, windowpane, & houndstooth!

Basics for a Bargain: Dispell Those Turtleneck Myths with Inspiration from Claudia Schiffer, Keira Knightley, & More (Dedicated to Laurie)!

My dear friend Laurie, who I’ve dedicated a past blog to, has inspired this post with a question about the myth that turtlenecks = frompy.  However, here is the evidence that they’re not!  Of course I’m not a turtleneck-donning Style Darling myself, or anything with collars for that matter, but I can say that looking at the celebs below, there’s no way turtlenecks can be so wrong when they look so right- especially on my dear Laurie who always looks fashionable in a turtleneck.

Over the last few years, we’ve seen turtlenecks come back in style, in the most classic way, just like a good pair of trousers, dark denim jeans, a pencil skirt, & a button-down shirt. Jennifer Connelly layers her turtleneck with a blazer & pleated Balenciaga mini skirt & opaque tights.  Supermodel Claudia Schiffer makes a spring-like tunic fall-ready with a turtleneck, leggings, & heavy cardigan. Kristin Chenoweth looks super cozy in a furry sweater jacket, skinny jeans, & knee boots with her classic gray turtleneck underneath.  Reese Witherspoon multi-tasks in a black mock turtleneck, aviators, straight leg jeans, & embellished flats with a Rebecca Minkoff crossbody bag.  Amanda Seyfried covers up in the cold with a black turtleneck under a bright red romper dress for a TV appearance & matching red lips.  Keira Knightley looks like a modern-day Audrey Hepburn in a belted pencil dress & turtleneck ensemble with round toe Sergio Rossi pumps.  Disney darling Selena Gomez downplays her printed pants with a short-sleeved turtleneck & layered chains from LOFT.

And now the basic we’ve all been waiting for…. here are some turtlenecks, in stores now! @Old Navy, the ‘tropical storm’ turtleneck ($17.94) is available in five other colors & can be mixed & matched up with a skirt suit or puffer vest with white skinny jeans.  Each color is available in sizes XS – XXL for Style Darlings of all shapes! Try out some jewel tones & primary colors with the classic turtleneck sweater ($34.93) from The Limited, marked down from $49.90.  Take a skinny belt, like shown on the model, & add some modern edge to the underestimated basic piece that would look contemporary with classic stud earrings & bangles.  Style&co created this gray & black colorblock turtleneck ($21.98), available @Macy’s, also in black & red. It’s prefect for a pair of leather shorts & hoop earrings. Add some straight leg cigarette pants & platform boots to create an mod / equestrian look.

If you’re a mock turtleneck kind of gal, check out Target‘s short-sleeve mock in black which can help you recreate Keira’s look, or would be fabulous with a houndstooth pencil skirt for work! Also, this turtleneck reminds me of a Fashion Flashback post featuring Marilyn Monroe with white pants & bouncy blonde curls.

Work a built-in belt with a sweater turtleneck ($17.80) like this from Forever 21 for a denim skirt & boots when you grab some hot chocolate with your gal pals on weeknight.  Probably my favorite of all the turtlenecks is the shirred turtleneck in deep teal ($28.00) by Jennifer Lopez for Kohl’s.  Also available in heather gray & black, this top is marked down from $40.00!

For those of you who still need some extra convincing, celebrities like Zoe Saldana, Emma Roberts, Lake Bell, Beyonce, & Cameron Diaz show that covering up in a turtleneck dress can be just as sexy & polished like a cocktail dress on the red carpet.  Check out a previous Basics for a Bargain post, featuring sweater dresses to see stars like Heather Graham, Eva Mendes, & Nicole Richie sporting fall-ready turtleneck style sweater dresses without any worry about if it’s a do or don’t.

Turtlenecks have come a long way.  Stay away from anything too festive, adorned with holiday-themes, & you won’t look like a fuddy-duddy.  Look for a turtleneck in a strong solid color, or in a modern print. Remember: Since turtlenecks are a must-have basic, you’re setting up the foundation to a really fashionable ensemble that could be accented with with long necklaces, a vest, belted bootcut jeans, a leather corset, mini skirt, or figure-flattering pencil skirt.

Also, for a final persuasion to any nay-sayers, check out these stunning runway looks from Chanel, Proenza Schouler, Michael Kors, Valentino, Stella McCartney, & Donna Karan.

Do you have any style myths that you just can’t figure out?  I’d be happy to show off how some celebrity-inspiration can translate into an affordable look.  Do you have any turtleneck stories?  Laurie, I hope this blog does the trick! Happy Styling!

This is an emergency style post! I had the pleasure of finding out that the official trailer for My Week with Marilyn is out & ready for viewing!  The film stars two-time Oscar nominee Michelle Williams as the troubled starlet in London, who films The Prince & the Showgirl in 1957, opposite Sir Laurence Olivier (also movie’s director too!).

10/6/11 Darling of the Day: Rosie Huntington-Whiteley’s Isabel Marant Fur Vest, Burberry Aviators, & More Affordable Style!

What better way to start off the fall than with a fur vest?  AND whenever I talk about fur, it’s always faux fur!  As soon as I saw Rosie Huntington – Whiteley‘s look while strolling through Beverly Hills on In Style, I knew this was going to be a Darling of the Day post!

The Victoria’s Secret model sports a casual white tee under an Isabel Marant fur vest with skinny jeans, Burberry aviators, gray booties, & a tote by Alexander Wang.  This is the best sunny day look as the seasons are changing, mixing your favorite basic tee & clean skinny jeans with fall favorites like booties & a vest.

To get this look, take a top like the kiss tee ($24.50) from Victoria’s Secret, which can be paired with a leather mini skirt or cigarette pants with a bib necklace or hoop earrings.  Skinny crop jeans ($44.99) from Gap can easily go from day-to-night by switching up wedges with knee boots or a tunic top with a dolman blouse. @Forever 21, this very affordable vest ($37.80) is perfect to also make an LBD & gladiator sandals a little more edgy or with a maxi dress & cowboy boots!

As for my plus-size Style Darlings, check out the white slub tee ($16.99) from Dress Barn, Forever 21+ distressed skinny jeans ($24.80), & an I.N.C. sleeveless faux fur vest ($39.99) from Macy’s.

My favorite part of this whole look is the gray faux leather shooties ($29.00), which can be found at Old Navy, marked down from $32.94! They look just like a beloved pair that I bought from Payless a few winters ago!  Aviators are everywhere & the silver & black pair ($5.80) is cool, timeless, & sporty. As for a bag, @H&M, this spacious shoulder bag ($17.95) in rich golden brown is a functional & fashionable option to carry around all your favorite belongings.  It’s neutrality is what you need for a day-to-day basis & it’s the ultimate piece to rely on when jet-setting around the globe any time of the year!

All the pieces can be alternated with so many other excellent pieces in your wardrobe, so investing in skinny jeans, booties, & a vest like this makes for so many different looks!  For more on Rosie, check out Basics for a Bargain & Red Carpet Review.  Also, to get more dish on how to dress like a celebrity, check out previous Darling of the Day posts featuring Jessica Biel, Anna Paquin, & Kristen Stewart! If you don’t know who Pippa Middleton is, then you live under a very unfashionable rock!  I’ve been keeping up with her street style since she’s the most talked about British sister, making a major splash in the style blogosphere!  Not to mention that she very proudly demonstrates how to wear some of her favorite pieces over & over again, you know like the rest of us do! Case in point, these red ‘Hortense’ ballet flats by French Sole, which cost £104 (that’s Euros).  That’s an awful lot of money to spend on a pair on these flats, which are available in fifteen different colors & styles.  Imagine how many pairs of shoes you can buy for that much money!
