Fabulous In 4 Ways: A Metallic Faux Leather Pencil Skirt For The Ages From New York & Company!

I was so excited in August to share one of my newest categories, Fabulous in 4 Ways, especially since the debut post was dedicated to my good friend Laurie, as inspired by her fabulous lace-up knee boots from Victoria’s Secret!  Now, I’m talking about faux leather & pencil skirts, but before we dive into the outfits, I turned to some of my favorite celebrities to get some inspiration in how I would style such a classy & modern take on the figure flattering piece.

Kate Bosworth rocks a Proenza Schouler leather-trimmed pencil skirt at the brand’s New York boutique opening with a relaxed white blouse & strappy sandals.  The First Lady, Michelle Obama, wore a high-waist pencil skirt in navy with a cropped cardigan & purple top, while visiting a Wisconsin school.  Mad Men bombshell Christina Hendricks mixes her old school glamour with a Dolce & Gabbana blouse, red clutch, & classic black pencil skirt.

Total Recall star Kate Beckinsale plays with colorblocking with a chic H&M tank, Diane von Furstenberg turquoise skirt, & spiked neutral pumps.  Rashida Jones is polished & professional with a touch of menswear while making an appearance on Good Morning America, wearing a printed button down shirt & white pencil skirt.  Aussie starlet Cate Blanchett showed her support for Givenchy in a head-to-toe look with Roger Vivier heels.

Also, at Fashion Week for the upcoming Spring-Summer 2013 runway collections, the pencil silhouette was everywhere, as seen in Runway Rundown posts, including Dolce & Gabbana, Burberry Prorsum, Christopher Kane, & Oscar de la Renta.  Also, these pieces were shared by more fabulous designers like Nina Ricci, Tadashi Shoji, & Salvatore Ferragamo!

To recreate a pencil skirt look, I’ve selected the faux leather bronze pencil skirt ($59.95) in metallic bronze from New York & Company, which challenged me to find a way to wear this for work, day, date, & cocktail occasions.  If you want to get the most out of your wardrobe for the office, check out the zippered contrast sweater ($24.80) in black from Forever 21 with the short tab sleeves top ($24.80) in teal available @Windsor Store.  The colorblocking & relaxed details tone down the metallic texture of the skirt, especially when paired with Express‘ diamond texture body shaping full tights ($22.90) & suede cap toe chunky heels ($21.50) in black from GOjane.

The look to the right (above) is fun for a day with the girls or feeling like mixing it up because of the contrasting details in Lord & Taylor‘s CK JEANS cable-front cotton cardigan ($29.99) in black over the tab-sleeve plaid-chiffon shirts ($29.94) in black combo from Old Navy.  Of course affordable pieces like these can be reworked with skinny jeans or leggings & chunky accessories.  @Payless, I’ve found the Dexflex Maye strappy boot ($59.99) in black & Minicci micro fiber tights ($6.99) in burgundy to add some extra dimension while playing with trends this fall.

Depending on where you’re headed for a date, this kind of pencil skirt is perfect for an elegant & upscale look, without breaking the bank.  I’ve chosen pieces with luxe details to put this look together, including the Jennifer Lopez pleated mesh overlay tank ($19.80) in tuffet from Kohl’s & glitter lace almond tow pump ($38.50) in champagne from Charlotte Russe.  To complete the ladylike feel, I’ve added the round stone drop earrings ($13.60) @Cache & The Limited‘s zip around wallet ($29.90).

Don’t forget that pencil skirts are perfect for building a sexy cocktail look. Of course, a dress will save you lots of time, but to get the most out of your wardrobe, why not play with separates in unexpected ways with the snake-print tiered bustier ($88.00) in amethyst from White House Black Market, paired with the Emma WP platform pump ($39.99) from Bakers Shoes.  Also, I love Forever 21‘s looped drop earrings ($7.80), which look red carpet ready, especially with the Mossimo basket weave print clutch ($16.99) in black & white @Target.

How would you wear this pencil skirt? Are you following the metallics trend? What are your favorite work, day, date, & cocktail looks? Happy Styling!

The Stylish Five: The Limited’s Sleek Summer Sale ($15 & Under)!

Welcome to part 3 of my daily posts in The Stylish Five! Today’s assessment includes sale items & final sale items from The Limited! I’ve actually been thinking about hitting up my local store since they were generous enough to send me some discount coupons for my upcoming 2?th birthday! What I love most about this store is that their timeless pieces really work for any stylish woman of any age.  Classic pieces like these are what builds a memorable wardrobe & they’re almost always the most flattering separates to own too!

First the Drew Hollywood cargo pant ($12.99) in black are perfect to capture the preppy look while the first half of September is still summer.  Take in those cool summer nights wearing these with your favorite sandals, a tank, & cardigan.  Not to mention the tilted pocket pencil skirt ($12.99) in khaki is office-friendly without looking too stiff.  The neutral hue will brighten up tops in fuchsia, red, lime, & cobalt, whether you’re headed to a meeting or happy hour.

As for tops, the striped scoop neck tee ($12.99) is a necessary basic, especially if you’re looking to try & mix things up, like with a floral bubble skirt or sequin mini.  You can even wear this under a denim jacket for an all-American look with red jeans! The Limited’s Collins skirt ($12.99) in pink was a big splash this season.  Talk about making menswear even more feminine, without looking over-the-top frilly.  The loose fit is sexy, yet appropriate with your best power suit or over a denim skirt & some drop earrings for lunch with the girls.

Last, but not least, take some time to consider this time of year as an opportunity to freshen up your accessories like jewelry with the latest markdowns, including the multistrand drape bracelet ($14.99). The different hues will bring out warm tones in a printed sheath dress, while also working for a variety of special occasions.

Super Style Wishlist: It’s All About The Knees This Fall @Barneys New York!

I remember on an episode of Gossip Girl, Leighton Meester’s character, Blair Waldorf, said something about loving Barneys New York, & why wouldn’t she? Of course here, you can score big on designers like Proenza Schouler, Helmut Lang, & Bottega Veneta.  Be warned that you’ll also be spending big on these fabulous high-end designer creations.  However, I love turning to luxury stores like this one to find out what’s going on for next season & all eyes are on the knees… knee-length skirts that is.  Whether you love pencil skirts, a-lines, peplum skirts, or bubbles, there’s something available @Barneys for everyone.  However, while searching through their collection of skirts, I’ve found these four which have my head spinning.

I’d love to style the Prabal Gurung lace pencil skirt ($895.00) with a feminine blouse, sequined tank, or crisp white button-down skirt. As for the Lanvin tipped pencil skirt ($549.00, marked down from the original $2,215.00 price), I love the black & white mod design of it & its side slit, but this can be matched with a belted red cardigan or sleeveless silk top & some beads. The Balenciaga pencil skirt ($1,495.00) is a leather dream come true, sure to emphasize your curves, especially when paired with masculine pieces like something in argyle or a bold-shouldered blazer.  Because there’s no such thing as too much lace, I also found this Lanvin lace pencil skirt ($2,210.00), which is a perfectly feminine pick for any Style Darling who likes bows, flowers, or beadwork details to make a look all the more ladylike!

Which skirts are your favorite? How would you style these? What kinds of shoes do you think look best with a knee-length or pencil skirt? Be sure to check out previous Super Style Wishlist posts, including the best Hamptons-ready dresses @Neiman Marcus, Prada’s newest fall runway shoes, & Miu Miu’s glittery ankle boots! Happy Styling!

Luxury Look-Alikes For Less: Featuring Fierce & Affordable Leopard Skirts!

I’m a very big fan of animal prints (when worn sparingly), although my print of choice is always almost zebra for its classic black & white color combo. It’s seemingly coy, yet still perfect for accessorizing with radiant reds, blooming blues, or a natural neutral! It’s been a while since I went out the hunt for some Luxury Look-Alikes For Less, so I was clicking through my emails & found a sale going on @BCBG Max Azria. I wanted to check out these supposed sale items & while I love the designs of glittery skirts, flattering trousers, & lacy tops, these were still beyond my budget.  This Simone leopard jacquard skirt ($168.00) is probably worth every penny & will last a very long time for virtually any season. When it comes to a print like this, especially on a skirt, the shoe possibilities are nearly endless when you consider a classic round toe pump, a daring embossed pointed toe stiletto, zip-up knee boots, or gladiator platforms.

In a fury of fashion & frugality (go with me on this) I clicked around on Forever 21‘s website only to rejoice in finding the leopard knee length skirt ($12.80), which is perfect to pair with a crisp button-down shirt, silky cami, simple tee, or sequined tank.  For my Style Darlings who wear plus sizes, the Jessica London pencil skirt ($69.99), is available in sizes 12 – 28.  Although the prices have quite the range for my lovely look-alikes, I can’t emphasize enough how flattering & versatile this piece is.  A pencil skirt lasts & you can reinvent it with over & over again with some layered beads, a cropped cardigan, or metallic belt.  Happy Styling!

Magazine Must-Haves: Adorable & Affordable Picks From People Style Watch’s August Issue!

Maybe I jumped the gun in creating this post, but one lonely Saturday night has brought me to do some in-depth blogging.  I received the latest issue of People Style Watch (August 2012) with the always gorgeous & funny Sofia Vergara on the cover.  I’ve searched high & low for an image of the cover, but cannot find it.  Of course, the magazine never uses actual photo shoots so finding the image shouldn’t be a problem. Anyway, my post tonight is more about what’s inside the mag…

I love this mag b/c it always makes me feel that even though I’m a budget shopper & don’t have access to brands like Givenchy, Yves Saint Laurent, or Dior, I can still dress like I look like a celebrity.  Here are some of my favorite pics from the issue that can be mixed & match with tons of wardrobe staples for this season & many more to come!

The faux patent platform pumps ($23.80) from GOjane are perfect for getting your red carpet look together- not to mention super sexy for pairing with any cocktail dress or a first date look.  If you’re looking to channel your inner Egyptian goddess, then head over to Mimi Boutique for the Abba gold jeweled collar necklace ($27.80).  Also, for some snake-inspiration, the two-tone hinge bracelet ($11.50) from GOjane offers a solution to any questions you may have about wearing both gold & silver.  Speaking of color, the colored jean trend isn’t going away, which is why I was excited to find these skinny jeans ($44.50) in lavender from American Eagle Outfitters, represented in the magazine with a shot of Jessica Alba wearing them!

For some more pop, Jennifer Lopez‘s collection for Kohl’s is bursting with color, especially this pleated poncho top ($22.00) in coral, which is currently on sale from its original $44.00 price. If you’re looking for a classic jacket, then check out the Route 66 medium wash denim jacket ($13.49) from KMart, which originally retails for $26.99.  This is the best way to keep cool-looking when worn with a linen skirt & some espadrille sandals.

Who doesn’t love a pencil skirt? The Worthington seamed pencil skirt ($22.00) from JC Penney is available in sizes up to 24W in a variety of colors to help show off your shape & personality.  One of my favorite stores is Forever 21, which has these cropped trousers ($22.80) that can help usher your summer pieces into fall, like a short-sleeved cardigan or sleeveless ruffled blouse, for a little menswear twist.  Lastly, I’m always up for the latest when it comes to accessories, which is why I’m so happy to also feature the pastry case pink and grey envelope clutch ($37.00) from Lulu’s.  This exact clutch is not featured in the magazine, but its colorful counterpart is.  This similar style is super trendy with its colorblocking & deco elements.

Christmas Day Sales: New York & Company Celebrates With Up To 80% Off Everything!

I’ve been forcing myself not to visit the old stomping grounds- this time last year I was a seasonal employee of New York & Company & definitely indulged in my fair share of style purchases.  Since I’ve been so good, I figured I’d take the time now to see what’s going on with their Christmas day sale & was happy to see that EVERYTHING is up to 80% off!

What’s even better is that the store often does not accept coupons for big storewide sale items, but this is not the case today.  So break out those coupons you’ve been hiding & check out the crystal stones, chains, & faux pearls pin ($9.97) to add to your favorite blazer or even to attach to a scarf around a handbag.  Pencil skirts like the lace trimmed pencil skirt ($34.96) are universally flattering & if gray isn’t your color, the skirt is also available in black with black lace & white with black lace.

The bright stripes flyaway sweater ($27.96) is classic to wear over a mock turtleneck, or can even be saved for over a spring dress in a bold color.  To add a softer pop of color to your wardrobe, try the colorblock tunic top ($27.96) in admirable rose.  The luxurious fabric & pretty hue will make any look with dark denim skinny jeans or with black cigarette pants more regal.  I’m a big fan of dresses from New York & Company & couldn’t take my eyes off of the striped shirt dress with grosgrain belt ($39.86) in blue flannel.  The stripe design & belt create an hourglass figure & would make a great option for an upcoming New Year’s Eve party. Happy Holidays & Happy Styling!

Black Friday Sale Update: LOFT’s 50% Off Everything Sale Until Noon!

If you’re reading this at the time of posting, you have less than 11 hours to get some amazing 50% off of everything deals @LOFT stores only!  After noon, the sale changes to 40% off, which is what the online store is currently offering, so if you’re looking to give your fall / winter wardrobe a quick makeover, LOFT is the place to do it!

My favorites are the merino wool pleated v-neck sweater dress ($59.99) in fresh olive & ruffle front dress ($59.99) in black & white. Both dresses leave room for adding a belt or jacket to change up the proportions, as well as looking great with textured or opague tights for any occasion.

Of course, I’m all over the skirts, which I love to wear for a dinner with friends or for a day of work.  The pleat front crepe skirt ($69.99) in flame red is the perfect pop of color for a neutral blouse or the best way to get the most out of your shape with a mutli-color sweater.  The layered grids print pencil skirt ($49.99) punches up a button down shirt & is figure flattering when meeting the boyfriend’s parents this season! Happy Styling!

Quickie Darling Deal & Steal: Get Ruffled With a Blouse from ASOS!

I always like to wear a top that can be mixed & matched with any type of bottom, or layered with a vast array of separates.  I especially love blouses that can be worn for work, daytime, or going out.  Hence, my choosing the true decadence ruffle top ($35.94, originally $70.08) in navy from ASOS. It’s also available in cream, but both colors are essentials for any season!

I wanted to share this sweet find, which is perfect to wear when you’re at the office with the seamless scoop neck cami ($24.90) underneath from The Limited.  Or, go sexy for nighttime & wear a cute solid-colored bra, but pair the blouse with the hammered satin blazer ($39.99)  from Charlotte Russe for a little extra pop of shine.

I realize that there’s a whole lot of ruffles going on here, but they can easily be tucked into a pair of pleated cuff shorts ($39.99) on sale @Express with textured tights & boots, or with the yarn-dyed pencil skirt ($49.99) from @White House Black Market & cardigan for a more professional look.

For an effortless casual day, take the essential nylon leggings ($5.50), which are available in eight different colors @Forever 21.  Break out a chunky knit or flyaway cardigan with hoop earrings to complete the look while you’re running errands this fall!

How would you wear this blouse? What are your go-to separates for building an outfit? For more looks from ASOS, check out The $100 Challenge / Darling of the Day featuring Lea Michele & Color Me Style featuring Eva Longoria, both wearing ASOS frocks.  Happy Styling!

Quickie Darling Deal & Steal: Tulle / Velvet Skirt from WHBM!

Of course a pencil skirt is a go-to piece for any wardrobe.  It can be worn to the office, to a party, on a date, or just for a sharp look about town during the day.  BUT I do love me a skirt with some volume.  Perhaps it’s the inner Blair Waldorf.  This tulle / velvet skirt is definitely ballet-inspired, but its uber-glamorous shape & movement scream for some fabulous shoes

At White House Black Market, one of the chicest retailers around, this item has been marked down from $120.00 all the way down to $29.98!  This style of skirt is timeless.  You can pay homage to Carolina Herrera & break out a crisp & clean white button-down, or try an applique cardigan with textured tights.  Need some more styling suggestions?  Check out these items & Happy Styling!

Quickie Darling Deal & Steal: A Sequined Cardy!

While the latest issues of Marie Claire, Vogue, & Elle are riddled with what’s hot for spring, I look outside to see gray skies & snowflakes falling, which will certainly continue on for at least another month. I’m torn between wearing my cute suede flats or the new faux fur-lined boots that I bought for my recent trip to Italy. But chunky boots it is, just to safely exit my house for the daily task of heading to the office. I’m definitely not thinking about a lightweight floral dress, a charmeuse cami, or pastel belts. I do love the idea that sandals are supposedly just around the corner, because this means that warmer weather is on the horizon- at some point at least.

On the days when I’m snowed in, shoveling out the driveway in my suburban neighborhood where streets are unplowed, I’m consoled to know that I can save some money by not trekking halfway across town to check out the latest sale items at H&M. However, the sometimes deadly thrill of the hunt inspires me to click, click, click away to see what’s going on at some of my favorite retail websites. Before I take a look at any of the new & regular priced merchandise, I always hit the sale section & here is an item that just can’t be missed!

Perhaps when you’re not into wearing a structured jacket, a sequined cardigan will do the trick to finish off your look. This is simply a must for any pencil skirt or patterned trouser, making your look ready for happy hour, yet still subtle enough for the daytime. A simple pair of studded earrings or pair of dark denim jeans turns casual into chic with just a cardigan.

This Beach Sand Heather cardigan was $69.00 & is now $59.99 at Ann Taylor LOFT, but you can get an extra 50% off taken at checkout, plus FREE SHIPPING on all purchases $125 or more- no code needed.  It comes out to about $30 for the one item, which is a great deal on something that can you can wear any time of the year! This cardigan is also available in Dark Grey Melange

If you sign up for their free emails, you can get notifications for all the best sales & discount codes on items every week!  This comes in super handy for birthdays & the holidays at the end of the year!

**NOTE: The selected links are additional suggestions & not items that I actually own, although I would very much like to! Happy Styling!
