The $100 Challenge: Revamp Your Fall Wardrobe With Affordable Accessories!

Since I spend most of my week surrounded by the younger generation of trendsetters, I’ve found that there are still a careful few of college age who actually take the time to get dressed in the morning before heading to class… just a few. Working in the academic arena has forced me to look to my wardrobe & try & switch things up in a professional, but relatable way so that I’m seen as an authority figure, but also someone who the students would like to talk to. I’m excited to explore my wardrobe & find great fall pieces to make this semester a memorable & stylish one, but every now & again, I need to refresh some basics & go-to classics with that latest accessories, which is why I’m happy to share my newest post for The $100 Challenge!

For under $100 (before tax), I’ve selected these 8 accessories to try wearing for a number of occasions this season with favorites that are transitioning from the summer & stand-by items making a return now that the temps are lowering.  Every year, I’ll always be talking about patterned tights & since I’m always shopping on a budget, I manage to grab up a bunch of different styles to match with pencil skirts & sheath dresses.  Get a polished look with the sheer stripe patterned tight ($7.50) from Charlotte Russe, especially when worn with something frilly & feminine like a lace overlay pencil skirt.  Cinch in your waist with a fun animal print with the zebra-print faux-leather belts ($16.00) from Old Navy, which will look especially polished with a bold cardigan.  I love anything black & white, which is also why I’ve picked out Forever 21‘s fringed houndstooth scarf ($6.80) to tuck in your lightweight jacket for those windier fall mornings.  If it’s not needed around your neck, you can always transform your tote back by tieing ir around the straps or body of the bag.

I’ve been trying to expand my jewelry pieces, which is I was drawn to the lemon drop long earrings ($22.90) from The Limited, which look like neutral & luxe additions to any LBD look, or if you want to make a plaid shirt & skinny jeans appear less casual.  For simpler necklines, I love the idea of a collar necklace, but also, the Sonoma life + style gold tone multistrand necklace ($15.60) from Kohl’s punches up any basic with the metallic accents, instantly drawing all focus to your face.  The burnt gold tear drop bracelet ($10.90) from Windsor Store is a fun pop of color to wear with any three-quarter sleeve top, or contrast with another rich jewel tone ensemble.

Lastly, I love the affordable price & classic look of the Minicci capulet rhinestone sunglasses ($9.99) from Payless, especially if you’re trying to save on must-have items when the holiday season is just around the corner.  Not to mention that you’re going to need to hide those peep toe pumps on occasion & cover your toes with some allover argyle socks ($7.95) from Gap. What better way to show off your preppy side than with this menswear-inspired print that’ll work well with any trouser & button-down shirt look?

The total for this look comes to $97.64, which is pretty incredible considering the variety in which these pieces can be alternated all season long.  Are you a scarf-fiend? Do you love chunky jewelry or do you prefer dainty pieces? Are you drawn to particular prints or patterns for your accessories this fall? Happy Styling!

Fabulous In 4 Ways: A Metallic Faux Leather Pencil Skirt For The Ages From New York & Company!

I was so excited in August to share one of my newest categories, Fabulous in 4 Ways, especially since the debut post was dedicated to my good friend Laurie, as inspired by her fabulous lace-up knee boots from Victoria’s Secret!  Now, I’m talking about faux leather & pencil skirts, but before we dive into the outfits, I turned to some of my favorite celebrities to get some inspiration in how I would style such a classy & modern take on the figure flattering piece.

Kate Bosworth rocks a Proenza Schouler leather-trimmed pencil skirt at the brand’s New York boutique opening with a relaxed white blouse & strappy sandals.  The First Lady, Michelle Obama, wore a high-waist pencil skirt in navy with a cropped cardigan & purple top, while visiting a Wisconsin school.  Mad Men bombshell Christina Hendricks mixes her old school glamour with a Dolce & Gabbana blouse, red clutch, & classic black pencil skirt.

Total Recall star Kate Beckinsale plays with colorblocking with a chic H&M tank, Diane von Furstenberg turquoise skirt, & spiked neutral pumps.  Rashida Jones is polished & professional with a touch of menswear while making an appearance on Good Morning America, wearing a printed button down shirt & white pencil skirt.  Aussie starlet Cate Blanchett showed her support for Givenchy in a head-to-toe look with Roger Vivier heels.

Also, at Fashion Week for the upcoming Spring-Summer 2013 runway collections, the pencil silhouette was everywhere, as seen in Runway Rundown posts, including Dolce & Gabbana, Burberry Prorsum, Christopher Kane, & Oscar de la Renta.  Also, these pieces were shared by more fabulous designers like Nina Ricci, Tadashi Shoji, & Salvatore Ferragamo!

To recreate a pencil skirt look, I’ve selected the faux leather bronze pencil skirt ($59.95) in metallic bronze from New York & Company, which challenged me to find a way to wear this for work, day, date, & cocktail occasions.  If you want to get the most out of your wardrobe for the office, check out the zippered contrast sweater ($24.80) in black from Forever 21 with the short tab sleeves top ($24.80) in teal available @Windsor Store.  The colorblocking & relaxed details tone down the metallic texture of the skirt, especially when paired with Express‘ diamond texture body shaping full tights ($22.90) & suede cap toe chunky heels ($21.50) in black from GOjane.

The look to the right (above) is fun for a day with the girls or feeling like mixing it up because of the contrasting details in Lord & Taylor‘s CK JEANS cable-front cotton cardigan ($29.99) in black over the tab-sleeve plaid-chiffon shirts ($29.94) in black combo from Old Navy.  Of course affordable pieces like these can be reworked with skinny jeans or leggings & chunky accessories.  @Payless, I’ve found the Dexflex Maye strappy boot ($59.99) in black & Minicci micro fiber tights ($6.99) in burgundy to add some extra dimension while playing with trends this fall.

Depending on where you’re headed for a date, this kind of pencil skirt is perfect for an elegant & upscale look, without breaking the bank.  I’ve chosen pieces with luxe details to put this look together, including the Jennifer Lopez pleated mesh overlay tank ($19.80) in tuffet from Kohl’s & glitter lace almond tow pump ($38.50) in champagne from Charlotte Russe.  To complete the ladylike feel, I’ve added the round stone drop earrings ($13.60) @Cache & The Limited‘s zip around wallet ($29.90).

Don’t forget that pencil skirts are perfect for building a sexy cocktail look. Of course, a dress will save you lots of time, but to get the most out of your wardrobe, why not play with separates in unexpected ways with the snake-print tiered bustier ($88.00) in amethyst from White House Black Market, paired with the Emma WP platform pump ($39.99) from Bakers Shoes.  Also, I love Forever 21‘s looped drop earrings ($7.80), which look red carpet ready, especially with the Mossimo basket weave print clutch ($16.99) in black & white @Target.

How would you wear this pencil skirt? Are you following the metallics trend? What are your favorite work, day, date, & cocktail looks? Happy Styling!

9/29/2012 Darling Of The Day / The $100 Challenge: Olivia Wilde’s Little Black Dress Look For Under $100!

Actress Olivia Wilde is one of the most in-demand beauties hitting red carpets & every time she makes an appearance, the photogs emerge & fashion critics pay attention.  During a recent appearance on The Daily Show with Jon Stewart, the former House star dazzled in square neck black A.L.C. dress with Iwona Ludyga Design jewelry & red accented accessories.

Although I wasn’t able to recreate the exact little black dress, I’m crazy for this figure-flattering dress ($34.95) from H&M, which is also available in burgundy.

Luckily, I was able to find affordable accessories to bring this look together, including the metal trim waist belt ($4.80) from Forever 21, the Fioni glitz clutch ($16.99) from Payless, GOjane‘s low cut pumps ($23.80), & the dazzling Apt. 9 gold tone simulated crystal linear drop earrings ($13.00) from Kohl’s.

The total for this bargain look comes to $93.54, which fits perfectly for The $100 Challenge. For more Darling of the Day posts, check out other Olivias, including Olivia Palermo & Olivia Munn! Also, if you’re looking for more fabulous looks worn by Ms. Wilde, check out more images featuring maxi dresses, a Prada gallery, peplum hemlines, as well as her latest look in a Top 10 Celeb Sightings gallery! 9/26/2012 Darling Of The Day: Olivia Palermo- Casual Chic Is Layered With Luxury!

It’s been hard for me to decide which celeb look to feature, but I’ve been loving everything that I’ve seen reality star Olivia Palermo wearing, which is why I featured her twice in the last post for Top 10 Celeb Sightings, where she rocked some Burberry duds & an ethereal Valentino gown. However, when I spotted her latest layered look while shopping & hitting the streets, I knew that this spin on classic style would be perfect to share with readers. Naturally, I’m recreating this look for both women’s & plus sizes to enjoy, doing my best to find complimentary pieces since it’s such a versatile & anytime ensemble.

So to start, look to the left & you’ll find the pieces to create a curvy reimagining of this street chic outfit.  First, I headed to Forever 21, which helped me I find the plus size sequined yoke contrast top ($22.80). I loved the resembling details with the purple & black contrast in Olivia’s top, giving a blousy feel, as opposed to a heavy knit sweater.  Also, the rockstar jeggings ($28.00) in medium wash from Old Navy helped to complete the bottom half, especially when on a budget & they’re available in sizes 16-30.  However, it was hard to find a two-tone leather jacket with multiple textures, but pieces like leather should be an investment, one that will last for many years, thus paying you back, which is why I’m happy to share the DKNYC leather & ponte motorcycle jacket ($189.00) from Zappos.  This is a classic cut, adding an edgy feel to any feminine look.  Of course accessories can be found virtually anywhere, but I added New York & Company‘s ribbon bib necklace ($24.95), which is currently on sale for Buy One, Get One FREE.  In addition the square sunglasses ($3.80) from Forever 21, Kelsey Dagger ‘Charley’ pump ($59.95) available @DSW, & Jennifer Lopez gold-tone hammered button stud earrings ($12.00) from Kohl’s are the perfect finishing touches, playing off the different textures.

Now, for the look on the right, I like the refreshing hue of the August Silk round neck pullover ($24.99) from Loehmann’s, especially since it can be mixed with other office-friendly pieces like a pencil skirt or be worn with a sequin mini for a date.  Also, @Forever 21, I found the hooded moto jacket ($24.80) & braided collar necklace ($12.80), which only enhance the casualness of the whisker wash skinny jeans ($41.40) from GOjane.  Normally, I don’t recommend a light wash jean, but these pieces really add a modern feel to an 80’s-90’s looking wash.  Lastly, I added the posh Mossimo gradient smoked lens sunglasses ($16.99) from Target, must-have Charlotte Russe pointed toe gold pumps ($32.50), & Dana Buchman gold-tone texture button stud earrings ($14.00) from Kohl’s.

Which pieces are your favorite in recreating this look? Where would you wear this? Do you like Olivia’s choice of accessories? The Stylish Five: Last Day Of Summer Sale Items ($15.00 & Under)!

Today is officially the last day of summer & tomorrow starts the fall. I’ve probably never been so sad to see the summer end (even though I’m crazy for suede & booties right now). It was an especially lovely season, partly b/c I was a free bird all over Long Island & had a great time with my boyfriend & friends.  Of course, now that my birthday is over & I’m back to school (working for one & no longer a student!), I still can’t get those last-minute summer deals out of my mind.  I didn’t have to look very hard to find these five very stylish pieces to include for a special post, all for $15.00 or under!

First, the racerback rugby stripes tank ($1.99) from Forever 21 is perfect to wear still, but for fall, you have to keep in mind that fall is all about layering.  This bright pop of color can be worn under a button-down shirt & sweater vest or cardigan.  Of course, yellow isn’t necessarily the color of the season, but it’s still fun to add against something red or cobalt!  Also, even though here on the east cost, it’s getting too chilly even during the day for shorts, but if you’re headed on vacation soon or traveling south where the summer sun is still beaming, check out the patterned shorts ($15.00) from Old Navy that are available in dark tone chambray (pictured above), as well as navy stripe & green stripe.

I love checking out what’s going on @J.Crew, which is where I found the perfect-fit tee ($14.99) in light blade & deep turquoise, however you’ll also be able to score this tee is spice for $9.99.  These colors are fun to mix up by colorblocking with a pencil skirt, trousers, or leggings & some chunky, oversized accessories or printed scarves.  For those who love daring prints, check out the floral/houndstooth printed mirror t-shirt dress ($12.00) from Windsor Store, which is a mini that calls for opaque tights & a boyfriend blazer.  I’m not saying you have to hide your shape in this flattering frock, but another way to keep it seasonal & fresh is by adding a belt & a knit cardigan.

Lastly, I’m crazy for the American Eagle sparkling flip-flop ($6.00 – $9.99) from Payless.  This pewter hue is higher in price, but they’re available in eleven other colors to help fulfill all of your flip-flop needs, especially if you’re headed for a hot tub or looking to something with some sheen for next season! What are you shopping for on this last day of summer? Do you have a favorite store where you love to shop clearance? Happy Styling!

Splurge or Save… A Burgundy Blouse?

The color of the upcoming fall-winter season is burgundy & its related hues, including brick, deep red, maroon, oxblood, merlot, & so on. I have to say that this isn’t a color I wear often, but I can see the luxury in it, especially when it comes to classic & feminine pieces like a burgundy blouse. Lately, Style Darling has been all about what’s been going down at New York Fashion Week with manic posts under Runway Rundown, but if we’re going to look ahead, let’s talk about what we should be considering for updating our wardrobe this fall.  Even if you’re not looking to stay on-trend, the idea of a burgundy blouse is pretty timeless.  It will look lush & expensive against any black, gray, navy, cream, mustard (yes, I said mustard), or denim pieces that you already own & rely on for building your everday looks.  Keep with the jewel tones & add a splash of deep purple for some colorblocking!

I’ve found five similar blouses that fit the criteria for Splurge of Save?, ranging in price from nearly $400 to under $20.  Of course, when it comes to a blouse, you have to consider the care that you will take in cleaning it, if it’s hand wash or dry clean only, which will entail an extra cost & time spent going to & from a reliable dry cleaners. Also, let’s say that for the sake of variety, we’d be looking at wearing this blouse twice a month from September to April. That’s 8 months & 16 wears, which is how we’ll figure the always important CPW (cost per wear).

The most expensive, but perhaps my favorite of all these blouses is the Equipment Signature 2-pocket silk chiffon shirt ($398.38) from ASOS. The subtle polka dot print can also be mixed with other prints like a pinstripe pant or always fashionable houndstooth pencil skirt if you’re going for a real runway-inspired look.  At most, this comes to just under $25 per wear, which can always buy you a great lunch & dessert with a refreshing glass of wine when you’re out with the girls.  Next, the Joie ‘Marru’ pleated blouse ($198.00) @Neiman Marcus is a less conventional looking blouse, but the modern pleats down the front add texture to this flowy feminine piece.  Wearing this will cost you less than $13 each day, which doesn’t sound so bad, but for some, the sleeve-length may not be favorable.  This can always be remedied with a cool cardigan or heavy knit wrap sweater. ALso, keep in mind that light pieces like blouses can always soften up tough separates like a leather jacket!

Thirdly, the Calvin Klein roll sleeve shirt ($69.50) from Bloomingdale’s doesn’t necessarily fall under the blouse category, but if worn with the right separates, this shirt can be utilized for day or night, in the office or for a date.  The sporty sleeves are perfect for pairing with a menswear-inspired vest, but this can also be coordinated with faux leather leggings, tucked in with satin shorts & tights, or simply worn with distressed boyfriend jeans & flats.  Dress this up with an embellished cardigan & drop earrings, or keep it simple with a croc embossed belt & riding boots.  For just over $4 a day, this doesn’t seem like such a bad deal, but of course, every Style Darling knows to keep their budget in mind.

For those who love the retro look, consider the ‘Prepare to Bordeaux’ top ($49.99) from Mod Cloth, which recalls that sexy librarian / secretary vibe, while also donning an air of Old Hollywood.  With a metallic-accented brocade pencil skirt or sequined mini, this is perfect with a killer blazer or worn to show off the sheer sleeves.  Not to mention that the scarf-like knot at the neck draws attention to your face.  Not to keep getting too math-y, for just over $3 a day, this blouse is worth the investment.  Lastly, Forever 21‘s shirred high-low shirt ($19.80) is our least expensive blouse, costing barely $1.25 per wear & is also great for styling for day or night.  Take a cue from the pic above & try your favorite pair of colored jeans, or create a 70’s look with wide leg jeans & camel accessories.

Which blouse is your favorite? Are you getting into the burgundy trend? How would you style this look? What piece would you like to see next in Splurge or Save? Happy Styling! (Special thanks to graphic designer, Nino Vlacich <3, for his time & skills in creating the image above!)

Fabulous in 4 Ways: Over-The-Knee Boots From Victoria’s Secret (Dedicated To Laurie)!

Attention Style Darling Readers: We have a new category alert! Fabulous In 4 Ways is my latest in offering the best style advice that I can, while keeping a budget in mind. Of course, I’ve had this idea (taking one item & showing how it’s worn in 4 fabulous ways) for a while now, just sitting away & linkless on my categories page, but just recently, a good friend has come to me w/ a deal on a killer pair of over-the-knee boots, asking for help on how to wear them once the temperatures cool down & heavy knits emerge from the depths of our closets.  Said friend, Laurie (who I’ve dedicated a total of 4 blogs to now- Jordana Brewster’s style, how to wear turtlenecks, & the best day-to-night blazers) has challenged me in a very good & very stylish way. Let’s take a look…

As I usually do in my Basics for a Bargain posts, let’s start off with some celebrity inspiration to see how some of the most photographed & stylish stars interpret their over-the-knee boot looks. The City star / socialite Olivia Palermo looks Upper East Side chic with her navy suede boots & fur-lined jacket, mixing neutrals with a sweater tunic. Mom-on-the-go Kourtney Kardashian wears her boots with a flowy blouse under a menswear-inspired blazer & floppy hat, keeping accessories like her bag matching in texture with her footwear. Supermodel legend Claudia Schiffer goes casual in jeggings & a cobalt cable knit sweater with a coordinating bag for her tan suede over-the-knee boots. Former Spice Girl / designer Victoria Beckham keeps her polished posh persona in check with ultra tight leggings, a black top, & satin-trimmed blazer while traveling through Heathrow airport. Lastly, Project Runway host Heidi Klum offers an edgy approach to her leather Jimmy Choo over-the-knee boots by completing her look with a graphic tee & abstract print blazer.

The boots inspiring this post are the Colin Stuart over-the-knee boots ($94.00) from Victoria’s Secret, which are on sale for less than their original $118.00 price tag (pictured below, to the left).  These are fierce confections of footwear meant only for the confident Style Darling (for example: Laurie!).  Even though these may seem much pricier than your average pump &/or ankle bootie, I can’t emphasize enough that this is an investment piece, especially one that you can dare to wear from the beginning of fall, all the way to the end of the winter.  Since we’re talking boots, VS is currently having a 20% off sale on all Colin Stuart boots, which you can shop here.

However, let’s get down to business in putting together these outfits wth some of the celebrity inspiration seen above.  Typically when I see boots, I think of sweaters & leggings b/c they’re both just so comfy & very on-trend for effortless fall looks.  My first ensemble includes the asymmetric hem sweater ($59.90) from Express, which is available in orchid, black, grey, & blue.  The loose fit is perfect for recalling that 80s off-the-shoulder bulky sweater look, as well as hugging your curves to show off your legs.  Just so you know, Express is currently having a mix & match BOGO 50% off sale this Labor Day weekend, so if you really love the look pictured, then check out the short metal stick necklace ($44.90) to go with the sweater. I’ve selected Forever 21‘s pebbled pointe knit leggings ($17.80), which will add some texture & shine against the rich suede of the boots.  Of course, any solid legging will do, but if you’re going for something with a print, keep it subtle since you’re dealing with a sexy lace-up detail in the back of the boots.

My second outfit is perfect for an office environment where jeans are allowed.  The Faded Glory jeggings ($12.88) from Walmart are a steal & can work with so many other wardrobe staples all year long.  The colored denim trend is obviously not going away & pairing it with White House Black Market‘s tweed trophy jacket ($188.00) is a professional & elegant way to dress up denim.  When shopping @WHBM, of course the regular prices are on the high side, but if you sign up for their seasonal catalogues, you can get discount codes, as well as earn points for reductions on future purchases. I find that comes in handy around the holidays when in a pinch for a cute cocktail dress.  For an extra feminine splash, I’ve selected the graphic checkered strips tiered cotton tank ($39.99) from LOFT to add some dimension- which also just so happens to marked down another 30% at checkout.

Look #3 required a little more attention since I wanted to find pieces that would work for more than just the over-the-knee boots challenge.  I started with this streaky knit t-shirt dress ($39.99) from The Limited, which has been marked down 50% on the store’s website. With a solid sheath-like dress as this, I immediately thought of a belt & found this duo of ivory cheetah & glossy black skinny belts ($10.79) from Bluefly. To keep warm during the cooler fall days, I picked out the basic, yet affordable Style & Co. three-quarter ruched sleeve cardigan ($14.99) in black from Macy’s. If you’re headed out to happy hour with the girls or going from the office to an evening function, this look is perfect with the boots, especially when the Minicci scroll weave tights ($7.99) from Payless are hiding underneath your layers.

Lastly, the forth look is my favorite, but perhaps not too far of a departure from the previous blazer look above.  When I saw the Merona tailored blazer ($34.99) @Target, I immediately loved the idea of mixing the plaid with the laces, as well as navy & black, along with integrating the fall’s best new neutral deep red hue with New York & Company‘s satiny roll-tab shirt ($39.95). Of course you can complete the look with skinny pants, but Style & Co. skinny stretch jeggings ($36.75) from Macy’s looked too good to be true in a classic dark wash!

What do you think of these looks? Would you wear over-the-knee boots? If so, how would you style your look with them? What boots are you shopping for this fall? Happy Styling!

The Stylish Five: Feel Fabulous With Forever 21’s End Of The Season Sale ($15 & Under)!

Yes, I’m still talking about the great end of the season sales online to help Style Darlings complete their summer wardrobe with this latest installment of The Stylish Five! What better place to check up on than Forever 21, where their sale items & plus size sale items are crazy affordable right now! Of course, read b/w the lines to see that these are all final sale items! These are perfect from making the transition from day-at-the-beach to poolside-under-the-stars!

For my fuller figured Style Darlings, I love the colored denim shorts with belt ($10.99) in aqua & ombré fringe slub top ($8.99) in black since they can be mixed & matched with so many other staples including a striped tank, printed wedges, dark skinny jeans, & ballet flats.  I’m always a big fan of dresses, which is why I’ve picked out the smocked midi-length tube dress ($8.99) in green.  Not only is the price unbelievable, but the length is super cute for showing off your shoes & new Labor Day pedicure.

You can never go wrong with accessories & I love the striped canvas floppy hat ($8.99), very Jennifer Lopez.  It’s essential for any day activities if you’re looking to protect your beautiful face from the sun, as well as creating that retro look with a maxi dress & stacked bangles.  Not to mention the desert heart shoppers tote ($9.99) is plenty big for your next beach excursion.  The fun print is bold for running errands with your gal pals or simply ‘toting’ around your favorite items.

Be sure to check out yesterday’s post with items $15 & Under from J.Crew! Happy Styling!

The Stylish Five: Friday The 13th Deals ($13 & Under!)

Not only can we say TGIF today, but it is Friday, the 13th! So if you’re superstitious, good luck today! In celebration of the often down-on-your-luck lauded day, I’ve added a new post to The Stylish Five, including some stylish deals on items under $13.00.  Of course, with my arsenal of go-to stores, this wasn’t very hard. The hard part was narrowing down my picks to just five pieces!

@Forever 21, this perforated knit cardigan ($12.80) in yellow is perfect for throwing over your favorite summer dress when it starts to get cooler at night.  I love the lemon yellow hue which is perfect to pair with virtually any color under the sun, including tangerine, cornflower blue, slate, & fuchsia.  Next up is a stop @Old Navy for some bangle fun with the satin-covered bracelet ($6.47). The edgy accessory is available in black, orange, yellow, & blue.  Mix them together or wear them with an assortment of other bracelets to create a textured effect.  While we have jewelry on the brain, JCP‘s everyday deals include the Color Craze pink chandelier earrings ($3.00) which will make any maxi dress look all the more exotic or can very easily dress up a shorts romper.

Nothing says classic quite like a button down, & The Limited‘s Collins shirt ($12.99) makes a bold statement in cobalt, but since this is such a great deal, why not splurge on the grey & purple options too? Wear this tucked in with a pencil skirt & pumps or loose over some cropped jeans & wedges.  Lastly, I’ve been searching high & low for the perfect pair of purple flip-flops & I should’ve have known that the Lita flip-flops ($3.99) from Wet Seal would be the answer to my prayers.  These are perfect for any & every casual event, but if you’re looking for more color variety, have no fear b/c they’re also available in yellow, turquoise, & pink!

Which of these five picks is your favorite? What special Friday the 13th deals are you scouring the internet for? Happy Styling!

7/12/2012 Darling Of The Day / Basics For A Bargain: Anne Hathaway’s Cropped ‘Do, LBDs, & Audrey Hepburn Inspiration!

Anne Hathaway has hit the red carpet with a reinvented classic retro vibe, cad with her pixie cut (for Les Miserables), little black dresses, basic black shoes, & elegance pendant necklaces.  The Oscar-nominee is in full swing promoting her latest film, the major summer blockbuster The Dark Knight Rises. The Style Darling‘s looks are elegant, contemporary, youthful, & worth making her the Darling of the Day.

Since I couldn’t pick just one look that I loved, I decided to share the four most recent images of her Audrey Hepburn-inspired style.  Her short ‘do is perfectly understated while these leg-baring frocks reveal that the actress isn’t slowing down her glamour game just yet.  Included in these images are dresses by Dolce & Gabbana, Stella McCartney, & Givenchy, paired with Tory Burch ankle strap sandals.

Since there are so many fabulous details in the dresses above, I’ve found some affordable LBDs to help recreate Anne’s breathtaking noir turn.  First from Forever 21, we have the shawl collar surplice dress ($27.80) & the mesh yoke bodycon dress ($24.80), which is available in sizes XL – 3X. H&M has this belted dress ($34.95) which moves beautifully & can be dressed up with peep toes or worn casually with flats.  To show off your shape, I recommend the ponte knit sheath dress ($48.93) from Express.  If you’re looking to imitate the feel of Anne’s forth look above, head over to Lulu’s for the Motown black dress ($38.00). Lastly, since we are talking about one of the most sought after actresses in all the land, we need to step up our style game just a little & share the Jessica Howard sequin cap sleeve dress ($70.00) @JCP

Lastly, to help complete the look, I’ve searched high & low for some of the best accessories. This includes the Forever 21 oval locket necklace ($5.80) & floral pendant necklace ($1.50).  In addition, my shoe choices include the Brash Gemini flat ($26.99) from Payless (which I’ve previously featured in champagne), Charlotte Russe‘s fabric mouse ballet flat ($30.00), sueded ankle wrap pump ($35.50), & Michael Antonio Loveme patent pump ($40.00) @Zappos.

Which of Anne’s looks do you like the best? Would you ever rock a pixie cut? How do you feel about all the black-on-black? All comments & suggestions are always welcome, so please share! Check out more posts like this in Basics for a Bargain, Luxury Look-Alikes for Less, & Red Carpet Review! Happy Styling!

Basics For A Bargain: Maxi Dresses Inspired By Olivia Wilde, Lauren Conrad, Lily Collins, & More!

‘Tis the season for maxidresses, which will be staples in your warm weather wardrobe from now even until after Labor Day.  As you can see, there are plenty of celebrities wearing maxidresses in a bunch of different ways.  Belts, beads, heels, flats, & jackets are perfect for accessorizing these flowy floor-length frocks.  First we have Alessandra Ambrosio in a tiered maxidress with a Loewe bag, Beyonce in a printed maxidress with stilettos, Rachel Bilson in a Suno maxidress, & Lily Collins in a Peter Som maxidress.

Also, for some more celebrity-inspiration, there’s Lauren Conrad in a belted Heartloom maxidress, Olivia Wilde in a Yigal Azrouel maxidress, Emma Roberts in an Isabel Lu maxidress, & Nicole Richie in a floral printed maxidress. With all these celebrity images, you can see how a maxidress is perfect for a red carpet event, daytime luncheon, or summer date night.

I’ve searched high & low for the best & most affordable maxi dresses from my favorite stores to share with readers.  In an effort to offer up some variety, I’ve selected trends like colorblocking, animal print, ruffles, & chiffon, as well as patterns like stripes, paisley, & florals. These selections include the cheetah lace maxi dress ($28.99) @Charlotte Russe, the I Heart Ronson striped maxi dress ($32.00) from JC Penney, tube cup feather maxi dress ($29.50) from Wet Seal, paisley maxi dress ($50.00) from Dress Barn, New York & Company‘s floral ruffle maxi dress ($69.95), leopard maxi dress ($27.80) from Forever 21‘s Plus 21 collection, colorblock maxi dress ($25.00) from Target, & flounced racer back dress ($27.80) also from Forever 21.

The $100 Challenge: Two Stylish Spring Looks, Under $100 Each!

There’s just so much to be excited about this spring & I know I’ve yet to post a complete outfit look! I’m psyched to share these two spring-ready ensembles, which cost under $100 each, hence why I’m featuring them in The $100 Challenge! However, this is a first for the category since I’m sharing with readers a look for Style Darlings who wear regular sizes & plus sizes, which can usually be seen in Darling of the Day.  I’m always encouraging readers to embrace their shapes b/c no matter what you look like, you can always have amazing style!

Let’s start with the plus-size look, which consists of many items from Forever 21‘s Plus 21 line.  It’s affordable & plus-size friendly, featuring casual apparel, as well as dressy duds.  There, you can find the peacock feather print top ($14.80), fringe trim open cardigan ($24.80), sleeping teddy bear shopper tote ($1.50), lace web medallion earrings ($2.80), & night sky bangles ($4.80). I also included the Fantasy jegging capris ($29.99) from Dress Barn & American Eagle Miles espadrille wedges ($19.99) in white from Payless b/c they’re available in wide width for those of you who are troubled by narrow-fitting shoes.  The grand total for this adorable casual & chic look is $98.68!

As for the look on the right, I also did some digging around @Forever 21 & found the striped rose tunic ($17.80) & frayed stripes scarf ($6.80). Then @Old Navy, I choose the crossbody saddle purse ($11.99) & satin covered bracelets ($10.50). To complete the looks, I found the Mossimo Supply Co. capri leggings ($8.00) from Target, Jennifer Lopez silver tone hoop drop earrings ($13.50) from Kohl’s, & Ciao Bella Ballad foldable flat ($19.94) from DSW. The total for this look is $99.03!

I love that both of these looks include pieces that can be dressed in so many different ways with items that we already own in our closet.  try the capris with a three-quarter sleeve button down & some ballet flats.  Of how about the crossbody bag & bangles with printed shorts romper? Oh the possibilities are endless! Which items are your favorites? How would you style these tops & bottoms? Happy Styling!

The Stylish Five: Day-Ready Dresses @Forever21 ($25 & Under)!

Spring is all about sandals, skirts, & dresses! I love this season’s dresses @Forever 21, not just for their very affordable price, but the styles as well!  I picked these five for a long-awaited post in The Stylish Five b/c I think they speak to so many different styles, considering the LBD, something animal print, the always lovely polka dots, a sweet floral, or an edgy tribal pattern.

I picked the silky self-tie back dress ($12.00) which is currently on sale & would look perfectly polished with some canvas wedges for day.  Also marked down is the leopard print dress ($16.99) & if paired with red ballet flats & a denim jacket, you’ll be ready for brunch with the girls or a day of shopping.  The sleeveless polka dot dress ($19.80) is just the thing for my plus-size Style Darlings, especially with a metallic belt & a pastel cardigan.  The summer floral dress ($15.96) is a classic & flirty option with bright accessories in yellow or coral.  Lastly, the Sunday brunch dress ($22.80) is a figure-flattering choice, available in 1X & 2X.

For more on the best dresses for spring, check out some previous posts including a new arrival @Old Navy, more bright shift dresses from Forever21, Rachel Zoe’s pre-fall collection @Neiman Marcus! Happy Styling!

3/23/12 Darling Of The Day: Elizabeth Banks Colorblocks In A.L.C.!

During a recent appearance on The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson, The Hunger Games actress Elizabeth Banks showed off one of this season’s biggest trends, which is colorblocking! She wore this beautiful royal blue & black A.L.C. Zenya dress ($893.00), which is available @Barneys. Of course this price tag is way out of budget, but we can appreciate the soft pleats & feminine deep-v. Elizabeth paired the dress with basic, but classic black round toe pumps, similar to those seen here, but you don’t have to have a stylist or a movie star to have access to this kind of style.

I searched high & low to find similar dresses at affordable prices, including the colorblock mod dress ($19.80) from Forever 21, Arctic Circle Black & Blue Dress ($51.00) from Lulu’s, & Honor Gold colorblock dress ($34.02) from ASOS. Lots of celebrities have been wearing colorblocking, but when you take these two colors & put them together, it creates a whole new regal, refined, & fashion forward look.

I haven’t posted in Darling of the Day in quite a while, but I’m always happy to share some of my favorite celebrity looks, which is also what I do for my other blog @Ladies Outfitters. Do you like the colorblocking trend? Which of these three less expensive suggestions is more your style? Happy Styling!

Quickie Darling Deal & Steal: Spring Into Style with Dresses from Forever 21!

I can feel it… spring’s a-comin’! What better way to welcome in the season than dress hunting? I visited one of my favorites stores, Forever 21, to see what was going on in terms of spring dresses & I found these three adorable dresses.

The soft orange, neutral, and yellow hues are perfect for ushering in the season, especially with dark denim skinny jeans, white cigarette pants, & a navy mini skirt.

I love the cascading shift dress ($24.80) in yellow / grey.  It’s lovely with a cardigan & wedges. The pleated bib dress ($24.80) in tomato can be made even softer with espadrilles and multi-color beads, or toughened up with a cropped boyfriend blazer & peep toe ankle booties.  Lastly, the colorblock trim dress ($27.80) in tan / orange is work-ready if you add a patent leather belt, or just the thing for a weekend family party.

Do you like these dresses? Where do you shop when it comes to spring fashions? What colors are you looking to add to your wardrobe this coming spring season?

Also, while I have your attention, I’d like to offer up some good reads for those of you who like the Style Darling world.  Not only am I a part of the Ladies Outfitters, Movie Buzzers, & Culture Mob family, but I’d like to share with all of you some of my friend’s blogs. This includes Yoga Flow On The Go, How Do You Yoga, Delusions By Design, The Law According To Murphy, Cibo Chat, Etsy Brook, This Happy Place, & Couple of Crumbs.

Enjoy clicking around on those & I highly recommend following them! It’s hard out there for a blogger & we need all the support we can get! Happy Styling!

Quickie Darling Deal & Steal: Romantic Flats from Forever 21, Inspired By Fine Italian Designs!

I wanted to share some of my favorite images from my shopping adventures during my most recent trip to Italy.  I went on a tour to the beautiful city of Montepulciano (& visited the amazing Bindella winery), & during my afternoon stroll throughout the city, I found a cute little leather goods store which sold shoes, bags, belts, & other fine quality Italian merchandise.  Among such splendors of style, I took pictures of these flats.  I loved the jewel & feather details, as well as their feminine round toe and cap toe shapes.

I was shopping around on some of my favorite websites of American stores & naturally, I found myself visiting Forever 21.  Then, I came across these two pairs of flats, which brought my right back to that little shop in Montepulciano.  The faceted rhinestone flats in black ($17.80) & embellished rhinestone flats ($17.80) may not be made of real leather, but the price tag is very budget-friendly.

I’ve been wearing a lot of ballet flats recently since I suffered a minor ankle injury during my travels, so naturally I’ve been trying to make them work in the most flattering way possible for my wardrobe.  For more fashionable posts on flats, check out what I’ve found from Charlotte Russe, Nine West, & Topshop! Happy Styling!

Basics for a Bargain: Best Black Jackets For Day & Night (Dedicated to Laurie)!

During a recent breakfast date with my uber-stylish friend Laurie, the subject of blazers came up since she’s in search of a jacket with enough flair to dress up a going out look, but one that can also be worn for a daytime casual look.  Because a black blazer is such an essential item, I thought I’d turn to some of my favorite celebrities for some inspiration on the different styles of blazers for a number of different occasions.

First off, we have Olivia Palermo in a velvet Giambattista Valli mini dress with brogues from Zara & a Mango clutch.  She tops her look with a button-embellished jacket for a more polish at a Macy’s event.  Fergie attended an affair for Black Eyed Peas in a feathered & gold skirt with a satin-trim blazer & Christian Louboutins.  Rachel Weisz paired her velvet jacket with leather leggings at the DVD launch for Deep Blue Sea.  At the premiere of Sandra Bullock‘s latest film, Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close, the Oscar-winner donned an Alexander McQueen suit with a plunging jacket & corset-inspired belt.  Jessica Alba went out for a stroll in West Hollywood, pairing a single-button jacket with a high-neck white dress & black tights.  Lastly, Kristen Bell played down her cropped pink trousers with a Rachel Zoe tuxedo jacket & satin pointy toe pumps.

When looking for a blazer that works for you, there are a lot of factors to take into account like fit around the waist, where the sleeves fall, & details like trim & structure.  Since jackets are investment pieces, these bargains are a little higher in price, but totally worth it if you find one that works best for your shape.  I picked out a variety of jacket suggestions to be worn casually with shorts & tights, with your favorite dark denim jeans & a button-down top, over an LBD, or over a sequin cocktail dress.

The classic two-button blazer ($59.99) from Gap ranges in sizes 0 – 20 & has been marked down from its original $98.00 price tag.  There’s plenty of room here to add a fancy antique brooch if it looks too office-ready for a going out ook.  If you’re looking for something with some built-in personality, try the zebra stripe textured blazer ($32.80) from Forever 21.  A dressy option for a jacket comes from JC Penney, the MNG by Mango tuxedo jacket with satin trim ($60.00) is just enough to wear over a blouse or with a jersey dress & metallic belt.  If details like buttons are your thing, the H&M blazer ($59.95) is not just available in black, but also light pink & bright blue.  A classic single-button stretch jacket ($48.96) like the one from New York & Company adds confidence to a t-shirt & jeans look, especially with knee boots & hoop earrings.  Lastly, I remembered my recent post about Kmart’s Sofia by Sofia Vergara collection & the velvet tuxedo blazer ($31.99) came to mind, especially if worn with a slinky cami & skinny pants.

For more Basics for a Bargain looks, check out scarves inspired by Claire Danes & Rihanna, tees & leather like Miranda Kerr, & look-alike sweater dresses to those worn by Nicole Richie & Eva Mendes! How do you wear your favorite blazers? Where are your favorite places to shop for blazers? Happy Styling!

Luxury Look-Alikes For Less: Vacation-Ready Striped Dresses From Michael Kors & Calvin Klein Vs. Target & Forever 21!

Thanks to some online browsing of the latest styles in dresses for Spring 2012, I noticed a trend in black, white, & gray stripes for dresses. Even though the weather here on Long Island feels like early spring / late fall, these dresses are certainly vacation-friendly if you’re headed away for these supposedly cooler months.

To the far right, we have a MICHAEL Michael Kors striped dress ($150.00) from Bloomingdales & a Calvin Klein belted ponte knit sheath dress ($118.00) from Nordstrom.  I’m sure the quality of these dresses is very high, but so are the prices.  Perhaps finding the cute alternatives from Forever 21 & Target may ease some pressure on your wallet, while also upholding any money-saving resolutions that you hope to keep this year.  The double-breasted stripe dress ($19.80) & tank maxi dress ($10.00) can be dressed up & down, depending on where you’re headed.

With such a classic foundation as stripes, you can add some glam with chunky chain-linked necklaces, a patent leather belt, & some towering platform heels.  Also, for daytime, try a boyfriend blazer, oversized flyaway cardigan, or a touch of leather.

Inside A Style Blogger’s Closet: My New Year’s Eve Look At Half Price!

My New Year’s resolution is to post at least one blog everyday.  I think at some post during 2011, I convinced myself that I could do two a day, but sometimes life threw other obligations in my way & that didn’t happen.  However, let’s start the new year off on the right high-heeled foot.

I wanted to share my look that I posted about a few nights ago, including the foil print laser cut sheath dress ($35.00) that I bought at half price from Dress Barn on Friday- the day before New Year’s Eve.  Then, on Saturday, my bestie, Rosie, & I hit up the mall for some great end-of-the-season deals to find ourselves a nice sweater & belt to complete our looks for the two separate venues in which we were attending festivities.

My belt was from New York & Company, priced right for under $20.00. However, the belt is not available on the store’s website, but I had been seeking to find something with a basic patent leather face, perfect for cinching me in at my smallest point, especially since the dress was so fitted. Also, I wanted to find something that I could also wear to dress up a more casual item that I’d wear for work. The shawl collar cardigan ($17.80) in black was a great purchase from Forever 21, especially b/c Rosie was looking for a similar style for her dress.  Low & behold the only two on the rack were in our sizes.  We snatched those puppies up & headed to the cash register.

Also, the black opaque tights were a Dress Barn purchase & what I loved was the control top on them, which was just enough to flatten out what needed flattening.  Lastly, I gifted myself the satin bejeweled peep toe pumps some time ago from Forever 21.  I recently wore them to a friend’s wedding with this dress from White House Black Market, so I knew they were comfortable for a night out in celebration of the new year.

What did you wear when the ball dropped?  Are you heading out to the stores now to catch end-of-the-season deals?  Happy 2012 & Happy Styling!

12/24/11 Darling of the Day: Katie Holmes Struts Her Stuff In Nine West Boots & A Comfy Sweater in NYC!

I’ve been all about the big, chunky sweaters this season, especially since I’m crazy for my new boots & favorite leggings. There’s nothing more classic than a cream cable-knit sweater, like the one seen here, worn by Katie Holmes while taking a stroll in New York City.  The actress is also wearing leggings by The Girls, Nine West boots, & a red bag by Clare Vivier.

While this look would’ve been perfect for running around, getting all that holiday shopping done- we’re still in the very beginning of winter & it’s never too late for essential items like these to be added to your wardrobe.  I selected the ELLE pointelle cowl neck sweater ($34.80) from Kohl’s & Jessica London‘s turtleneck sweater ($34.99), which is available in sizes M-2x.

As for the leggings, I was so happy to find two pair that cost under $8.  This includes the Decree leggings ($7.99) from JC Penney, which also come in chocolate & gray, as well as the basic knit leggings ($6.50) from Forever 21‘s plus size line, Plus21.

When it come to the boots, I’m super jealous b/c I’ve wanted to find myself a good pair of gray knee boots this year, but since I’ve already bought the black ones (previously referenced), my budget won’t allow for another splurge.  However, the side ruffle suede platform boot ($19.95) from GOJane & Torrid‘s ‘Sally’ knee-high suede boots ($68.50) in wide-width are the best way to recreate the look!

Also, the last finishing touches on the look help bring this classic outfit into the spotlight, with square sunglasses ($5.80) & buckled leatehrette handbag ($24.80) in red, both from Forever 21.

Would you wear this look?  Would you change it up? Where are you shopping for boots & chunky sweaters?  Happy Styling!

The Stylish Five: Last-Minute Stocking Stuffers ($15 & Under)!

I managed to make my way to the local mall last night, just to assist the bestie in finding some secret Santa gifts.  I was not surprised at the amount of shoppers still remaining walking about, frantically in search to complete their gift list.  Or maybe I’m wrong & they’re all shopping for themselves?  Anyway, sometimes there’s more to life than building a quality, but affordable wardrobe, so I wanted to take a quick minute to feature some really cute stocking stuffer gifts for the last-minute Style Darling to consider.

Some of my favorite stores for accessories like Charlotte Russe & Forever 21 have affordable gift selections, which makes shopping all the more easier! If you have a friend who’s always listening to music on their iPod, or some other device with headphones, then maybe consider jazzing up their setup with a heart headphone splitter ($9.50), which is adorable adorned with pink rhinestones.  Also, to keep with the sparkly theme, I know I’m always looking for a new bobby pins & the multicolor bobby pin set ($4.50) which has 60-pins in total is just the way to go when I’m looking to tie my bangs back & coordinate it with my outfit too!

Also, for a Style Darling on a budget, I know I’m always keeping track of my coins.  I like to collect them every so often until I can’t zip my wallet closed & then deposit the loose change into my savings.  There’s another $20 or so set aside that I didn’t even know I had.  So… the sparkling piggy bank ($14.80) in pink may be just the thing for me to see how long I can go to fill it up before I make that deposit.  Perhaps, if that’s too much pink for the Style Darling in your life, there’s also one available in clear rhinestones!  This makes an especially fun gift since trying to save more money each year is among the most popular of resolutions.

As a writer, I would absolutely love the filigree pen holder ($4.80), which makes for a stylish addition to any desk.  It’s also great for storing little beauty necessities like bobby pins, cosmetic brushed, or to decorative with a votive inside.  Maybe if you use it to hold pens, it can serve your 2012 resolution of taking the time to put together hand-written notes, a dying art since Facebook, text messaging, & Skype are just a click away these days.

What better way to look forward to 2012, especially the fabulous & upcoming spring styles than with a leopard print umbrella ($6.50).  When you can’t quite make an animal print work in your outfit, here’s an easy solution to finding a way to show off your wild side.  Plus it’s super tiny & can fit in most tote bags to carry with you when inclement weather may or may not be on its way!

Where do you shop for last-minute gift items?  Is there something on here that I missed?  Would you find any of these picks useful for yourself? Happy Styling!

12/21/11 Darling of the Day: Blake Lively Hits The Streets of Boston in Diesel!

To help celebrate my 100th Darling of the Day post, I was searching high & low for a look that would suit most Style Darling & then this super chic image of Blake Lively came to me! The Gossip Girl star was out & about in Boston recently wearing a motorcycle jacket, lace-up boots, A Theodora & Callum scarf, Diesel jeans, & toted around an elegant Givenchy bag.

I’ve selected pieces for both women’s & plus sizes b/c style knows no shape- it knows all of them!  First off, the building blocks to pulling off this look include an essential baseball tee ($14.99) in black from Merona, available @Target, the (minus the) leather military bomber jacket ($82.80) from Express, & the Kut from the Kloth ‘Jennifer’ skinny jeans ($44.99) from Macy’s.  Both the jacket & jeans are reduced from their respective original prices of $138.00 & $79.00.

For my extra-curvy Style Darlings, I’ve picked out some equally-edgy plus size items that will take your wardrobe from girl-next-door to rocker-chic!  First off, head over to Forever 21 & check out their Plus21 department, which is where you’ll find the solid raglan top ($15.80) in black & fab skinny jeans ($13.50).  Also, @Jessica London, you can find the zip-trim leather jacket ($75.00) in black, but it’s also available in bold colors like amethyst, raspberry, blue, & coral in sizes 12-28.

The finishing touches on this look are easy to find, affordable to purchase, & most of all perfect for transforming a number of looks all season long.  The safari fringed printed scarf ($8.50) in grey / black is from Forever 21 & also comes in jade & blue options. The imitation leather messenger bag ($24.95) from H&M is perfect for carrying your iPod, Kindle, & some extra necessities when you’re on-the-go like Blake.  Lastly, the boots bring it all together!  The Fergalicious ‘Kerin’ boots ($17.49) are currently marked 75% off @6PM! Happy Styling!

If you’re looking for the best New Year’s Eve accessory as you’re making plans for a fabulous party, check out these two clutches, which vary in price by a wide margin!  Of course, there’s a certain je-ne-sais-quoi about the luxe design of a clutch by accessories-designer-to-the-stars, Judith Leiber, especially when it comes to this fizzy studded envelope clutch ($1595.00) from Neiman Marcus.  However, since we’re Style Darling son a budget, you can carry on the same embellished feel with the glamour pearl clutch bag ($14.80) from Forever 21, while saving yourself lots of money.  What’s so great about both of these bags is that they’re flashy enough for a girl’s night out, a more formal event, or for cocktail hour.  Remember: Style Darlings should always get the most out of their wardrobe & accessories, so let’s make that our resolution for 2012!  Happy Styling!
