Watch This Style: Female Empowerment In Music Videos Never Looked So Good (& Stylish)!

While trying to catch up with the latest music burning up iTunes, I’m guilty of surfing around YouTube to see what some of my favorite & the most talked about recording artists are up to these days, especially since it’s been a while since I posted music videos on Style Darling. One thing has been made clear: Female empowerment is a strong message in so many of the most current pop & rap hits, from well-established artists, to the most controversial ones, & to the up & comers who are certainly making headlines of their own.

Meghan Trainor, Iggy Azalea & Rita Ora, Katy Perry, Taylor Swift, & Nicki Minaj.

Of course, I need to talk about style here too, so here goes. First & foremost, I am obsessed with newcomer Meghan Trainor & her positive body image-themed booty shaker “All About That Bass,” which I’ve shared with so many friends in the last two days. Then, my favorite Aussie Iggy Azalea teamed up with Brit singer Rita Ora for a Kill Bill homage in the music video for “Black Widow,” where the duo look sleek battling against the likes of villain Michael Madsen. Katy Perry‘s party pop song “This Is How We Do” takes fans on a modern art museum tour, making references to pop art, as well as the more geometric side of artists like Mondrian (at the same time celebrating the carefree party lifestyle in a rainbow of wig choices & latex outfits). Taylor Swift‘s uber-pop debut single off her upcoming 1989 album, “Shake It Off” shows the former country crooner as a quirky dancer sporting a tutu, cheerleader uniform, daisy dukes & mega hoops, a letterman jacket & pleather skinnies, as well as an all-black Audrey Hepburn-inspired ensemble. Lastly, the most buzzworthy of them all is Nicki Minaj‘s ” Baby Got Back” reboot, “Anaconda,” which glorifies a healthy rear end in the most explicit & aggressive ways possible, but I say that if she’s got it (which she totally does!), she should flaunt it.

Which music video is repeating on your flat screen? Which artist’s message most applies to you? Who do you think went too far? Watch This Style: Pepsi’s New Ad Campaign Captures Beyoncé’s Career Highlights In ‘Mirrors!’

Beyonce for Pepsi

Beyoncé really needs no introduction. She’s stylish, talented, & an awesome role model for women everywhere. Her latest effort is a new ad campaign for Pepsi with the short video “Mirrors,” which puts a hip-shaking Bey up against her career highlights in a mirror’s reflection. A troubled Beyoncé is practicing her famous moves in front of mirrors, when a sip of an ice-cold can of Pepsi suddenly revives the diva within.

More specifically, we get to see the Texas-native reunite with her Sasha Fierce alter ego in her “Bootylicious” hot pink costume during her Destiny’s Child days, as well as her tank & shorts look for “Crazy in Love,” & the always fabulous hand armor-baring “Single Ladies” leotard. Also, there are flashes of Beyoncé from past videos including, “Naughty Girl,” “Beautiful Liar,” “Baby Boy,” & “Love On Top.” The theme of the video is: “Embrace your past, but live for now,” which is a phrase I’ve been experiencing all too well these days.

Super Bowl Halftime Show

Beyoncé put on an… electrifying performance, to say the least, at last night’s Super Bowl halftime show, with surprise guests, her former Destiny’s Child bandmates Kelly Rowland & Michelle Williams. I had a feeling that something spectacular was going to happen & now we can relive all the leather-clad glamour in the video below. Beyoncé’s costume included an outfit by Rubin Singer & booties by Proenza Schouler.

Beyoncé

Beyoncé Knowles had a pretty spectacular year last year, but it seems that 2013 is shaping up to be an even bigger year for the star. Not only is she the featured halftime show for this year’s Super Bowl, she’s been named the sexiest woman of the century by GQ, is the face of Vogue‘s March 2013 issue, has recently announced a Destiny’s Child reunion, & will be sharing a very personal documentary with HBO called, Life Is But A Dream. I’m excited to share the trailer with readers, which is set to premiere on February 16th.

Watch This Style: The Top 5 Most Stylish Destiny’s Child Music Videos!

Destiny's Child

One of the exciting stories from the headlines this week is that 2000’s R&B group, Destiny’s Child, is reuniting for a new single & greatest hits compilation. Even when reading the details behind the long-awaited return of the soulful trio, “Say My Name” started looping in my head.  The group had so many great songs & hits, but it was always their coordinated chic on-stage & red carpet looks that made me wanna watch their every move. Beyoncé Knowles, Kelly Rowland, & Michelle Williams were a force to be reckoned with, thanks to their stylist, Beyoncé’s mom, Tina Knowles.

Not to mention that this is waaay back when “I don’t think you’re ready / for this jelly,” was the phrase before “All the single ladies! All the single ladies!” Anyway, my top 5 most stylish picks of their music videos includes (in no particular order) “Bills, Bills, Bills,” “Say My Name,” “Bootylicious,” “Independent Women Part One,” & “Lose My Breath.” Of course, there’s plenty more style to see in “Jumpin’ Jumpin’,” ” “Cater 2 U,” “Survivor,” “Emotion,” “Soldier,” & “Girl” too.

Which are your favorite videos? Are you excited to see the trio reunite after so many years? For more fashionable music videos, check out posts featuring Beyoncé, Gwen Stefani, Jennifer Lopez, Madonna, Katy Perry, Christina Aguilera, Mariah Carey, & Alicia Keys! Happy Styling!
